News for fans of A. Lange & Sohne: Limited-edition treasures
« on: November 25, 2012, 07:29:40 PM »
As stated in the press release below, A. Lange & Sohne timepieces have been successfully sold at premium prices in recent auctions.
It is more evidence that the exclusivity and exquisite Teutonic engineering and craftsmanship that goes into each Lange timepiece is increasingly being appreciated by the serious collectors of fine timepieces with deep pockets.

Any Lange fans out there care to share their view of this brand?

A ALS is on my wish list as much as on most other WIS wish list but as I'm moving away from office formal watches towards casual sporty models, I'll have to admire from afar.

On top of that, top drawer brands usually encase their movements in precious metals to partly justify the astronomical prices for their pieces as there is a limit on how much you can charge for the movement development/manufacture. As such I tend to shy away from precious metal watches as they are very difficult to unload unless it a PP or Rolex. Otherwise you have to sell it close to SS pre-owned prices. Or you need to buy a pre-owned ALS and let the 1st owner bear the depreciation.

For most of us mere salary earning mortals, not sons of some fat rich political figures who spend RM millions shopping overseas, we have to maximise our value for our hard earned money, not money dropping from the trees

I love Lange. I doubt there's any big group brand as consistent, exquisite and better workmanship than ALS.

I own a Cabaret RG and it's a watch that choose its owner as much as the owner choose it. At first I thought the price is crazy. Even after discount it's still high (although it sell lower than the new AP 15200). The justification I made is that it's a Lange. Lame excuse I admit.

When I gone thru day to day of wearing the watch I notice subtle details about watch. I found that the case is curve, there are lots of edge shape but nicely bevel. The proportion is perfect and the dial is pure class.

On the movement side, the winding is ultra smooth. I never experience any other manual movement like this. Better yet it use s shaped movement to match the rectangular case. That is dedication. The bridge and main plate are all german silver or Maillechort in french. This provide a slight hint of yellow hue to the plate. However there a practical reason for using this alloy. If you use a lope to check the glashutte wave or geneva stripes on the movement you can hardly better finish on the market unless you go independent like Dufour, Voutilanen or DeBethune. The price we pay for those we can easily get few more Lange.

Like I said it's a watch that choose its owner as much as the owner choose it. One thing that you won't get from Lange is attention. You can wear a 300k Lange and people who aren't into horological art are going to ignore you. They will probably notice that gold rolex or steel PP than your platinum Datograph UP/DOWN. That's all fine by the Lange enthusiast. They are low key people by nature anyway.

Another thing about Lange is the second hand value always seem low which is puzzling since Lange annual production is about 10% of PP. I guess all that is changing. I hope ALS continue to do well.

Are you thinking of one, Danny?  ;)

Btw Tyler,
Whats does the basic entry level Lange go for currently ?
The closest I came to buying one was a Richard Lange which was abt RM 60K many many years back.

Joe, Tyler,
Thanks for sharing your views.

On top of that, top drawer brands usually encase their movements in precious metals to partly justify the astronomical prices for their pieces as there is a limit on how much you can charge for the movement development/manufacture.

I guess the best fine timepieces are invariably encased in previous metals because the high end customers demand these specifications.
It also makes it easier to justify the higher margins that normally accompany these luxury products.

Are you thinking of one, Danny?  ;)

I really admire the craftsmanship and engineering that goes into the Lange timepieces and aspire to have a Lange on my wrists one day.
However, as Joe put it so succinctly, I'm a mere salary earning mortal, so it'll take a while before my personal balance sheet is strong enough to carry such an valuable asset on my books.

Incidentally, I don't know how far its true.
Recently, I was admiring a FPJ worn by someone I know, a Malaysian cardiologist practising in UK who told me that most of his fellow medical specialists wear mostly either Lange and FPJ or have both....

ALS is always in wish n dream list for many...

Every look at it sure know it is much better finish than 90% of Swiss watches...

But when comes to that price tag. Then the brand history, re sale value comes into consideration...

That's the main reason it still sitting on wish n dream list of many...

I so fell in love with Richard Lange... Was thinking to sell some of my watches for this... But pulling hand brake after knowing the maintenance cost of ALS...

Besides that my attention also at
Glashutte original senator chronometer... It comes with very useful big date n power reserve for a hand wind watch...
Besides the love of the movement design n finishing... I believe the movement finishing is almost as good as ALS...
The dial design is just perfect!!!

Yes, especially the rose gold one!!!
I n lucky to molest this nearly 8-9 yrs ago...
The owner is a Fren of mine who led me to the dark side of watches...
10 yrs ago he shown me a daily beater... Namely panerai!!!
Since then The poison of watches was attached to my blood molecule...

Anyway, I still prefer Richard Lange n go senator chronometer movement....

hi Tyler,

It'd be nice if you could post up pics of the watch from several angles for us to appreciate..

I'm surprised that its lower priced compared to the AP 15200... it would be a no brainer for me to choose the ALS..

I own a Cabaret RG and it's a watch that choose its owner as much as the owner choose it. At first I thought the price is crazy. Even after discount it's still high (although it sell lower than the new AP 15200).

Tyler- I actually prefer the design of first Richard Lange with centre second...
Not the fusee n chain with small Second... No specific reason ... Just the design of the overall case n dial looks more balance to my taste... And like the way the movement is designed n finished...

Same reason for the Senator chronometer...

Myself for the Richard Lange i feel is too "common" for me.
Although i never seen one in real life.

I love the unique non centered dial.
Something out of the norm.

Man when the time comes (If it ever) i will have hard time to choose between Lange or Patek.

I don't have live photo of the Richard Lange Pour le Merite. I wish I do .

However I must correct myself that the price I mention is for the new 15202 not the old 15200, discounted of course. Sorry for the confusion.

I am comparing to the simple RG Richard Lange not the Pour le Merite. AFAIK the after discount price of these 2 watch are similar. Of course it still cost more tham conventional Myvi ...

My apologies....I wasn't clear in my message.. :-[
I meant that since you have a ALS Cabaret RG, perhaps you could post up pics taken at various angles of it to let us appreciate it....

Any Lange priced lower than an AP 15202 is still very good value..taking into account all the factors in buying a high end watch..

Call me a philistine and revoke my WIS card, but there is a limit on how much I can afford in a watch. When a watch starts to cost as much as a Honda Civic (my first car), I'll take the car.

I think these kinda luxury watches should not be purchased by people who have to make the choice of whether to buy the watch or the car. If it has to come to that, i agree with you 100%.  i would hope eveyrone would choose the car. Luxury watches for me should be purchased as a appreciation of the skill and craftsmanship and also as a badge of honour on your hand to show your status. Certainly should not let urself be in debt to own a luxury watch or sacrifice necessities to own a luxury watch.

But to put it in your context, the proper question for people who can afford luxury watches, should be:

What if you have 15 honda civics in your garage and someone offered you a watch that cost the same? Would u take the watch or the 16th car?

(please keep in mind i'm talking about luxury watches, i feel peopel can be wtach enthusist without buying luxury watches as well, very broad range of beautiful brands everywhere with all diff prices)

Got you. Will do next time I bring it into my current rotation.

Getting back on topic, I'm also very interested to see your watch. I'm starting to appreciate some of the timepiece under this brand, really beautiful. I was also very impressed that they have a personalization service! How interesting would that be for a gift for the wife.
