Be it a purchase, the path you took anything related to this hobby.
When i reflect back, there wasnt a single watch i bought that i "regretted".
Its the kind of watches i guess.
My mistakes would be the flea market finds. Nice and unique it may be, but the hassle of the watch being 2-5mins slow per day, taking it to service is just not worth it IMO.
Lucky i only made 3 mistakes buying in the flea markets. Lesson learned. Lucky not too big a mistake.
How bout you guys?
Is there a watch you bought that you thought WTF was i thinking? :P
Below is was my first flea market buy. Lovely Genta designed (originally) microrotor movt.
The other pics i cant find in my photbucket anymore.

Hey if your father is poor, then you are born unlucky,
If your father-in-law is poor, then you are stupid. :Laughing_on_floor:

More of the impulse purchases i made at the beginning of this hobby.

I think it's less on what I did and more on what I should've done.
What if we can wind back the time to 15-20 before with the knowledge we have now?
HOSEI LIAO!!!

The first mistake was putting poison on the wrist, the second was increasing the dosage of poison to make it more potent. fr tony..

What about one watch you bought that was a mistake?
Maybe my question was too broad and vague?

Every one which I bought was a mistake and the mistake seems to get bigger and bigger :Laughing_on_floor:

So far, I don't think I have made any in this regard. It usually takes me a long time to purchase a watch starting from the day I develop an interest in it until the day i actually buy it. To me, it's like a test of time, how much I really like it and whether I really want it.

Buying a lookalike watch from microbrand thinking it can be a cheaper course of entry(PAM or Rollie). I done this on too many occasion that I rather not list them all.
It doesn't work!
I end up with a watch that remind me I should have wait until I get enough funding. Now it sits at a far side of the corner, unloved :-[
That shouldn't happen to any watch. I'm going to horology hell for this. :(

Tyler

When we love n like it , we buy it. after some time when we got tired of it n try selling it we felt it was a mistake buying it in the first place. Well that's human nature., but here is something for thought: we always complain about our shoes until we saw some without feet..regards tony

I don't think I have made a mistake yet in this hobby because of the lessons learned earlier in life. I would like to share it with you guys.
When I first started collecting stamps when I was very young, I just collected any stamps I could lay my hands on. I then realised the mistake of that strategy as it creates a collection that is purely random. To keep me in check, I learned to write something about every stamp I've collected and from this journal/diary/log book, a distinct collection philosophy was formed. I researched what I wanted and then proceeded to try to get it.
I started collecting watches when I touched 40. I followed the same strategy. I started researching/writing about it and from there, my collection grew following a certain direction.

IMHO, if someone feels getting into the hobby is a mistake, then perhaps his hobby is just hunting, seeking and buying watches instead of collecting and appreciating the watches he bought. His primary interest lies in the thrill of doing the transaction, be it at an AD, a private seller or through the web. The watch is the secondary interest.
I guess Peter Takashi's question is whether we have made any mistake buying a watch which we later find inappropriate. In my case, yes, there was such a watch. Bought a Fortis 24-hr watch many years ago in Singapore. My deepest regret. As the hour hand went round once in 24 hrs (instead of the usual 12), reading the time required some effort from my inflexible brain.
-
Yups thats one i mean.
If there is any watch in particular sounded good on paper, looked good, tested, bought then later found out for one reason or another was not right.
-
My mistake:
Ordering a watch from a dealer because it looks nice in the catalog and magazine. When finally received (and paid for) looks terrible and ordinary - watch is now exiled in collection case, will one day give it away as a birthday present or sell.
-
Care to share which watch is it?
-
I have regrets with going too big. IMO big watches look awesome on the wrist but it just does not work for me. I do too much desk diving because I am always dropping or/and hitting something. I also like to keep my watches with minimal scratches ;D. These days 37-39mm is perfect and no bracelets.

My biggest mistake was paying RM2k premium for my 1st Rollie GMT II. Only Asians will do this kind of thing?
Ka-na-sai, will never do that again, man. :Scolding:
-
Getting to know my friend who is head over heels into watches esp Rolex. The rest is history
-
Haven't regret with any purchases yet. But I did pay slightly higher price (when I first started this hobby).
-
Instead of buying watches since 2003, I should have saved a bit more and started in 2005 and buy only Rolex sports range. But for all that I bought, no regrets.

I made a similar mistake as well.
After that, learnt that patience is virtue. shortly thereafter, I managed to get PAM390 at retail price! ;D

did not save enough $ to buy bigger watch :Laughing_on_floor:
-
That is partly why Rolex flourishes when people pay a premium over list. When reality sets in in a coupla years time, then you bang your head against the wall

Rolex did not "flourish" when a buyer pays over list price. The ADs/grey dealers are the culprits.

Oh Fortis, every other watch from you seems to be a "limited edition" nowadays.

This is the watch that I ordered from just looking at magazines and blog reports. Looks nice from a distance but when I started wearing it, the dial was just too busy and you had to squint and look very hard to figure out the GMT time. It will make a good present to someone that's not as fussy as I am.
The other watch that I bought suffering from the same situation is my Bell and Ross BR-02, that one is in exile due to quality issues. Beautiful watch but let down by bad support and quality problems.
1) It's slow. It loses time like 1 minute every few days (enough that I notice it straight away). Got into an argument with the dealer and sent the thing back and forth servicing which did squat for it's accuracy. I got fed up that it was spending more time being serviced than on my wrist. It ended when I swore that this would be the last B&R I will ever touch.
2) To add insult to injury, the BR-02 Rubber strap cracked and disintegrated while in my collection case. No, I wasn't abusing it or even wearing it every day. It was kept in a dark case in a typical Malaysian house (no air-con). The rubber strap just cracked and broke apart. No way I am going to buy a replacement B&R rubber strap from them and have it just fall apart in the box. It's on the velcro strap now but I hardly wear it nowadays. "Sim Thia" (the heart hurts), as they say when I look at it. I can post a pic of the dead strap as I still kept all the pieces.
Picture for illustration purposes. Mine has numbers on the dial.

My mistake: watches that look handsome but doesnt sit well on my 6.7 wrist. Eg: tec carrera n the Pam 88. So now I try on all watches for awhile before I pull the trigger (unless its a model where I already being used to eg Rollie oyster 36 & 40).

My mistake will probably be why didn't I pick up this hobby earlier so that I can buy some Pre-V Panerai at a much more attractive price back then... :(
