Questions on PAM112
« on: December 29, 2011, 03:17:21 PM »
I have a question in regards to the PAM112. As far as I know, the PAM112 is a sandwich dial. Is this so for the newer models only? Tried to google the answer but came up empty. I came across a Panerai that looks like the PAM112 but has a sausage dial. It is from the B series. To me it looks like a PAM002 but i could be wrong. Is the PAM112B a sausage dial?

PAM00112 started life as the PAM00002. The PAM00002 had the painted dial (sausage dial) and was produced between 1998 to 2001 (A to D series). The PAM00112 with the sandwich dial 'replaced' the PAM00002 in 2002 and is still being produced until today (E to current, N series). Other differences are the case back, with the PAM00002 having the solid case back and PAM00112 with the display back and the movement, OPI for the PAM00002 and the OPX for the PAM00112.

However it is important to note that PAM00112 produced between 2002 and 2004 (E to G series) had the painted or sausage dial and different movement decorations. From 2005 (H series) onwards, the dial was changed to the sandwich dial and different movement decorations and if not mistaken, the swan neck regulator.

There are some minor changes being introduced from PAM00112 M onwards.

I see. But without the swan neck, won't accuracy of the movement be compromised? I am tempted by the PAM002 but have no idea on the collectability of the piece. This proves temptation is everywhere.

Nope. One looks better, both (RG and Swan neck) the same function. For ease, the normal regulator is easier to adjust as the screw on the swan neck is at the side. Some say that the Swan neck provides a finer degree of regulation.

As for collectability, the PAM00002 is pretty collectable, as are all base models. More so if it comes with the T dial. However there a couple of PAM00002 sitting on the shelves here in Taiwan not moving. Perhaps it is the price, perhaps the uncertain economy in the coming year, perhaps people are waiting for what will be released in SIHH 2012 or even the fact that there a number of models to choose from, PAM00000, PAM00005, PAM00390, PAM00372 and the list goes on and on. Who knows. I do know prices are a tad soft at the moment, and it is not just Panerai.
