Title: Hard to decide which watch to buy, can anyone guide?
Post by: coldiac on January 27, 2013, 09:59:56 AM
Well, first of all, I'm new to this forum. Nice knowing all sifu here sharing out all your knowledge and now it's my time of the year getting a new watch. Well pretty much celebrate the upcoming CNY and also my birthday.

I'm currently crazy over Ball watch and went to one of the AD in KK being shown a Ball engineer 2 chronometer red label 40mm. Well it's quite well build and the offer is good at around 6k but only I still cant make up my mind.

So any sifu can guide me, or even recommend any watch which is good, automatic, my budget is not more than 10k. Thanks in advance.

If you like that particular Ball watch, the Ball watch should be your watch. Everything else from here is just our opinions and our tastes. Taking advice from random strangers is risky.

Ball is a decent brand. Good ETA mechanisms and nice designs. The Tritium glow tubes sets it apart from others.

Bro Coldiac,

You located in KK?
PM me your number can?
Trying to get more members in KK to organize a gtg.
As to your preference for the Ball model, they are pretty well built.
Budget of 10k will get you something really nice, and at the end of the day, get one that you like.

Hanz, i just visit KK the other day, I'm based in Tawau at the moment. So yeah, why not, meeting watch lover sounds interesting. Hopefully will get what i wanted.

Still havent decide, so not going to buy yet. Anyway, gonna make up my mind before CNY. lol

Dont rush if not sure. Browse around till you find the watch that you cant get out of your mind.
Besides Ball, for up to 10k, other brands that come to mind are Tudor, Maurice Lacroix, Longines, Oris, Tissot, Frederique Constant, Louis Erard, Seiko.... there are so many. It's your choice man... Happy Hunting! :Dancing_banana:

Any of these watches that suits both your budget and your likings, will do. Importantly, its what you like, not others.
If you are asking for advise on the watch's pedigree or movements, than I am sure the many sifus here can help explain to you.

it's essentially a Ball trying to be an Omega Aqua Terra, but with the addition of the Day window which i find spoils the look of the dial.

I think the Aqua Terra costs nearly twice that of the Ball Engineer II and that's without Ball's Tritium tubes. So it looks like a good deal to me. That's my opinion.

go for Omega if budget around 10k,

for 1st timer, maybe u should slim down to 5k for a Ball Diver 1st before stepping into 10k or above budget, get to explore more and u will finally get to know which type/style of watch suite u the best

avoid getting Ball watch with chonograph, had many exp with QC problem :Scolding:

If you are looking to expand your horizons beyond the Ball that you were looking at; my own personal recommendation is that you look at the Omega and Tag Heuer watches. Since I am a fan of their diver watches, I recommend you look at their Seamaster and Aquaracer lines respectively. I believe there will a few that will fit your budget.

Remember, if you ask for recommendations, you will probably get plenty of opinions that will vary and may or may not be appropriate for you. Keep that in mind as these are just our opinions and don't get confused. If the Ball watch really still appeals to you after you have looked at our recommendations, you should just go ahead and get it. I think your original Ball choice is pretty good. It's not for me personally as I would have chosen an Omega Aqua Terra myself (with the month complication).

The Aqua Terra Annual Calendar is more than 3-4 times his budget.

Im not sure if you looking for a dress watch or sport watch or all rounder but if ur budget is 10k++ I have to poison u to consider Longines, especially their Master Collection line. Assuming ure looking at new watches only, I believe thats the best looking dress watch or work and weekend watch u can find at the range and for me personally its a true beauty. U have to look at the dial close up in person to appreciate it. If u look down a few threads u can find another forum member who was considering Longines or baume mercier and I think he made the absolute best choice.

Buy it in leather btw. Hope I have given u some food for thought

Bro. If I were you, I would definitely pick up a pre-owned Omega Speedmaster Professional aka. The Moonwatch. You will be buying a remarkable piece with a great history and of course a truly handsome and versatile watch. It will not look out of place with formal or casual wear and looks great with a variety of straps.  A mint piece could be had for less than RM10k and will be within your budget.

When looking for a watch, first time - always go for the best and highest end that you can afford (at material time) and of course, that watch must sing to you.

The value of 2 watches in hand are not necessary better than 1 watch of the same value.....unless you may want to go for quantity...

No point going for some substitution which you may regret later.

I second that.. Pre-owned Omegas have good value for buyers generally. Just don't get one that's too old (say >5 years old), as the servicing costs are very high!! Just my 2 sen.. Good luck to your quest!

I totally understand your feeling and frustration when u see something u like but have that 50/50 things going on in your mind.

I bought this 2 days ago, fell in love with it when the SA hand it over for me to try. i just love the clean and classic look of this Ball. Spend almost 4 hours  :( :( :( in that shopping mall b4 i hit the button. (later scolded by wife "kaw kaw" bcos of late picking her up  :Scolding: :Scolding: )

So, no worry, just follow your heart n of cos your budget n make the move. Too many suggestions make harder decisions making. (This will never end once you started  ;D ;D good luck )

Ball is nice watch where u wear at dark place and night time, u may try the skindiver as a begin...
Well, in addition if u not sure which one is your ultimate choice. Always go to watch shop get a test/try for 5 minutes as to make sure one of them kiss your wrist deeply~

If Ball watch is already in your mind go for it. I'd been there before. You'll feel regret afterward if you immediately change your mind by the time you want to buy that watch. Once I've made up my mind , I'll never change it even the salesperson keep shovelling me the watch that he likes actually. I don't like that situation. Ball watch hydrocarbon is definitely the good choice. It will go even if you wear it for a meeting or casual evening with it sporty design. happy shopping bro !

servicing cost of an omega > 5yrs is not necessarily very high.
its only marginally higher than for a new movement, but also depends on what complications it has.
the older non-coaxial ones from 90s onwards are also based on ETA2892, which means they're not terribly expensive to service.

What about cost of servicing vintage Omega? I suppose it wont cost too much for a simple watch like de ville?
PS - Sorry if the question is not appropriate under this thread

what about these 2 watches??? im planning to get a Oris Skeleton or Omega Seamaster. The oris is a really nice elegant piece of watch but priced around Rm6k. The design is great but the price is little high considering it has no other function. Omega is priced at RM9k,10k which is about 60% higher than Oris skeleton but the quality is obviously more superior than the skeleton.
Its a little hard to compare those 2 watches. Oris is more like a dress watch, it can be somewhat too flashy, due to the design, to wear as a everyday watch, especially when you are in a mamak stall with friends. Omega is more to a sport watch and its a classic design of seamaster. Classic not flashy, good to wear in many ocassions.
what you guys think?? and also, any tips to get the watch at a little more discount in Malaysia?

10k you have to go for those swiss made middle low range company, mido, certina, tissot, etc then you can get a high rank model in their watch. Omega i dun think u can get a nice series with 10k

u can find service prices here - http://www.omegawatches.com/customer-service/watch-intervention/service-prices

so vintage deville, most likely falls under cat 3.
you can d/l the list of what each cat a movement falls under on that page.

Have you considered Seiko?

Their SARB series offers a lot of watch for the $$$, the SARB021 especially is a phenomenal watch.    Fit and finish shames Tissot, Hamilton, Mido etc in that price range.

Closer to your RM10,000 limit, the SARN models are absolute honeys.

I think it is Longines, not "longings" issit?
For me, the answer to the TS is go for the Ball that you wish for.
To Khorkaryong, for dress watch, I prefer the Oris, for multiple occassion, the Omega will be the choice. But the Omega is not <RM10K, issit not? I believe it to be > RM10K.

Seiko mid-end to hi-end watches can rival the Swiss counterparts. Check out Grand Seiko.

GS quartz models are now down around US$1,800 BNIB from an AD since the yen has fallen.  Autos now start a little over US$3k.  Just beautiful watches.

Yes, for autos fan, it is worth to get the GS when the Yen is dropping.
In Malaysia, I believe the GS available will be limited in the models from the AD.
