It has been said many times, not least in this forum, that the appreciation of fine timepieces goes beyond its primary function of telling time. But primary function it remains and I have always been curious about how accurate is my stash of timekeepers.
So, in a week dominated by much thumb twiddling, I thought of doing exactly that and would like to share with you the outcome.
Firstly, the test perimeters were :-
1. 24 hour test period.
2. Reference time is SIRIM time
3. 10 hours or so on wrist with the remaining in a static watch winder.
4. All watches are mechanical automatics save for a hand wound.
5. The most complications in a watch is two, moon phase plus an annual calendar
6. Three of the watches are chronographs.
The results in descending order of accuracy are :-
a) Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Phase de Lune Tonneau : Minus 11 seconds
b) Omega Speedmaster Date (OMG-SPDMTR008 / 3513.30) : Minus 9 seconds
c) Schaumburg Regulatuer :Minus 6 seconds
d) Ball Conductor Transcendent Series : Minus 4 seconds
e) Tag Heur Carrera Automatic Chronograph : Minus 4 seconds
f) Rolex Datejust (178274) : Minus 2 seconds
g) Rolex Submariner Date (116613LN) : Minus 1 second *
h) Graham Chronofighter Fortress : Plus 1 second *
* equal being both one second off.
Quite difficult to find any absolute conclusion on any factor directly affecting accuracy. What I can deduce are as follows :-
1. All the pieces run slower per day (except for 1).
2. More expensive watches are more accurate (except for the ML. And the Choronofighter was equal to the higher priced ones).
3. Newer watches are more accurate (except for 2).
4. The most complicated watch was the least accurate.
5. No conclusion that Chronographs are more or less accurate that non-chronographs.
These conclusions I guess are affected somewhat by the smallish number of test subjects. It would be interesting to learn of the conclusions of other MWF members with more sizeable collection.
p.s. – not sure if this post should belong here or in the “Links and Resources” segment. Please do move the post as required.
Mucho Gracias.

That's an interesting test and findings. Thanks for sharing. :)

I know...I know...I know ....that I have OCD. Mine is the kind that I must do everything three times.
It' s a nightmare when I walk into something........ :Laughing_on_floor:

Wish i had the time and patience to do this.

Respect...respect....respect.... ;D So you'll use a chronograph to time each of the 3 sessions and then divide by 3 to get the average. How many decimal points do you use?

3 decimal

I somehow feel that you are all making fun of my OCD......it was a very significant moment in my life....I remember it so distinctly..it was Sunday, 21st March 1999, 4 minutes and 23 seconds past 4 O'Clock.....Out of everyone in my family, including my four uncles, my parents, my four grandparents, my seven cousins, my six Aunts, my four dogs, my six goldfish, my three great grandparents and my brother,I'm the only one with OCD...

Please specify...], my parents, my four grandparents, my seven cousins [Enkidu: maternal or paternal? how many times removed? Must be specific, please...], my six Aunts [Enkidu: maternal or paternal?] , my four dogs [Enkidu: male or female? Don't feel that bad. OCD people are actually the pillars of human civilisation. Without people with OCD, planes will not fly safely and submarines will not dive safely. No moon landing and the need to have speedmasters; NASA astronauts will be wearing watches without minute markers and instead of the moon they would have landed on some pacific islands...in many pieces.

Bro (or sis?), how did you do your test?
Did you do that manually (ie. comparing time with SIRIM via visual inspection) or was there some tools that you used?
I recently come across an IPhone apps that was designed to test the watch accuracy but the results was not consistent thus far.

seriously how about throwing in a cheap Swatch and see how it fair :)

a swatch i got with the old eta-2842 is running at +18s / day...so yea - pointless.
my 2 most accurate watches are basically at opposite ends of the price spectrum...a steinhart with eta-2824 elaborated, and an omega SMPc...both running at +2s / day.

Old swatch most probably doesn't lubricate well. And the problem with swatch is you can't service it as you can't "open" the watch.
i was told the newer one actually has better accuracy. Swatch has these auto chrono (ETA C01.211). For RM1k, it's pretty interesting to see how it performs :)

Bro....just visually checked. Yeah...I read about the Iphone app. Had not used it......I am more of an Android guy....

I used to be anal about accuracy but then realised what is a coupla minutes off?So much so I bought a timegrapher which measures the accracy in an instant. Now collecting dust ::)
However, the TG is useful in buying used watches and on the spot,if the seller's watch is like 1-2 min off/day,then that spells trouble

Interesting. Mind to share how much (roughly) did you pay for the timegrapher?

Circa 1 k

Who, or where do you calibrate the timegrapher that measures your watch movement? Without a proper calibration, can you accept the timegrapher readings?
