Title: Basic Watch Maintenance Tip Sharing
Post by: Yoda on May 17, 2013, 02:54:36 PM
Hello members and guest

Just like to start this thread about the basic watch maintenance for the benefit of everyone wearing watch.

My recommendation:-

If the bezel does not turn or hard to turn, what I did is spray some WD40. It will work. But cautious check if your watch is still water resistant.

Please share your knowledge about basic watch maintenance if you have any for the benefit of everyone.

Cheers

i'll chip in~

if u went for a swim with ur watch.. in the sea or pool..
dont forget to rinse it with tap water and dry it up with clean cloth..

as sea water is salty and not got for your watch.. and maybe pool water consider ok but some pool water have a lot of chlorine that might damage ur watch in the long run...

u also need to rinse ur watch after u wore them for outdoor or sports activities.. as our sweat not only can stain the watch it also can be damaging in the long run..

just my 2cent~

tc cheers enjoy~ ^^Y

I'll rinse or wipe with damp cloth my watch after everytime wearing them all day. Sweat contain salt that could do some wear to watch casing and bracelet. Also keep your watch away from any electronic device to avoid electromagnet field. Change the drained quartz watch battery as fast as possible before it leak and damage the movement.

   hope this helpful..!

I just shower/bath with the watch on, brush it a bit with my toothbrush and hang it to dry after that.

I have the same experience.  I use the soft toothbrush to clean the watch, previously I use the old brush which may be hard and cause the scratch.

In adition i use the sponge too so not to expose to any scratches.

To add on, just remember, if you were to change the strap you may have to take out the spring bar. In many occasion the spring bar will stuck in the hole. Again WD 40 is very handy.

I have tried pulling out the spring bar using plier. The end result to the springbar is like bitten by a shark effect as the springbar stuck and have to pull hard from its position in the strap and the plier cause the scratch.

Hope more will share

Hello members and guest

If the bezel does not turn or hard to turn, what I did is spray some WD40. It will work. But cautious check if your watch is still water resistant.

My experience is that WD40 must be used sparingly and with extreme care. At one time, I was convinced WD40 was god sent when it came to stiff bezels. Until I sprayed some onto one vintage seiko 6306 diver and later found that the low viscosity WD40 liquid had seeped into the case and heavily stained the entire movement. Both the rubber gasket under the bezel and under the caseback had turned mouldy and sticky.

When it comes to sticky bezel, I prefer to remove the bezel, clean the dirt under the bezel with a toothbrush. Spray some WD40 onto a soft cloth and wipe the part of the case with which the bezel comes into contact. I prefer not to spray directly onto the watch (unless the movement has been removed from the case).

Another experience is that WD40 may discolour the bezel insert of vintage pieces because it contains petroleum distilates. So, think twice before you spray.. ;D

Hope the above are of some help.

Wd40?

I won't use this, because most ppl won't recommend to be used on superbike motorcycle chains as the chain got the oring or xring. In the long run, it will damage the chain ring which is made of rubber.

So I believe the crown also got rubber gasket so be carefull. Even guitar player won't use wd40 as it contains some water in it? So it will rust guitar parts.

Just what I understand.

WD40 has petroleum distillates in it. Definitely will have some reaction with rubber.

wd40? not a good idea  :) if my bezel stuck. I just dip my watch into soapy water and rinse, then it will be ok. If its doesn't work, there must be something wrong with your bezel, time to bring your watch to watch shop. They know better. Better to spent a few RM rather than broke your thousand RM watches!

cheers.

WD40 I will still take the risk as no many choice, but the application wille once in a blue moon.

What about maintenance of dress watch ( i.e non diver watch ) any contribution?

avoid using any tissue or toilet paper to wipe your watch, I got my baby a few hairlines after I used the same paper towel to wipe hand to wipe my watch after washing.  >:(

I have used alcohol to wipe the leather especially suade type, I find it alright

Rationale acohol is acceptable to our skin thus I believe its also able to clean the leather without causing damage,

Wood content in tissue  / toilet paper will scratch highly polished metal surface and lens.

Now that should be one point to consider everytime you buy a toilet roll.. :o

Go with water instead.
