GMT hand settings
« on: August 26, 2017, 09:58:09 PM »
Dear all,

I am just wondering how most of you set the GMT hand on your GMT time pieces.

1. Set to home local time
2. Set to GMT(utc) time
3. Set to 2nd wife's time zone

Or is there any other time zone and why?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

1. Let normal hour / minute hands as local time.

2. If gmt bezel is turnable, just turn the bezel to the GMT hand to point to the right second timezone time.

Or

2. If GMT bezel is not turnable (eg. Rolex Explorer II), will adjust the GMT hand to point to the right second timezone time.

If hour hand can be adjusted manually, GMT hand will be local hour. If GMT hand can be adjusted, hour hand be the local time.

Then 2 hands showing the same time? Or Do u mean when travel then adjust hour hand to local time so u can read local time with hour hand and , home time with GMT hand?

This is just my opinion and how I set my GMT watches. Any opinion or comments are very much welcomed.

First of all, just to state clear of my understanding of some words.

Local time - The time where the time piece/myself is located at. Home or Travelling.

Home time - The time of my home clock. Where my family resides.

GMT time - Greenwich Mean Time. UTC - Coordinated Universal Time.

So let's talk about pieces without turning GMT bezel. There's 2 ways I can think of setting it.

The time zone traveler.
1. GMT hand to home time, and hour/minute hand to local time. In this case you will know your local time when travelling and always know your home time with the GMT hand.

The international business guy. AKA Mistress in another time zone.
2. GMT hand to the time zone of your frequent business dealings. Say you have a business in Dubai. So GMT hand to GMT+4. And hour/minute hand to home/local time. So u will always know 2 different time with your GMT piece.

If you are neither nor. Then I would think that you acquired the piece just for the aesthetics.

Then comes the rotatable GMT bezel. You may still set your time piece exactly same as the non rotatable bezel. But you lose the function of the rotating bezel.

This is how I set my GMT master 2.

I set the GMT hand to GMT+0 time zone. Then hour/minute hand to local time. No matter home or travelling.

Say I'm home in Malaysia and I want to know time in Dubai. Dubai is GMT+4, so I rotate the bezel until I have 4 at the 12 o'clock and I read the time from the GMT hand. Then, I want both hands showing home time then rotate bezel for MY/SG +8 at the 12 o'clock and I have both hand to home time.

If you set the GMT hand to home time, you  may say that u still can read Dubai time by -4 clicks from the rotating bezel. Sure, provided that you are at home and know the time difference between DXB and KUL. If you are travelling and positioned in DXB, and would like to know the time in NYC. Then u would need to know the time difference between KUL-DXB-NYC. So -4-9, and you rotate the bezel minus 13 clicks. That is if you don't miss count. Which is a pain in the neck.

Here is the advantage of GMT hand to GMT time (UTC). You will only need to know the time zone reference. E.g. Tokyo is GMT+9, London is GMT+0 , New York is GMT-5 and so on. So to know the time in NYC, wherever you are in the world, set -5 which is 24-5=19 at the 12 o'clock and u read LAX time from the GMT hand.

I skipped DST explanation to not complicate things. I'm not the best at explaining things so I hope my post make sense to you.

I attached a photo showing hour/minute hand showing local/home Malaysia time. Bezel rotated to show NYC time. KUL 4:34pm and NYC 03:34 am.

Thank you for reading this long post.
