How do you fellas convince your spouse to let you buy these nice watches.......
Need some advice.
I had to go through 3 bloody rounds of verbal debates and silent treatment, before being allowed to get first watch of 2012/2013, the ap ro 15400.
wish for a iwc portuguese auto.

Exactly... once she got what she wanted, you have the "licence" to get what you want....

My better half had no interest in watches initially but after accompanying me to bookshops buying watch publications, visiting watch retailers to check out watches and seeing me spend hours going over my mini collection, she eventually took interest as well.
Passing down my previous watches to her and explaining the horological history, movements eventually equipped her with a good basic knowledge.
Besides I convince her its better for me to splurge my spare cash on watches rather than other women & gambling (I omitted wine, women & song coz I love my alcohol....)
She also appreciates my giving up previous active hobbies where she worried about my safety and me settling for alternate sedate activities like watch collecting and photography.. ;)

Not watches but stopping this trend of delivering watches introduced in SIHH/ Basel months later. Seems more and more companies are doing this.....
-
Preowned president 18238 only.

I don't understand. You don't want them to introduce during SIHH or deliver sooner? ???

Yeah... maybe make the watches available soonest after introducing...
Or do like movies or video games... let us know the release date.
-
Its already "released" during the fairs.
But "delivery" date is a whole different story my friend.
-
My guess is during the SIHH/Basel fairs, the marketing / sales people are just gauging the response and taking orders for shipments / allocations to the regions around the world. Hence full scale production only begins after 1Q, delivery months later in the year. If the order is larger than projected, then the pieces may reach some shops later than expected.

Delivery of watches introduced in SIHH or Basel soon after. 2 or 3 months later I can understand, almost a year later? Really... I don't really know about the mechanics of manufacturing but I don't think these watch companies actually makes 1 piece for SIHH and Basel and only go into full production after the exhibition.

Most ladies have no interest in mechanical watches. They just like how it looks. Now, if you are lucky enough to have a wife who has no interest in expensive timepieces, I'm sure she will make up for it with diamonds and bags, shoes etc..

Exactly right again bro!! hahaha
If they are not interested in watches, there's always LV, Gucci, Prada, Hermes, Cartier, Tiffany's to keep them occupied... hurts all the same... :Laughing_on_floor:

Wish list 2013
1. AP RO 15300st - preown/new
2. JLC NS alarm
3. Lange 1

I have a sneaky feeling that 2013 is gonna be `worse' than last year...having a list (15 watches) as a guide and also with some surprises expected to surface in the pre-owned market...its gonna be a `burn a big hole in my pocket' year for me...looking forward to the next 12 months...work hard, stay focussed and pray that everything works well.
May we all enjoy the `burning' sensation at areas near our pockets...need I elaborate where?...well its worth it! :)

Well, of course they will probably not make only a single piece for SIHH / Basel. But if your hypothesis is that they are already in full production mode in 1Q but intentionally only selling and delivering the finished products at the end of the year or 1Q of the following year, then this will require these companies to intentionally carry high inventory and finished products (with resulting additional storage, security, insurance costs........etc) in their books for many months.

Enkidu,
True what you say, but I would guess it is an on going process with these companies. As such, I would expect the pieces to come out sooner rather then later. Look at IWC, about 2 months after SIHH, the pieces are already on the shelves. I am sure that the watch companies do not have single production line where they have to finish one production batch, retool, and then start a new watch production. Unless they are dependent on outside suppliers and that is slowing them down. Or they already have too much on their plate as it is.....

Fast to market with their products.... Unlike Panerai, Tudor.....

As my wifey never understood the need to own more than 2 watches, I usually lock my new acquisition in my office locker and only let it surface when time is right. Of course, I always under declare the price/value of the watch :)
Anyway, I have a modest wishlist this year:
(i) A pre-owned Sea-dweller M series (only if 2013 is kind to me financially);
(ii) A pre-owned GMT coke.
-
PAM 422
PAM 305
Rolex DeepSea
wish to get either 1 will be good enough for me.

Hi fellow members, took up some of the advice and tried educating lady boss. Plan back fired, she looked up the web and found a piece she 'wants' and emailed me, along with the following quote 'get me this before you can get yours, no compromising this time!'

Learned something, never try to convince your other half on your hobbies. Keep it a secret til death.

Your wife sure has excellent taste!!! I'm guessing this piece is about RM100k? White gold right?
-
The pic is from chrono24, checked it up and it is PP grand complication Perpetual Calendar. Ref No: 5496P-001 in Platinum going for a cool USD 93,000. WTF....
She is indirectly saying you can forget about this hobby dude.
-
I think she's trying to say aim high, work hard. ;)
Do you like the 5496?

Wifey knows that current financial situation will not be possible for this type of luxury. Therefore even she like, I cannot buy. So end of day, cannot buy anything anymore.... until she forgets about this matter in few months time. Hopefully.
The PP is nice but not for me now. maybe when a little more matured, in 40's.
As for now, I would prefer the portuguese auto 7 days with white dial and blue markers.
I think she's trying to say aim high, work hard. ;)

Wow your wife sure has some high class taste.
Not only did she choose Patek Philippe, she chose the Patek philippe Grand Complications line of watches! and to top it off she chose the Perpetual Calender option in Platinum! The most expensive material a PP can come with!
If i remember correctly this watch retails in Malaysia for about RM384k after discount. But if you decide to get it, this watch is rather very hard to find and i suspect a waiting list of a few months is needed minimum. PP grand complications that are high in demand may sometimes command a waiting list of one year or more and even that you may have to wait longer. Sometimes we have to hit the second hand market to obtain these beautiful pieces.
This watch is correctly classified as a Holy Grail! What a beautiful piece. Any PP watch that comes in Platinum is basically the company's way of saying this particular model has reached its pinnacle of excellence. The platinum version is the be all end all piece. The final stamp of perfection. Find solace that your wife didn't choose the other models in the Grand Complications line. My dream of all dream holy grail would be the 5208, however that piece retails for about RM2.8 million..... maybe... one day... who knows.
The above piece i feel would be wasted on your wife even if you got her as this is normally a men's watch but more importantly as she is new into watches she simply won't appreciate the perfection that is the 5496 model.
I always thought that if you made the money and you have set aside for normal expenses, kids education, future planning and all if you have excess you should be able to enjoy, within reason offcourse, the pleasures of life. After all you worked hard for it. However if its a joint account with your wife's hardwork also in there, then offcourse you need all the permission you can get. If however you already discussed something with her to save up for something big like a new house or something then i can understand her reluctance. Maybe you can consider a Ladies Patek Philippe or a nice Frank Muller ladies watch to give her as a birthday present as a compromise if you have the excess cash.
-
Hi,
My wish list would be just an Omega planet ocean with the 8500 movement.
Although a year is a long time and the list can always get longer. Ha-ha.
-
Personally, I dont have a wishlist anymore. All I am going to do in 2013 is to sell all the unworn watches and upgrade them.
-
My wishlist for 2013...
1. The Hulk
2. Pre-Owned APROO
& if pocket permits..pre owned PAM 321...
Last year I bought 10 watches, mostly on impulse purchase!! My pocket koyak rabak already..Looks like this year will have to be more cautious coz got other important things to do..Otherwise the same problem will repeat again..The poison is deeply within me...Aiyooo...
:Blue: :Blue: :Blue:
-
My Wishlist 2013:
1) Lange 1 Timezone
That is all. Might have to go into 2014 for this... sigh
damn this wishlist is dangerous.. can't resist must add..
2) AP Royal Oak Offshore Panda
-
I would like a patek philippe perpetual calender..... drool......
-
The only watch on my wishlist (which is highly unlikely that i will ever own one) is the Lange 31. I can only wish for it year after year :Laughing_on_floor:
-
1. GS hi-beat
2. sub ND
3. GO panolunar
4. PAM 372
one down ;D
-
Bought enough in 2012. My bank needs a rest in 2013. Will love to own PP5159 in 2014 or 2015 though. But at this stage i am quite happy with my collection.
2013 wishlist is probably to reduce my current collections to only 3 or 4 watches. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Going very slow...only bought a JLC NS Alarm in 2012. Have 2-3 more slots to fill up my watch box so have to be very selective. The list is consistent with 2012. List as follows (after striking out the JLC):
1. Blancpain FF
2. Harry Winston Midnight Big Date in RG or FPJ Octa Reserve in RG or RM10 in RG. Basically, i just want a rose gold dress watch.
3. Grand Seiko SBGE021/SBGA071 (after poisoned by David & JOS). I prefer the former because it's GMT (but it's harder to find - SG has no stock).
4. Omega X33 or the new speedmaster racing. Low in priority so can live without.
Well, i guess i'll go slow again in 2013 by buying either 1-2 watches.
Cheers.
James
-
Only one modest wish for 2013 for now :)
JLC reverso duo (SS or RG).
-
2013 whishlist
Ball Hydrocarbon Ceramic Xv
Vostok Europe lunokhod
Casio G Shock Ga110 :Praying:
-
only 1 which is a AP Skeleton Royal Oak
-
Sigh, I see poison everywhere.... but if I can get the vintage Zenith A386, I would be contented (until the next withdrawal symptom)..

Aiyah! Walked in an the AD said, "buy this!" Like NOS (New Old Stock), been in his sales display since late 2009. Not shifted since then, wants to get rid of this to his favorite WIS whale. Gave me a good discount that the Omega boutique cannot match.
The Panerai PAM 422 or 423:
Reconsidering them since the new SIHH 2013 models have been announced. The new PAM 507 (Black ceramic submersible) is my new target now. Or the new Bronzo.

See quite a few Lange here.
The Lange 1 was part of my wishlist for 2013 also and from pictures its a beautiful watch. But when i went to the AD the other day and put it on, really didn't quite meet my expectations.... not sure why .. maybe because my hands not suitable. :(

When looking at close up pictures I always felt the beautiful patented design of the lange 1 dials, subdial and date windows are more suited with a nice full big dial. Not very big but certainly not 39mm or less. Im sure a slightly bigger dial would make me love this watch. Ill try to look for the grande lange 1

A used IWC Mark XV/XVI Spitfire. Too bad there don't seem to be many around right now; those that are available are way too expensive.
Also the GS SBGM031 (on the right). I find it so beautiful to look at.

No go for the Zenith Espada.
Very disappointing.
I was enquiring at local AD for this watch for quite sometime.
Saw the watch in Taipei end of last year and I like it.
They finally got stock.
We verbally agreed on discount and final price.
I said OK. Asked the watch to be transferred here from KL.
Viewed the watch, OK... asked to size it...
Damn!! There is no half link.
Links are around 8-10mm in length.
It ends up either too loose or too tight... sigh...
Butterfly clasp so no micro adjustment.
I asked to abort the deal and my AD was kind enough to oblige.
She even said that she finds it weird that the fit is as such.
Well, maybe it's just not meant to be.

Some pics I took before the watch went into sizing.
After sizing, I have no mood to take any more pics... was busy removing and adding links but the result is still the same.
Either too tight, or too loose... :HammerHead:
-
Bro, does that come with leather strap instead of bracelet? Worse to worse put nato strap on the watch lo :o
-
Bro, does that come with leather strap instead of bracelet? Worse to worse put nato strap on the watch lo :o
Leather strap for this model is only for the rose gold cased model.
And the lug size is 19mm, hardly a good size for nato... and seeing this is a more dressy model, a nato would just look so wrong.
Knowing Zenith, the lug holes for the bracelet model and the strap model is different in the distance from the case.
Mount a leather strap on the bracelet version of the watch and it will leave a huge gap between the case and the strap.

Strange that it has no half links. Both you and AD have tried contacting LVMH directly to enquire?

Strange that it has no half links. Both you and AD have tried contacting LVMH directly to enquire?
Once they could not get it to fit my wrist, they called HQ to enquire and since they are more keen to close the sale after having the watch shipped over from KL, i will take their word for it as i believe they will be more careful with misinformation especially if it's a deal breaking one.
In the meantime, i have commented on Zenith's FB page and will wait for their feedback.

Hope it works out for you and let's not lose hope until you hear it directly from the horse' mouth.

A386!!! For real?!? Awesome my friend, can't wait for the reveal!!
-
Thanks mate! I've not been hopeful as interests have picked up strongly in the past couple of years whilst supply is very limited. So, it was a pleasant surprise when my recent watchmaker said he will help me hunt for it and he did!
He's still looking around for the original Gay Ferres ss band but it wont come cheap. The price of band alone is about EUR800. Think I will just live with a leather strap. But will go for test drive first.

No point going for a gf bracelet... it looks good with a strap and original pin buckle IMO.
-
great find bro, can't wait for the photos and wrist shots
Still awaiting for mine.....
-
Thanks! Good luck in your hunt, Terence. May you find the mark soon.
Han, not sure if mine comes in an original pin buckle. Prob just a normal buckle. Will see tom.

bravo my friend, bravo.
your acquisition never cease to amaze. 1st the breitling, now the El-primero. EP is always regarded as one of the most significant movement ever created, and you'd got the history on your wrist. Please tell me you found a tri-color variation.
Can't wait for your photos.
-
Thanks for your kind words, mate. Been quite lucky recently but still just a modest vintage collection. Probably chasing 1-2 more (another of my targets popped out suddenly) and plan to take a break after that. Is there an antidote for this poison?
Yes, it's the tri-color sub-dials one. Didnt manage to get UPS in time for today. Will have to be tom.
-
The compliment is genuine, you deserve it. I started to envy your luck now, or maybe you should start sharing your sources. ;D
I'm affraid the antidote for the poison is more watches. cheers.
-
The poison is stinging more rapidly. Was just asked whether am interested in Monaco 1133B NOS with box and paper. Another of my target! but alas the asking price is just way beyond my budget for a Heuer despite the rarity. Wish I strike the lottery tom. :Praying:
Ah well, cant get everything. Need to think hard about the other target... also difficult to come across but a much more affordable Heuer. :P
-
As promised, here we go! Hope it's ok to post the pic here.
Not on original band nor pin buckle. Still thinking between the GF band and a black leather strap.

Very nice indeed!!
Congratz on your acquisition.
Watch might have been serviced before as the crown looks smaller.
Original crown should be abit bigger... but not a big deal.

wear it in good health my friend.

WOW Han! You're spot on! Very sharp observation. The crown is indeed not the original factory with Zenith Star but looks like a service one with the square design. But yah, not a big thing to me.
Thanks Bezelnut. A dream come true for me.

Friend, this acquisition deserves it's own thread... and more pics!!!
-
Very nice piece bro! A real classic with the first automatic chronograph movement ever made with a full size rotor and a heart that beats to the 10th of a second. It can't get any more iconic than this.  Will see if I could pick up any vintage Zeniths when I am in Jap this weekend.

Friend, this acquisition deserves it's own thread... and more pics!!!
Han, you are really unbelievably good. I'm doing side by side photo comparison, and still cannot see the different.
-
Count the grooves on the crown.
8-9 grooves small crown.
Original bigger crown should be 11-12 grooves viewed from that angle.
It is also common knowledge that once the watch have been sent to service, the crown is the 1st part that gets changed.
I have no idea why they choose to replace the original bigger crown with a smaller one. (trying to steamline parts stock maybe?)
But as long as it is an original Zenith crown, it should not be a problem.
-
Now I can see it. I do found out that the original crown should have a dome surface with a Zenith star, maybe the camera angle it is not showing on this one.
Thanks for the lesson too...
-
Wow again. Thanks for sharing! I'm sure it's a service crown based on what I learned fr some Zenith forums earlier.
Would like to seek you guys' opinion on the GF band... if it's EUR550, do you think it's worth it? I've seen some at EUR800. Of cos, condition is prob different but think good enough.
Ok, will post more pics in a separate thread once I have some time this weekend.

Gotta revive this thread...
It's nearing the end of 2013... guessing how many of us got what we wished for? ;D
I checked back on my own posts and my wishlist did not materialize. :HammerHead:
Just too high priced....
Just wondering about some of you guys who posted... Read back from page 1 to refresh the mind maybe... makes for an enjoyable read...

One more to go to complete my 2013 wishlist.
-
My only wish is to have my home minister allow me to buy one more watch...and if that happens, I would get a Tudor Black Bay
DC
-
1. GS hi-beat
2. sub ND
3. GO panolunar
4. PAM 372
1 down (consider another GS but non hi-beat), 2 down, 3 down
no more interested on pam, my wishlist for this year is completed ;D

Update on 2013 wishlist
With only 2 months to go before the end of 2013, update as follows:
1 & 2 - unable to find pre-owned. Can't bring myself to buy new
3 - Still love it BUT held back by worries about it being a scratch magnet with a large brushed surface area
4- to-date no AD has stock of the FF with the nautilus or divemask rotor or the black DLC version.
5- acquired but not before acquiring several other minor pieces including another GS which was not in my original list...
I don't think the Omega Dark Side of the Moon will arrive in our ADs by end of 2013.
Anyone of the following in preferential sequence :
1. PP Nautilus 5712/1A-001
2. FPJ Chronometre series
3. AP RO 15400
3. Blancpain FF
4. Tudor Pelagos
-
The only watch on my wishlist (which is highly unlikely that i will ever own one) is the Lange 31. I can only wish for it year after year :Laughing_on_floor:
Still have not met my wishlist. Looks like this will be carried forward to 2014. Have acquired a VC "Deep Stream" Overseas Chrono, a Rolex 16800, an Omega Planet Ocean GMT and a Rolex 116634 in the process instead.
-
I didn't have a chance to come up with the proper list for 2013. So, here's a make-it-up-as-I-go-along list to date:
1) IWC Portofino Vintage got a good deal during CNY and pulled the trigger.
2)Grand Seiko somehow changed my mind along the way, and went for something more modest instead which is the Blue Saw tooth Monster
3)G-Shock, haven't decided which model yet ... :), maybe something to look forward to during x-mas
Looking forward to build my 2014 list ;D
-
My wishlist for 2013...
1. The Hulk
Manage to strike off only 1...but below are the list of my 2013 sins...
1. Ball Stormchaser DLC
2. Rolex 6694
3. B&R Fusion
4. PAM OO5
5. Ball NEDU Blue Dial
6. Tag Heuer F1 2012
7. IWC Portuguese 371438
8. PAM 292
9. Rolex 116610LV (Hulk)
10. Grand Seiko SBGR 029
Come to think of it, if I imposed more self restrained & not so "gatal tangan" & didn't browse MWF too much I might still be able to meet my original 2013 wishlist!! :HammerHead: :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Why the sudden lost of interest on pam?
there are few reason, but mainly due to change of taste with small and lighter watch preferable :)
-
My 2013 wish list:
1) PAM 312
2) Rolex Sub
:Praying:
Manage to get a PAM320 instead of 312 before end of 2013. Rolex sub got to be 2014/2015 wish list, eating roti now :'(

Its such an iconic piece.

2. Zenith Espada Black Dial. (No go for the reasons posted a few pages back)

ACtually that is good choice also. Saxonia also much value for money.

I am smitten also by the Richard Lange - Platinum case, white face, blue hands... Sigh... However, it is a manual wind, and at the risk of sparking a huge war here, I still prefer automatics. I know the back case view would be awesome though, without a rotor blocking that awesome view.
-
The Platinum Richard Lange has a silver dial and only the seconds hand is blued. Perhaps you are referring to the White Gold version?

Finally after 2 years in the making... finally able to strike No.1 off... wait for a more comprehensive review.
That's it for this year...
Stroke off 2 on the original list of 3... Although No.2 was a no go due to unforeseen circumstances... I was still quite focused... hehehe
No.3 will take some time to achieve... maybe never... never ever... ;D

Did not manage to complete last year's wishlist.
Carry forward to this year.
1. Zenith New Vintage 1969 Tricolor Dial. (or 38mm 36k vph Tricolour or Zenith Stratos Flyback 1/10th Tricolour)

Thanks bro! Just got the watch today. Loving it so far. The finishing is pretty awesome for the price. Haha...not too sure if the PML could be considered as haute horlogerie though. I will take more photos and write a review when I could find the time. Happy holidays bro!

Jlc master calendar 2013
Or Jlc ultra thin perpetual
To my surprise, my wishes did/going to materialise somehow (a clear sign that poison is running deep in my vein).
JLC ultra thin perpetual - bought its predecessor (JLC master perpetual) back in July
JLC master calendar 2013 - getting its grand father (JLC master moon black dial) in December
In addition, a few others that came in along the way
:P
