Title: Scaling Down Due to Economic Uncertainties
Post by: terrenceterrence on September 29, 2012, 09:28:36 PM
well...times are a-changing and dark clouds are a-coming ahead.

so opulence thoughts are aside and maybe it's time to scale down on my birthday present for myself this year. 116520 might have to wait.

Now a more modest consideration to mark my time in this earth. What do you guys think about a "birth year watch"? Yay or Nay?

Suggest you should at least consider getting an Air King instead of this jubilee bracelet Datejust. U already have a jubilee on your GMT. Also this watch does not seem to complement your age unless u want this to make you look more matured. My dad is wearing one from 1984, a Datejust with plexi, passed down by my grandpa. I have seen a nice pure white dial Air King with black 3 6 9 which is cool at other forums, not in production anymore.

Already have a blue 14000 Airking in the household which I gave to my wife for her birthday a couple of years back

Trust me. If you know the serial, you'll know that I am not young anymore

Hey when I was a Goat then, I bought an IWC Pilot Chrono and not a Datejust.

Just looking for a robust, affordable and reliable watch that is as old as me.

As I grow older the size and looks appeal to me more and more. Any other suggestions?

A DJ, well why not.

This particular one? Nay.

If I were in your shoe I would spend time looking for a special one. Since you have chosen DJ, the choice are plenty.

Regards
Tyler

If he is looking for his birth year his choice will be limited..

I sometimes see some colored dials on DJ.
Not sure if production is plenty.
I would try to hunt down some of those.
Terrence, can try Jpn.

I would suggest you buy the watch you like or hold off until you can. The idea of "scaling down" a purchase just for the sake of buying one may be good at first but then if you don't really feel for the watch, it might end up a bad idea later.

This particular watch isn't in terribly good condition by the looks of the bracelet endlinks.

I guess 1979 or late 70s most Rolex or the 16014 series the most popular. Rolex is the best bet for somethig which can last u another 20 years. And jubilee was the popular look and still is.

If dark clouds are coming you may not want to own a vintage / used watch which MAY need more maintenance attention. Get a new one...perhaps a 41mm Datejust II.

Thanks for the sound advice. Guess you guys are right. Take my time and forgo I necessary. The romantic idea of a birth year watch can wait.

I am pretty much through with a watch bigger than 40mm unless its the Rieussec chrono. Not stylish enough to carry anything bigger

The older I get, the allure of TT, gold and discreet pieces like these makes more sense. Sigh... Signs of impending old age

Woah... scaling down still means going for Rolex?
Whatever happened to the word "scaling down" nowadays? hahaha

Anyway, I am all for a birth year piece.
I believe every collector should have one.
It's nice knowing that the watch you have is the same age as you are.
I have had the luck of getting my birthyear watch without looking... call it destiny.

I bid you good luck in your search

the problem of getting a birth year piece of mid 1970s is uninteresting.  I am thinking 70s design watches are too retro, neither here nor there, except Rolex design.  Almost all come squarish, disco-like which is not very nice imo.
