Seiko Tuna Family
« on: March 09, 2014, 08:34:44 AM »
Was just curious, and browsing this forum. Seems like there isn't any dedicated discussion on the iconic Seiko Tuna family. Can all those who own tunas post their pics and experiences here. I believe there are many tuna owners out there.. :)

I have not had the privilege of owning a Seiko Tuna but would love to acquire one in the near future.

Fans of Seiko Tuna should not miss the wonderful review posted by JOS2012: http://www.malaysiawatchforum.com/index.php/topic,10492.msg94672.html#msg94672

What's the shroud for on the tunas ?

The shroud is to protect the bezel from unintentional turning due to knocks or other factors. This is a great function as the bezel is very important to divers especially when they are diving with air supply.

went to the AD today, saw the baby tuna. not sure if i seen it wrongly, because it has a see through caseback which is rarely seen on a diver's watch.
really beautiful watch indeed with a very good price. would be on my wrist real soon, i hope! ;D

Been looking around WUS for some used pieces but not very often they come up. And when they do, it gets sold rather soon.
Depreciation of these TUNAs are very small too.

From what I gather, SBBN017 is the lowest priced TUNA (Hardlex crystal, Stainless Steel bezel, 300M). Then comes SBBN015 (Dual Hardlex, black bezel, 300M). And SBBN013 (Crystal, black bezel, 600M).

I don't think my info is correct, please advise if they are wrong. There are also many more variants and LE in the market.

But what I want to know is, are the TUNAs sold in Japan cheaper than Malaysia/Singapore/USA/etc.??? Maybe an Airasia trip to land of the rising sun to get a TUNA, no?

Danny,
The experts on tuna is either ivanswk or meoramri…. so they should respond...

The only tuna that attracted me and I subsequently got was the SBDB008.
My review on that tuna is on the thread already kindly attached by yourself...
Don't think I should waste bandwidth by repeating the thread or pics here when a simple click on the attached thread would do..

The granddaddy of tunas, “Golden Tuna” 7549-7000 600m quartz diver is another fantastic looker but being quartz is a no go for me.

Hi Toolkit, too many L.E. Tunas to mention every single one...  The main ones you need to know, in approximate chronological order, are asa follows:

6159, 600 m WR - First Tuna, late 60s, with hi-beat auto movement.

7549, 600 m  - First quartz Tuna.  'Golden Tuna'.

7549, 1000 m - Golden Tuna.  Same watch as 600 m 7549 but Seiko increased the water resistance testing to 1,000 m, so could increases rated depth.

7549, 300 m - Quartz Tuna.  No gold bits.

7C43, 1000 m - Golden Tuna.  Seiko introduces current family of high torque dive watch specific quartz movements.  Best dive watch movements in the world IMO.

7C43, 200 m.  Quartz, no gold.  Not sure why depth rating was lowered.  Most likely just a change in WR testing.

7C46, 1000 m.  Darth Tuna.  Current movement, mostly black ceramic.  Movement upgrade (longer PR I think, 5 years).

7C46, 300 m.  Quartz, no gold, back to 300 m.

SBDX005, 600 m - LE reissue of original 6159 (1000 made), but with 8L35 auto inside.

SBDX011 - Auto 'Emperor' Tuna.  Not golden, more like Darth.

7C43, 1000 m.  Golden Tuna.  Limited re-issue in Taiwanese market.

SBDB008, SBDB009, 1000 m - Spring drive Tunas.  LE and standard model.

The main points to understand are that most Tunas are quartz, with a 200 / 300 m family and a 600 / 1000 m family.  Fewer autos, although they have become standard models since maybe 2008 or so (Emperor Tuna).  The SD Tuna was released last year as LE, now released as a standard model.  Hope this info is useful.

FYI, the Baby Tuna does not have a see through caseback. Its a ISO rated 200m diver. Mine has the standard caseback found on all Seiko divers.

I do notice this point, thus I was really confused as the worker told me it is the baby tuna.  ??? ???

edit : the crown is at 4 o'clock too, its also not a Seiko 5. Looks a little like the monster too. Not sure if its a monster or a baby tuna.

If I'm not mistaken, it has the exact printing on the dial as the baby tuna. 200m WR and Automatic.

If possible, take a pic of it. I might be able to identify it for you.

Here's a link to the review of real Baby Tuna I did few years ago.

And the model number for Baby Tuna is SRP 227K1

Here's my blue baby tuna:

Its size and fit is a peculiar one. Some days I wake up, strap it on, and honestly do not like how it looks. Maybe there's just too much blue. Perhaps a quick strap change can fix things. Other days, I slap it on and it really feel quite 'normal' to me. But there are some details that I really like; sunburst dial, gold hands...
