Guys,
Am considering a new Rolex.
And also my first Rolex actually. To be worn daily for work & leisure.
Which do you guys recommend?
1) SS Datejust 2
2) Submariner Date
3) GMT 2
Gonna take the plunge in February.
-
Submariner Date 116610LN
-
Definitely the submariner. Dressy enough for you to use for work and sporty enough for you to use for leisure.

Only 3 choices?
Why not go after the new YM? I see it as the perfect dress and sports watch combined. If you must choose between the above 3, it will be easier if you narrow down your needs.
1. Datejust 2 is the classic Rolex. Nothing to say here. If your work means sitting in the office, it's fine. If outdoor, it's too plain.
2. Submariner Date is the Rolex icon. Nearly everyone will choose this. If you must pick this, go green.
3. GMT2 if you need the 2/3 timezone feature. Else go with the Submariner Date.
Personally, I try to avoid rotating bezels.
-
Why not save up more and go for Daytona stainless steel black dial since its your one and only Rolex. Better to get a top end model not to mention classic styling :)
Or if you dont like it then get submariner then, its the watch & the design of it made Rolex well known  Like Gmac said, it is also suitable or dressy and sporty occasion too
-
Sub date.
But, why stop then?
-
Hi
Put both sub & gmt ceramic side-by-side. Imo, the gmt stands out.
Datejust 2 fluted gold bezel is hugh & loud, unless you have big wrist.
Of course, the daytona ss black will always b the big brother(again imo)

Ermm, I'm not a taukeh or holding a high post in a big establishment.
I'm just an employee. Just looking for something to reward myself.
So budget is an issue, I prefer something around RM20k or just slightly over.
I spend most if the time indoors, sometimes outdoors. Do I really need a sports watch if I spend more time outdoors?
-
The Datejust TT, not the SS, 36mm is the more common dress Rolex, recognizable anywhere and from anywhere.. The Datejust II is 41cm. The new GMT IIc has a polished centre link (PCL) bracelet, and this polished part easily attracts scratches. The Sub has a satin finished bracelet, comes with a smart-working Glidelock (which is more versatile than the GMT IIc's Easylink).
If you should have only one Rolex among the 3, the Sub is more likely to give you more satisfaction. Then again, if you don't mind the scratches on the bracelet of a new RM20k-plus watch and like to have a 2nd or 3rd time zone (perhaps you have family members overseas), then the GMT IIc would be a good choice. ;D

Bro just my opinion since i went flipped alot of watch before i end up with a sea dweller. When i reflect back on my "journey" I feel pissed off at myself wasted alot of money on other watch which eventually ended up with sea dweller. That why in a way you be saving you money in long term as you had the best of best rolex can offer from the start (you would have to pay more at the start). You will start thinking about "upgrading" to better rolek if you get one of these watches. Tat what happend to me now :HammerHead:
Just my two penny :) At least you made the right choice at the start by looking at Rolex. You will never go wrong with it, they are famous for a reason
-
Go for the subs..But then again..with an extra budget of around rm25k u can have both pre owned subs & GMT Master 2..Hope I poison u enough!! Hehehehe.. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Do u go diving with your "luxury" watches? If no thn I ll go for 116710 in this case.. u would never go wrong with sub or GMT..
-
GMT. Much more balance in proportion than the new Sub with those giant lugs.
Regard
Tyler
-
if I have the budget, the GMTIIc will be my choice, it does have more 'pop' than the rest of the 2.
Daytona has no date, for daily used don't think is that suitable....
-
GMTii; a do it all watch. Don't worry about scratches, just send it for servicing every 5-8 years and it'll look brand new or you can have it all brushed.
Great and very useful third GMT hand with all the robust and rugged look.
Like Tyler, I do agree that I do not like the boxy maxi case of the new subs.
Cheaper than a sub with more function to boot.
-
Just out of curiosity, I noticed that nobody recommended the SS DateJust 2. Any obvious reason why it is not so popular against the Sub or GMT?
-
I'll go for the sub , I don't like the green gmt hand on the new GMT, if only they keep it red like the old one
-
Sub Date for me.. but I'd prefer the Daytona or the new YM.
-

I like the the DJ 2 as well with the dressy design, but i prefer 1 that is more versatile that i can do it all , bring it whereever i go & matches whatever i wear furthermore cannot bring myself to pursue the thoughts of wearing a DJ any further after i saw alot of coffee shop taukey also wearing 1 :Laughing_on_floor:...
-
Gmt2.

I think its because you mentioned you want a leisure watch as well. You have to be more specific when you mentioned leisure...does it including diving or sports? Or just hanging out with friends? If it is the former, 95% would recommend the sub. If leisure just means hanging out then DJ will be fine. Since the DJ is very dressy with its polished finish, using it for sports would attract a lot of hairline scratches. That is why the sub with its brushed finish is recommended.
-
GMTII
-
why is it no one proposed the latest Explorer II with freccione hands

The Datejust TT or solid gold is no doubt as popular among contractors, coffee shop taukays, pasar borong bosses, as it is popular among the middle and upper middle class. In HK, taxi drivers, office clerks and the like also wear the Datejust.. but why should that bother anyone who likes the design and durability of this Rolex from owning one? The Datejust model has fundamentally lasted well over 60 years, and is probably among the best selling product from this watch-maker. It's movement, Cal 3135, is a proven work-horse.
I read somewhere that the Daytonas, especially the solid gold ones, were favorites among the underworld bosses.. but it still ranks as a grail watch for many watch enthusiasts. I personally don't fancy it as it doesn't have a date function.. ???
-
Any of the 3 n you won't go wrong, since you are not selling it later .regards tony.
-
can i throw in something else?
39mm explorer I :D
i never understood why the DJ II is 41mm, perhaps they wanted the bigger bezel to adorn it with fancy stuff.
but among your choices, i would probably go for the sub.

+1 for 39mm Explorer. Understated and goes well with almost any attire.

maybe because it was a multiple choice question with only 3 answers? :HammerHead:

Most buyers tend to look at the Datejust as a dress watch only and not sporty enough. Some of the newer dials are quite eye-catching too. But the Datejust 2 with the wider bezel look off to me. And from most comments posted on them above, it looks like an "Ah Pek" watch..
-
Now I understand. It could just be me, but even if I were to decide to buy either the Sub or the GMT, I don't really think I would wanna wear my RM2xk watch to my sport sessions. Having said that, I could just be me.

Buy them pre-owned with scratches already included and you won't bother so much about where you wear them and what you do with them on..
-
Bryank... I think you fit the profile of someone who would wear a Datejust 1 (36 mm) TT. That was my first Rolex many many years ago. You can't go wrong with that! ;D
-
How old are you? If you r relatively young, sport watch will look better on you. Datejust looks awkward if you are below 40 y,o in my opinion. Whereas submariner and gmt can be both sporty and dressy. You wont have issue even wearing them with your suits. However, t shirt and jeans just look funny with datejust in my opinion.
If there is only one rollie, i will pick submariner as submariner has been one of the most iconic rollie sports watch. GMT 2 is a good choice if you do travel. I never have any gmt or dual time watch and certainly keen to consider one.
-
In my profession, having something in common with coffeehouse taukehs, contractors, pasar borong taukehs, middle & upper class society is actually a not a bad thing
My leisure time are mostly spent with my family. 90% indoors.
To be honest, I'm a little bit biased towards the SS DJ2. Thought it looks great with Roman markers & blue dial.
But still not 100% decided yet... ::)

Still think you should get the sub-date 116610LN, but if you are drifting towards getting the DJ2, here are some pics (blue dial, but no roman numerals sorry)....

saw that on a guy's wrist and it looks damn cool and sweet

Bros, the one pictured is a White Gold DJ2 leh.
I'm only going for the SS DJ2,.which looks very different. The fluted bezel will be too flashy for me.
Sub No-Date is also under consideration... so difficult to make a choice... ???

Bro, maybe it's better u go to ad first to try out few models then shortlist to 1 0r 2 definite models and u ask the members here for opinion....it seems u r still totally undecided and hard fir people here to answer yr question. Btw, some models like the sub date and gmt may be hard to obtain here in msia.
God bless,
Harken.
-
Sub is nice, more subtle and won't get bored as an everyday watch . Whereas the gmt is more flashy for having a polished bracelet compared to the sub , since both the ceramic bezel are already flashy enough compared to their predecessor, i think the polished bracelet is slightly overboard.
Therefore , it will be the sub if i would have given a choice. And u can always sell you sub for the datejust II later since the pre-owned market for sub has always been good . !
-
i would pick the Sub, classic Rollie....never go outdated no even after 10 years....
-
Listen to your own heart.
I don't think Datejust II is a less interesting watch compare to Submariner or GMT Master II.
Datejust II ends up become the most unique when everyone opt for a Sub or GMT.
Did I mention it is also different from its ubiquitous brother, Datejust?
-
U mean the 36mm DateJust? I have a pretty big wrist, so I assume a larger watch would look more proportionate on me... rite?

Between a SS Datejust II (41mm) and the new Explorer II 42mm, the Explorer II has more wrist presence, newer movement, more rugged use and holds its value better in the long term.
See how it looks on my 6.5 inches wrist:

Then sub-date and gmt are also way above yr budget. And dj2 is just slightly less.
Hate to say this but it seems that every time members here give suggestions you will change the goal post. I think we r heading no where!!! This thread can go on forever and still reach no conclusion. Are u serious about buying or just play play only?

It's best to find the watch you like the most and if it's above your present budget, wait until you have enough to get it. Always a bad idea to buy something within your budget, even if you don't really love it and find out later it doesn't appeal as much to you after some wear.
-
My advice to you is follow your first instinct. It seems u have an initial preferenfe for the SS DJ2, I highly recommend u go to an AD and try that guy on and if it still sings to you, u shld get that piece. Dont make the same mistake as me, ifnu make ur purchase 100% based on ppl opinion u will come to regret it and always look at the ss dj everytime u see one and wonder ifnu made the right choice. Habing said that offcourse therws notjing wrong with asking for opinions n advice just not based ur decision 100% on them. If after getting feedback ur gut still says tjat model it seems the choice has already been made.
I say go for it! I love the DJ line

This is the best advice. It is very true. Save more to get something you really like. Go for something that you truly love. Just wondering what your budget is? Some watches are really within reach once you go pre-owned as opposed to new. Whatever your choice, just show some pics when you finally make your decision.

GMT 2.
Two tone gold and stainless steel. Black ceramic bezel. Dressy and sporty IMO.
:Dancing_banana:

Very sound advice. The reason I ask this question is that I don't get the chance to drop-by the ADs whenever I got time cos I'm located in JB. No ADs here. Its either I travel up to KL or to Sg which I dread due to very ridiculous traffic jams at the causeway.
The reason I started this thread is bcos i wish to hear more opinions, the pros & cons, the vital points which I might overlook & recommendations before I head up to KL for THE PURCHASE.
I always understand, that nothing beats trying on the watches & see which sets my heart on fire. Honestly, if i didn't start this thread, I am sure I would have settled for the SS DJ2. But now I have learnt that THE ROLEX is actually the Sub. That has somehow changed my decision a bit as I'm not so sure the SS DJ2 is the right choice for me till I try it out at the AD in abt 2 weeks time.

I have the resources to get something above my budget, and my budget is more abt how much I am willing to spend. I was a pretty disciplined fella (thrifty some may say) before got bitten by this watch bug. So spending RM20k+ on a watch, I gotta be pretty darn sure I get the watch I won't regret later. I might consider to spend a little bit more if needed but best not :HammerHead:. I'm just trying to reward myself after the effort I put in my work.

THE ROLEX is actually the Daytona...
-
Walaueh, I googled "the most iconic Rolex" & the results points to Submariner No Date. How come its Daytona? Mind to enlighten me?

It looks "cleaner" for sub no date. Still I love d date function.my choice still sub wit date.as for Daytona,is more higher end n it is chrono.anyway, just short list ur choice n try it in ad.left it and which stay in ur mind!go n grab it!my 2 cents
-
My take is you go for sub.
1. DJ resale value is lower and less versatile if you match it with clothes
2. Forget explorer or gmt master since you don't travel for work and if likelihood you won't wear it when you holiday at other countries
3. Daytona - the most expensive model for Rolex but that doesn't mean it's THE watch. If you need a date function, this is not the watch for you. I didn't get this watch because I want a watch with date function
The question now is if you want the green sub or the black one
-
yeah, i agree. if i were to get a Sub later, i most probably would go for the Sub ND, cos looks cleaner & better balanced. never quite like the cyclops magnifier lens.
in regards to the Explorer, never quite catch my eyes, dunno why.
and of course Daytona is out of my league :-[ me makan gaji only :HammerHead:
i can see lots of Sub supporter here
maybe i'll become one later
-
Walaueh, I googled "the most iconic Rolex" & the results points to Submariner No Date. How come its Daytona? Mind to enlighten me?
Submariner No Date is iconic because of the links to Comex and James Bond and it's the only model that has barely changed since it was introduced.
And I don't think the Daytona is the most expensive model for Rolex. The Yachtmaster 2 and Sky Dweller would hold those places if they were ever released in steel only (assuming we are only talking about steel models).
Once you catch the Daytona bug, you would agree it is THE Rolex.
-
and of course Daytona is out of my league :-[ me makan gaji only :HammerHead:
So you do like it but cost is the factor? Save a bit more and it's within reach. Don't settle for a lower model just because of budget. Once you own one, your eyes will wander for the next.

No la bro, never considered the Daytona. Not in the near future.
I guess I can count the DJ2 out now. Most probably the Black Sub or GMT2. But have to try them out first.
-
Daytona and Milgauss are special to me. Sport watch with case similar to Rolex dress watch.
Classic yet sporty. ;)

A quick pic - sorry for the rumpled appearance.
I just woke it up from sleeping in the watch box. ;D

If it has to be a singular Rolex, this is mine - the two tone stainless steel/gold GMT 2. IMHO, it's dressy and sporty at the same time. The role of "Iconic no-date chronograph" in my collection has been taken by the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch.
-
Wah, Gold GMT is too much for me leh.... but looks very nice
initially i did consider the Milgauss to but later opted to SS DJ2 as to me, they are more dressy

Check out the Mechants' Sales Corner.. you can get very good deals there, and the merchants' references are usually first rate!

I love this model, IMO the nicest looking 2 tone Rolex out there. The gold Numbering on the dial really makes it POP.
For stainless steel only, in order of blinginess:
Datejust 2 -> GMT2 -> Sub
One of my bosses has the fluted bezel DJ2. REALLY BLING. When I'm speaking to him, the fluted bezel just jumps out and is super shiny. And for most people, fluted bezel= Rolex.
GMT2 is practical, has a nice extra feature. Quite similar to the sub other than the numbering on the bezel and the polished centre links. Another boss wearing this, bracelet pretty bling, but not too over. Definitely noticeable.
Sub is the most boring, common and practical. Unlike the GMT which is hard to set (no quick-set date, annoying & GMT hand also mafan to adjust). Sub is THE man's Rolex, but it's pretty boring lar.
It's up to ur heart, don't settle on "normal". For example I was choosing between the Planet Ocean & Seamaster Chronodiver. Since "the" Omega diver was the Planet Ocean, I was tempted to get it even though I thought it was boring. In the end, I ended up with the Chronodiver because I loved the blue bezel & Chrono function as well as the "bling-bling" bond bracelet. Sometimes love for bling > safe and practical.
-
I would definitely go for Rolex Datejust II.
The sub is a nice watch but DJII is a very nice watch. Just go to AD and give it a try and see which one sing to you the most!
-
i would pick either datejust 2 or Sub....
-
i must say the reflected sunlight on my wife's white gold fluted bezel is :Startled: :Startled:

Submariner......

Good choice! But prepare for your first heartache when you see the first of many scratches on the polished centre links (PCL) and the clasp. ;D

Most recognizable Rolex.
The fluted bezel is bling!!
Congratz and wear it in good health

Yeah, been really careful with the watch, but in war, battle scars are inevitable. Just have to accept it :Praying:

Very nice choice!
Scratches on the fluted bezel won't be obvious. When the PCL get badly scratched up, a good wipe with Cape Cod cloth should restore it.

Nice. Thank you for sharing. At least there is an end product after all the discussion and opinions. Congratulations on a really nice piece.

Funny though, I'm already have my mind on a lookout for a sports model in the near future. Maybe a pre-owned rollie
