Hi,
My name is Stanley from Klang. Would like to get myself a Rolex watch by this year. I believe somebody might have ask this question before.
To buy Rolex, disregard the travel factor as I am going to HK and Singapore quite often for works. Swiss i may go June for holiday purpose. So, which place sell best price for this lovely piece? If the prices different is not much i as well buy in Msia.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

I heard that Taipei is a good place for watch shopping too...

In Singapore, as a tourist if you buy from an authorized dealer - you can claim back GST on top of whatever discount the dealer can give you. This is an automatic 5.5% to 6% cash refund at the airport. Just remember to ask for the GST claims receipt/form. In SGP, the list price for the watches is quoted with GST included. This is interesting as the list price in Malaysia is also the same as the list price in SGP. Basically, this means that Singapore has a 5.5% to 6% price advantage over Malaysia.
This is significant as I find that the the only two Rolex ADs in Penang (don't know about KL) will not discount - for a walk in customer like me anyways. Sifus with connection may have more luck. With several dozen Rolex sales outlets in Singapore, you have some leeway to bargain a bit. This also applies to Panerais.
So to my experience, Singapore beats Malaysia if you are a tourist shopping for (new) watches.

Just to add to the singapore issue, my experience in buying Rolex in singapore (just two months ago) was that after the discount given by the singaporen AD the price is normally quite competitive to Malaysia's AD price, although not necessarily lower. It all depends on the exchange rate. When i went there it was 2.51 so in my scenario it was slightly more expensive. However, Add on top of that you get back some GST from the government in the airport (make sure you fly there and don't drive there as you can only claim GST if you fly). After the GST claim it was slightly cheaper.
Then you have to also consider bank charges, credit card charges and the exchange rate the bank use. All in all if i had bought the Rolex in Malaysia i would have saved RM500 after all calculations done. If you specifically flew in to Singapore to buy the watch then offcourse you should include that charge in. For singapore purchases the exchange rate is king for your decision. If you buy at a low exchange rate, lets say 2.4, it would make a world of difference (offcourse dependent also on how expensive is your watch).

What about watch prices in London? I heard it is cheaper than in SG? Anyone has any experience?

Hi, Stanley.
I'm Lee here ( Rollee ). Do you still need any informations about where to get a Rolex ? I'd share with you IF you need it. Cheers

With the current weak Ringgit exchange rate to almost any other currency, buying locally is going to be cheaper.

Hi Stanley,
I am no expert but i have been to Swiss, Singapore and London recently. I have looked at Rolex watches when i was there. My conclusion is to buy in Malaysia, its the cheapest for now...

Japan. Tokyo in particular. You can find good bargain for Rolex watch.
-
China, you can find great discount rolex watches.
-
I heard Indonesia also has better prices compared to Malaysia, for a second hand market at least. Eventhough I'm Indonesian, I haven't checked out the actual places yet back home; Just word of mouth.

I dunno but china would be the last country I would buy a preowned from.

Yes I totally agreed with you. But lately they have increase the prices as a result of their wekening currency. So the price now could be competitive with Malaysia.

China is probably one of the most expensive country to buy a watch as the luxury tax is sky high...unless you are talking about the Lolex or Bolex variety.
-
If the price different is not that great between these countries, why buy it closest to home?
I believe in fostering a longer term relationship with your dealer. It helps when in need of after sales service and getting future latest information. Any dealer would put preference to their own customers first when it comes to priority. Depending on various opinion, this may be a greater value compared to the money saved...

Ideally I suggest doing your homework first, go to Chrono24 to work out a rough estimate of the value of the piece you plan to get. This will give you an idea of what the piece is worth. Once you done that go to the store and haggle! if they give you a price and you don't like it go to other store and try to get a better deal. Normally you will save few thousand dollars by doing this.

China will be the last place that I would look for luxury imported goods. If prices for China was so good, Hong Kong will not be flooded with Chinese shopping like crazy.
All that aside, the only other place that is cheaper than HK that I have seen so far, is at the duty free shop at the airport in Osaka. I know someone in HK who sells watches and got a pretty decent discount, but they might not necessarily have all the models available. So for me, I would say, buy in Hong Kong. But not off the regular AD's

I prucharsed watches in hkg and swiss, gst refund around 9% for hkg and 6.5% for swiss if I remember correctly. I think swiss will have the attractive prices provided u travel to those non-tourist places as those watch dealer will offer better discount

I am not sure about those days but not anymore, at least since i have been living here for the past three years.....
even non-tourist places you cant get any better deal (comparing to Msia)....sometimes they do offer 30-40pct off for selected model - even that is only equivalent to Malaysia price....
notwithstanding, for Rolex or other popular major brands, no discount at all, just the 6.5pct vat as you rightly pointed out.....
The only benefit that i see buying here is the variety of watches available and the stock of popular watches can be easily obtained....
