Lie #1: The best replica watches are made in Switzerland, followed closely by Italy.
-- This is the biggest lie of all. All replica watches are made somewhere in Asia, mostly China. Saying that replicas are made in Switzerland or Italy is a lie intended to extract more money from the ignorant.
Lie #2: Replica watches are graded according to quality. C (or whatever) is the lowest and AAA+++ (or whatever) is the highest.
-- Who decides what is "C" and what is "A"? The "International Replica Watch Governing Board"? Pure nonsense designed, again, to get more of your dollars.
Lie #3: The movements in "Swiss made" replicas are identical to the genuine watch movements. 27 jewel movements are the best.
-- (See Lie #1 for "Swiss made".) Far from the truth. Very few replica watch movements come from anywhere but China and any watchman can immediately tell it's not genuine. There are no Asian 27 jewels movements in replica watches; only 25, 21, or 17. (Some newer replicas are powered by an ETA 7753, which does have 27J.)
Lie #4: The best replicas are 99% true to the genuine and will even fool an Authorized Dealer (AD).
-- Not true. While some may be close (picking a number is impossible) to the genuine, all replicas are flawed. Do you really think you can spend $200 or less and get a watch that's 99% identical to a $4,000-20,000 watch? As for fooling ADs, maybe. Common clerks are easily fooled, but seasoned ADs, upon close inspection, will know it's a replica.
Lie #5: The gold on "Swiss grade" replicas is much higher than on other replicas. The crown, bezel, and mid links are solid gold and the full-gold replicas are 5-wrapped (or 6-wrapped, or whatever).
-- While a few models have been shown to have solid gold mid links (Rolex replicas), the rest of the watch is gold plated or double or triple wrapped gold. ("Search" for threads on how this is done.)
Lie #6: The best Rolex replicas are made with 904L grade steel.
-- Big fat lie. Good replicas are made with 316L quality steel. Rolex is one of the few companies that use 904L steel and it costs 3 times as much as 316L. Replicas are not made with 440 steel, either.
Lie #7: Buying a replica watch is risky, but not if you use sellers from "Replica Review" sites.
-- What most people don't know is the "review" sites are owned and operated by the people who run the sites they recommend--it's very incestuous. These "review" sites are clever and it's easy to get taken in by their lies.
Lie #8: You can tell you're getting a good watch after a thorough examination of the web site.
-- Please. If you think everything displayed on the web is true, you deserve to be fleeced. Scam sites lie about everything, from the quality of their goods to their pledge to make sure every customer is happy. Many even post pictures of genuine watches, (Look for pictures where the watch hands are set at "10:10." Pictures of genuine watches seen in advertisements are always set to "10:10.") but send you junk.
Lie #9: Picking a good seller will always result in getting a good watch, one I won't have trouble with.
-- We wish. Quality control in replica watch factories is hit-and-miss, but mostly shoddy. One batch may be great while the next produces watches that are DOA. (Remember, making replica watches is illegal, even in China. Replica watch "factories" are usually small operations that can be easily moved or hidden from prying authorities.) What is true, though, is a good dealer will want to protect his/her reputation and will fix whatever is wrong.
Lie #10: Paying by COD is the best way to get the cheapest price. Plus, I can examine my watch before paying the courier to make sure I get what I paid for.
-- A really dumb thing to do and a huge red flag that you're dealing with a true scammer. They want cash because they know you'll scream foul to your credit card company the moment you see the junk you just paid $1,000 for.
One final point. Remember, replica watches are counterfeit goods. While it is not illegal to purchase or possess replica watches in most countries, it is illegal to sell them. Keep this in mind when using PayPal or communicating with credit card companies.

can i just put it this way? complex movements not normally have replica. In order to produce the mimic movements it involve fairly high cost that no longer cost effective. Even if they have, we can easily differentiate. Simple principle: too good or cheap to be true.
-
They tried to mimic the watches with complicated movement but almost alwiz they fail to provide all the functions or substitute with something similar. However, if u r not familiar with these complicated watches u will not know the exact functions any way. So, in the end most ppl will get conned.
They mimic iwc big pilot quite well (if you check you tube), I think u will find on the 3rd day, i suppose, if u can't see other signs of fake :)

Yen - Good read.
I believe to be a season WIS. You have to handle fake watches often to tell the difference between the fakes and the genuine.
During my 'younger' days, I used to spend my free time at the Petaling Street - and get to know that rollie tai-kor.
You can just feel it to tell the difference. Too bad, I have lost those 'touch' now. Haha.
Believe me, they even had those real 750k grade - solid gold case for your datejust. Just swap the genuine movement onto the case and hey....pestro.....you have one solid gold rollie king. Thats where those datejust case came from.
You can also put an ETA asian movement onto these genuine case and you will have a frankenstein watch. Scary ah??.....

Very nice article to read.
I totally agree with lie #4.What's the point of buying expensive watches if buying a fake one is 99% identical to genuine one.Like that many watch maker have to close shop already. :) Many ppl out there think that they bought a replica watch and it is as good as a genuine one.I hope after reading this article,it should clear out of wat everyone thought to be true. For me , it is better don have than rather buying a fake one.
Thanks...
-
I wonder what satisfaction is there in wearing something deceptive ?? Can anyone think of a reason? Even wearing a g shock is more honorable but darn even g shocks have fakes!! What will they think of next...
-
A cheaper fakes of the fakes :)
-
tot about buying watches online... and theres alot of concern regarding fakes... which scares me.
thank you for the post~ ^^
-
the greatest bullcrap of them all ; "AAA grade watches use the factory of the genuine watches' production line after business hours with all the same components and materials put into the original to produce the AAA replicas so why pay more for the original when they are in fact the same thing".
-
True!for the price of a 'swiss grade replica' i'd rather get myself a simple Tissot Le-locle.Imo at least its really Swiss made and has a real swiss eta movement.
-
Thanks for an insighhtful information on fakes.
From Chris - "Lie #2: Replica watches are graded according to quality. C (or whatever) is the lowest and AAA+++ (or whatever) is the highest.
-- Who decides what is "C" and what is "A"? The "International Replica Watch Governing Board"? Pure nonsense designed, again, to get more of your dollars."
Nobody put the grading from C to AAA+++ for the replica, only the replica sellers.
I was informed the least grade is for the very low quality fakes, while the A or AA is for fake with a Japanese (Miyota??) movement. For a Swiss ETA fakes the fake watch seller denotes this as AAA.
Agreed with Fred's comment.
From Q - "I wonder what satisfaction is there in wearing something deceptive ?? Can anyone think of a reason? Even wearing a g shock is more honorable but darn even g shocks have fakes!! What will they think of next..."
Well, not many people who are budget consious can afford the real deal. The foreign workers for example.
An analogy: I will get a vintage Rollie (model 6694) for RM2.5K - RM3.9K from pre-owned market as this model is no more in production. But for those who are not willing to pay for such amount, they can goto Petaling Street to get the same fake Rollie with Miyota engine for a mere RM180 only.
Agreed with Nick, getting a RM200 original Seiko 5 also better than getting a fakey watch.

Agreed with Nick, getting a RM200 original Seiko 5 also better than getting a fakey watch.
Funny thing is.I've seen fake Seiko 5's selling at RM40.God knows what fake they'll come out with!

Great info for newbie!

Great info to share, Chris  during recently visit was an eye-opened for me and some members of how replica can go even further contradicted to my previous perception. I am now quite nervous to deal with those online purchase... :Blue:
P/S : What seems fake is real, what seems real is fake

i do not condone any act of buying replica watch...in some perspective it is a crime of stealing.
However looking at other perspective, it is matter of demand. Lets look at G-Shock....it is not highly expensive....but you can get a fake one at below RM 30 (even RM 10) i often wonder why at first...till one day i had this conversation with this guy...
he is the gardener at my work place, wrapped around his wrist is the replica model of Tag...i come to him one day and tell him..."lawa jam" and smiled....he smiled back and said...this a cheap one...and he love the design bla bla bla...and we had long chat...
the thing is, i know how much he get paid....and it is quite a low one...and he definitely need a watch...for 100 ringgit he can afford for a watch, he can choose casio, q&q and a few unknown brand...he dont care about quality, he never understand the art of horology, he only want a watch that could tell time, and with good design....so he buy the tag...he is cool among friend and he dont need to mingle with those people who can afford real TAG anyway...no shame to him
goes back to G-Shock story, yes you can get a g-shock for RM 150++ but for someone who earn less than 1k a month...that is 10%++ of his salary....it make more sense to buy a fake g-shock for rm 20...and often it will last for a year or 6 months at least (though u can get unlucky it wouldn't last a day but for rm 10...they dont care)...economically, that make sense....and that make them look fashionable...that combine with their fake levis and dolce gabbana fake t-shirt, they enjoy what they could afford (fake levis that cost about RM 25 is much cheaper than cheap jeans brand like G.A Blue which will cost RM 60++ )
i bought replica when i was younger as i dont know much about watches....i dont do it anymore...but the journey to know a lot about watches though it may sound free, actually cost money....if you are capable of earning less than 1k, it is threatening to visit a watch shop , even the normal one in the shopping mall ....you feel insecure...for that you will never know what the shop could offer, instead you go to stall and pasar malam and only exposed so much with what available there....for those lowly income they are also not well educated to googles thing around...plus there isnt much website on watches with language they could understand...
no doubt, this story is not entirely true...there are people who can afford a real deal but goes for fake one for what ever their reason....
just my 2 cent....
my advice...best not to buy replica....but dont despise those who own one...everybody have their side of the story
-
Yes, people who wears replica watches has their reasons too.
I do not judge harshly on these people who wear replica watches. I only dislike people who can afford a real deal but goes for fake one for whatever reasons.
Mnazri.tan's comment : "if you are capable of earning less than 1k, it is threatening to visit a watch shop , even the normal one in the shopping mall ....you feel insecure...for that you will never know what the shop could offer, instead you go to stall and pasar malam and only exposed so much with what available there....for those lowly income they are also not well educated to googles thing around...plus there isnt much website on watches with language they could understand..."
When I started working and earning <RM1K, I go for Casio, as a means to tell the time. That time no mobile phone yet (only years later the bulky ATUR phone came in the market). And I was given a fake Rado watch at one time and the watch doesn't work after 1 week on my wrist. Went to the watch repair shop, the fellow told me to repair this watch is costlier than getting another replica Rado. So, from that day onwards, if I cannot afford costly watch, then I go for the affordable original one irrespective of the brand.

Well said!I bought a replica once.Just to open it up to see how an automatic movement works.I bought it for less than rm80..if i were to buy a genuine automatic watch it would have cost me at least rm170(cheapest seiko 5 i saw)

some wear g-shock as fashion items, not everyone can afford a rm500 watch, just like back in the 90s, where market is swamped by fake guess and fake armani jeans.
seriously a student earning rm4 per hour doing part-time will take them 1-2 months to buy a G-Shock. a fake one you can get in 1-2 days.
remember that the poor is the 90% of the nation.

the lousiest fake seiko5 is at RM10 only. (pasar pagi eng ann, klang)
rm40 are "heavier" ones i believe.
-
Some low income earners not willing to pay for cheap ori casio but willing to buy RM10 dunhill kretek daily???
-
I bought a fake Tag during my college days from Petaling Street. After a week of use, the crown came off. I think I paid RM50 for that watch and after that incident, I told myself no more buying fakes. Not worth wasting $ for something with no warranty. I rather buy an ori watch that I can afford knowing it will last at least a few years and comes with warranty.

I am not sure, but they had a day-date automatic movement with a display caseback.I ALMOST bought one :Startled:

yes 100% agree :)
They buy cause of the design, look, prices tag which they can afford and also time telling machine .
Some of them dont even bother on the brand (dont even know the brand exit), i respect them cause they main purpose of watch is time telling + . . . .
-
Everyone have to agree that fakes are stealing...
I will not call them 'replicas' cause it will make them sounds legitimate....
-
I'm fine with homage watches but not fakes. Definitely stealing, definitely cheating and worst still it definitely shows how shallow the character of the wearer.
Nothing wrong buying cheaper alternatives but don’t buy one with fake brands as it would put the buyer in the same side as the pirate. Why? The buyer is buying because he wants people to THINK he/she has the original. In my book that’s cheating, plain and simple.
Society is too brand conscious. We should be product conscious.
