Zenith
« on: October 12, 2013, 04:02:43 PM »
Hi, I was looking at a pre-owned Zenith today and it looked really good. However, I don't really know much about the brand and it seems not much is spoken about it here too.

Would there be any Zenith owners that can share their experiences with these timepieces?

There are many Zenith owners here e.g.  dcpillai, terrenceterrence, Enkidu, etc
Just use the search button.
Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

I heard my name was mentioned... hahaha
Yeah I am a huge fan of their watches.

Zenith is well known for their El Primero Chronograph movement.
Launched in the year 1969 (movement is called caliber 3019PHC then), it is one of the most robust chronograph money can buy.
Tested in real world conditions for over 40 years... and no known issues of chronic problems.
Widely accepted as one of the best chronograph movements ever made.
Accurate as hell due to the high beat (36k vph)

For their non chronograph, they have the elite movement... base movement is the time only elite caliber 680.
This base movement is used to add on many complications like power reserve, moonphase and such.
Same goes with the el primero, it is used as a base for many other complications like moonphase, triple date, annual calendar and so on.

With reliable base movements, I am sure they are reliable as well.
The Annual calendar Captain Winsor still is the cheapest annual calendar with and in house chronograph movement you can buy.

Currently, their collections cater to almost every category.

They have watches ranging from 38mm to 45.5mm...

Dressy (Captain Collection)
Sporty (Pilot and Stratos)
Historical (El Primero Collection)
High Horology (Academy Collection)

Do check em out and see which one you like.
Narrow it down to a few pieces and ask again.
Answers might be more specific.
Happy hunting.

Hi Hanz, thank you so much for your reply. I happen to come across a pre-owned Zenith Class Elite Dual Time today and was quite taken with the design of the watch. However, I withheld my purchase as I did not know anything about the movement or history of this brand. I have only heard of it and seen it at stores but never took a second look at them.

Do you happen to have any reviews or thoughts on this model?

Zenith Class elite dual time.
That would be the older model in the lineup.
I am not sure they are still selling it BNIB at ADs...
Grey dealers have them at pretty good prices.

Now the dual times are presented in the Captain and Pilot lines.

Surprised that no one has yet mentioned that zenith used to supply movements for the Rolex Daytona, and for certain Panerai chronos.

For Panerai, it is not limited to chrono models only. :)

I thought instead of playing the connections card to Rolex Daytona, I would like to introduce the El Primero based on it's merit.  ;D

Zenith is doing great under the current management led by Dufour.  They are reconnecting with their roots and churning out some really great watches.

Yeah I see what you mean, the El Primero can more than stand for itself.

I think the connection is really important, too, as it underscores the company's design and quality. I'm sure it swung a fair amount of people towards Zenith.

I was looking for the Queen of love from Zenith's website, but it is no longer listed there. Does anybody know, is it already a discontinued model?

Yes it has been discontinued.
You can check out the newer ladies line.
Similar look is now released under the Zenith Star Open line of collection.
I like the cushion case more.

Is this the first time a brand comes out with three sizes for the same model?

not exactly...

because they are not the same model -- the Type 20 Aeronef uses a pocket watch marine chronometer movement. The GMT edition is the one in middle. The right most uses the elite time only movement.

I was initially interested in the 40mm aeronef...
It's been branded as a ladies model though... lol
But I am still excited and hope to see them "in the flesh" next month...

Breaking news. The Stratos Striking 10th just won the 'Sports' category in the recently concluded GPHG award ceremony.  Zenith.

In fact, AP is more guilty of coming out with 3 sizes for their Royal Oak at 41mm, 39mm and 37mm that is essentially the same model with the same movement.
