Would anyone give a shot on new automatic Swiss Made watch?
« on: February 09, 2017, 02:01:11 PM »
I'm asking because I pledged a new brand called LIV watch on kickstarter recently.
Its not really cheap cheap per se (price range around RM 3000 after conversion) for a new brand but I will give it a shot since with similar specs you will be priced more expensive with other big brands.

I'm always wondering why Rolex and others are so expensive; craftsmanship and technologies are not the excuse to sell a watch at over RM100k because car technologies and craftsmanship would be more expensive. So I think the margins go to marketing and middlemans.

Who know this brand will become Tag XXXXX like someday :)?

Im all for innovation. Great to see startups within the watch sphere. This appeals to a new generation of watch loving folks and as they start to explore horology some graduate to better understand complexities in watch making.

Your question with regards to other brands being overpriced, all i can say is, one cannot put price to heritage, pedigree.

Put all the craftsmanship, heritage, technology aside. For given the price of rolex as it is now, there are still people lining up on the waiting list, if anything I think rolex is underpriced. Just simple demand and supply.

I think some of those people you have mentioned is to wear and show off that type. LOL

They buy just for the sake of buying luxurious watch. No offence.

I do agree that Rolex could be expensive for what it is but I could also easily say that Liv watches are extremely expensive for what it is too. Putting aside the fact that a Rolex is far far superior in every department compared to a Liv watch, a Rolex will also retain its value whilst you will probably struggle to sell your Liv watch for even half its asking price if you decide to flip it.  I guess Liv should not be even mentioned with the same breath as a Rolex or even Tag Heuer.  These brands have built a reputation and a tradition that is beyond a start-up.  IMHO, the Liv design is way too funky and you will grow tired of it eventually. So, to answer your question, it is a definite No for me. I would rather spend RM3k or less on a Seiko Diver (turtle, samurai, etc) or if you prefer Swiss, something from the Longines Heritage line.  Buy it only if you really love the design but don't have grand allusions that it will someday be a Tag Heuer or you bought a Rolex on the cheap.

sorry but the whole Chrono range are battery powered Quartz watches.... not exactly in the same league as other fine swiss watches... tag, omega and certainly not Rolex.
The design is not groundbreaking on most of them and seem to be bits of many other watch designs in their models, along with having no heritage to the name and they are not exactly a boutique brand i cannot see them lasting too long

Ya, I do agree with most of your opinion. My point is dont be afraid to try out new brand. Just like 7friday, back then Rolex is just a new brand as well anyway right? Cheers!

All the chrono watches on the site state
Quote
Movement: RONDA startech Caliber 5040.D
which is a battery powered quartz movement.

i cannot see any info on the square watch on the main page... maybe its an auto?

There has been a few brands like U-Boat that started out with quartz chrono's then worked their way up to using automatic movements, unfortunately the reputation was already tarnished by "battery powered watches" and throwing a generic ETA in them didnt help either.
They put their prices up near some of the expensive boutique brands and never managed to last. And the differeence is they actually had some heritage to a design of a Uboat waych from the 40's from memory.

At the end of the day you buy what you like and what sings to you no matter what anyone else says but as a comparison goes there is none..... yet

I am all for trying something new if the company offers something exciting and innovative. Unfortunately, IMHO, Liv does not offer anything interesting other than a funky design that might appeal to some people's taste.

It's highly unlikely to ever reach Rolex pedigree status, you have to remember Rolex was already a leader in developing movements and the oyster case back in the day. They were really tough watches back then that served a purpose. LIV watches on the other hand is just about design? Nothing wrong with micro brands (I also bought a kickstarter watch which i wear often) but they can never ever compare to the powerhouses like Rolex, omega, longines, jaeger...etc. not even in 50 years...
