One, and the only one.
« on: September 05, 2013, 12:24:42 PM »
Going to year end, it's time for me to pick a long waited sexy piece. Fortunately / Unfortunately, my Financial Controller urges me to make only One watch for my entire life companion until beyond repair. :HammerHead:
Though it sounds ridiculous, with my due respect i believe it is time for me to deeply consider this matter.

It could sound lot silly to majority, but i wish to have a poll for this.
If you were only pick one model on your wrist, which it could be?

For me.

Rolex GMT, though i'm really in love with GS :(

Only one watch? Then it must be Patek. Any Calatrava will be a great choice, or Nautilus if your life involve a lot of outdoor. Besides, not only it will be your entire life companion, it will also be a great heirloom piece and last your children life-time as well.

However, the "evil thought" part of me want you to buy vintage. Not just any vintage, but truly significant one, like Rolex Milsub, JLC Polaris, Vulcain Cricket, Heuer Monaco & El-Primero. These watches are classy and respectful, and since their rate of failure is much higher, and your regulation did mention the watch can be replaced if it is beyond repair.

buy a cool looking watch that always need to repair, build a case that the accumulated cost of repair is more expensive than buying another watch, sell the old watch, and buy a new 1, then you can have more than 1 watches in your life, though each at a time.

So, buy Panerai with in-house movement.....

Yes, Rolex GMT if its one and only...all the needed and practical complications are there.  Yes, not exclusive as the Pateks but since youre talking about one and only, i think a Rolex sport model will be more appropriate.  I doubt your wife knows the cost of service (and repair) of those super brands....if she does, i dont think some of your choices would have been approved...

Depends on your age and needs. I think if the FC insists it's only one watch unless beyond repair, go on a hunger strike until she changes her mind.

First and foremost, thanks a lot for all the comments left.  :)
Pertaining to the cost of repair, that isn't a real story to her knowledge, and so do i too.
For her, the underlying principle is of my dilemma in choosing a watch with limited budget.
Of course, i ain't earning pretty much though, with only few years of accumulation of year end small penny to achieve 'a' target, which is always my weak spot especially surfing the post 'what is in your wrist today'.

In fact ima early 30's who is 'working' hard in a mid size co.
Currently owning Ball divers and Tissot GP chronograph, and that's all.
My budget is only 25k max. Thus gonna utilise it wisely.

Thanks for all the opinions :)
Love you guys. ;)

With a budget of RM25k, I would look at watches from JLC.  A reverso for an iconic piece or their master series for something more dressy. The new master calendar is a beautiful piece and the master memovox is extremely cool with the alarm function. You might also want to consider Zenith and their legendary El Primero range/movement. Try to buy from a true manufacture as you only have one chance to get it right...and of course...buy something that you like...but what you like now may not be something that you will like in the future...so choose properly.    ;)

Now you'd stated the budget, I suppose I'll have to review my recommendation too. You'd already had a diver, and a sport watch. You need a proper, evergreen dress watch. I think your best choice is a Rolex Datejust.

However, as my "evil thought" part would like you to buy a vintage Patek Calatrava. They are barely within reach if you look hard enough, or be brave and buy through eBay.
