Something I Didn't Know About Rolex

Someone in this forum, http://www.sg-roc.com/showthread.php?t=11853&page=9, mentioned that and I quote

Even Rolex SA do not & has never claim in-house horlogerie manufacturer.
The links or bracelets for Rolex are made by ARTeLinks.
Hands & dials for Rolex are outsourced to ArTeCad.
Steel case for Rolex watches are made by SWATCH group
Rolex movements are made by Valjoux's secret assembly division that's protected under Swiss law & it's ebouche are loosely implemented by Dubuis Depraz.
Diamonds for Rolex are cut and polished by

FYI, ARTeLinks, ArTeCad, Valjoux & Dubuis Depraz are owned by SWATCH and shared by LVMH, Richemont & many others in a secret deal chaired by Swiss govt since 1997.

I always thought that Rolex was like 90% in-house watch. How many of you share the same thought as I am? :) Looks like Rolex also uses "ETA" ebauche after all ... a more secretive Valjoux ebauche hahahha

I believe that Rolex is as close to a true manufacture as you can get. They even have their own foundry (and how many other watch companies can make similar claims?). Check out the following articles from reliable industry sources and judge for yourself:

i also read recently rolex refused extend its current contract to all its supplier due to economy crisis....
so i can say some of their parts still supply by others....

true manufacturer? seiko..... maybe

Personally, i don't really bother if all parts are in-house or outsource..I'm more concern on the QA and the finishing..

i would rather they spend more time QA / finishing the watch to the best they can rather then do everything themselves if they are not capable at that given point of time...

Of course, if the company able to do everything themselves and still producing a good quality watches then it will be a plus...Like Grand Seiko :) (I think all parts produce by Seiko right?)...

Should have Danny to show you'll his Grand Seikoss..the finishing is top-notch!!

I agreed with Scott. I am not too concern if all or some of the parts are made by a single company. What I look for is quality of the mechanism i.e. accuracy and the finishing both inside and outside. It is just that, I just always have the thought that Rolex made their most of their parts in house.

Seiko GS watches are ~100% in house with some of the parts are outsourced to its sister company. That how I understood it.

Looks like Scott has let the cat out of the bag. I managed to get a couple of GS from Singapore at a reasonable discount, albeit at a much higher price compared to Japanese domestic market (no thanks to Thong Sia's fat markup!).

Will be glad to bring the pair along to the next GTG. My advice to those interested in GS is to purchase from Japan where retail prices are at least 20~30% lower and discounts are still widely available.

Hi Guys,

Cant resist the talk on Grand Seiko, I love them too but its quite a bit the price tag On buying, 2 years ago I looked at a few in Bangkok, Thailand they were much much cheaper than the ones in Moments Sunway Pyramid, it was like RM11,000 for the basic I doubt the price had increased much. here its like RM20K!! I ll go check it out again in Bangkok soon...

When I was at the Moments - Sunway... the other day. I did ask the sales person to take out those Grand Seiko for my 'feeling'. Well to describe it.. they superb... well made and detail. Average prices takes RM26k. I like the one that's look like the datejust and jubilee bracelet. Not too sure of their resale value. You know, people like me thats like to flip watches.

What say you?

Hi Q,
The basic mechanical GS should be competitive with the Rolex Oyster Perpetuals. The prices at Moments are horrendously marked up.
I wouldn't buy the GS there at those prices. Anyway did they offer any discounts?

Hi David,
I would advise against buying GS for flipping because the brand recognition is simply not there. Just look at some of the higher priced mechanical Seikos like the Landmaster and Marinemaster that City Chain brought in many years ago. You can still see those watches rotting away on the display shelves at KLCC. Just my 2 cents.

No discount offer by Moment for their GS..the model i'm keen selling at 32K which I think the actual Retail price is around 16K max...

Ya, the Marine Master is selling at MYR9995 in KLCC City Chain...25% discount but the bezel has a hair already..after discount is around 7.5K...but the quality of this Seiko MM is real good..

IMHO, I will not suggest to buy a GS and thinking to flip it later..maybe a Rolex better ;)
