Omega, IWC, Zenith or UN ???????
« on: January 30, 2013, 10:33:47 AM »
Dear Watch lovers,

After some research and homework that I have done I decided that my choice must be an automatic golden case watch with in-house movement.
If I am not wrong, all the watches below are according to my requirements:

I would like to hear your opinion about the next issues:

Can you rank those watches as per their movements quality / level / reliability ???
How about ranking the brands ? Which are more or less prestigious ?
Which from them per your opinion will still be valuable and an precious present to son or grandson after 20-40 years ???
Which of those you think are the best value for it's price ?

I think I am very close to the decision and after your comments I will be able to finalize my decision and buy one when I am in USA next week.

Thanks for your help and support in advance, I really appreciate that and did learn a lot already from you. Cheers !!!

Not to put a damper on your enthusiasm but I am quiet sure that 3 out of 4 are not in-house movement.

the future is the future, what if you only have daughters / grand-daughters? and have a son-in-law you cant bear to see? :D
but back in the present, you should go with what you feel comfortable wearing.

anyway, amongst those watches, the zenith looks the best.

referring to those specific models u highlighted
Omega is an ETA with co-axial enhancement
IWC portofino also ETA ebauche enhanced by IWC
UN -not sure if its ETA or Sellita/Soprod but not inhouse

only Zenith's elite is in-house but this model is not with the 36,000 vph El Primero Zenith is famous for.

I would go for the Zenith Captain Winsor if I were you. Full in-house movement with an annual calendar complication. Damn good value for money. However...I am not a fan of gold watches.  :)

There is a Rose Gold De Ville Hour Vision with the 8501 movement.

I have some experience with the Omegas (both 2500 and 85**) series. They are pretty good and very accurate. For a dress watch like the De Ville, Omega adds a lot of enhancements and polish to the movement that you can see through the display caseback. This is the back of my Omega PO Skyfall, I find the extra work put into the movement pretty attractive.

So my vote is for the Omega De Ville (2500 movement or the more expensive 8501 hour vision). The other watches are pretty fine too (especially the Zenith and IWC).

I thought all the El Primero 36000vph movements made in-house?

Why buy in the States? Depending on where you are going, American sales tax is ridiculous.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_taxes_in_the_United_States
And you can't claim the tax back even if you are a tourist unlike the EU and Singapore.

Unless you are shopping at a direct factory outlet mall or deep discount store (kind of rare to find luxury brands in these places) or you are getting a good deal from a friend/relative, it's going to be a lot more expensive there, rather than here or in Singapore.

Zenith has 2 movements
Elite & El Primero 36,000 vph
Zenith is famous for El Primero as Elite is a normal 28,800 vph movt.
However El Primero was designed in 1969
Zenith is able to price their in house movt watches very reasonably because they have not had to invest in new tooling and jigs as the movt has not been changed since 1969
Both are in house
