Can share me the experience?
« on: June 30, 2024, 06:58:21 PM »
Hi.

Do watch dealers sell fake watches? Can this also happen with dealers that have physical stores? How to prevent this?

Thank you.

The short answer is yes, you must be careful and not let your guard down.

Sadly yes, need to be on your toes when dealing with watches. Read and read the reviews on the shop. If its a current model of a watch, get a feel of it an a local authorised dealer. Play around with the watch. Wound it up see how the movement feels. Then go to the watch dealer that you browsed and play with the watch again. See if anything is off. Alternatively i think some watch shop are able to do an authenticate for a fee.

Nowadays, fakes are so good even "experts" would be fooled until the caseback is removed and only a real expert can tell the difference.

I think the best yardstick is to know how long that particular seller has been in business. There would be a reputation to maintain.

Word of the wise - Buy the Seller, not just the Watch...

Grey dealers that mushroom around - can sometimes be fooled themselves with a combination of inexperience + speedy deals and sadly for some - greed.

Warranty cards can themselves be forged. Original Boxes and Manuals can be bought from the secondary market.

So if you spot anything amiss - or if the deal is too good to be true - then I would personally walk away.
