Title: Going back
Post by: G.MAC on June 01, 2012, 06:41:30 AM
Topic for the day. Having gone all the way to upgrading your watch, have you guys got any problems downgrading one watch for a few after a while? For example, would you sell a Rolex DSSD for one Omega PO and a BR03-92? What are your thoughts on the matter? Downgrade in this sense is purely from the financial or economical sense and in no way suggesting that those watches are more inferior. I have been looking at upgrading all the time that suddenly this thought crossed my mind so want to get some feedback from the others in the watch sphere as to whether it is smart to downgrade or just to buy the other watches outright?

Sold a Breguet Type XX for a PAM00000. Upgrade or downgrade?

In my prime, up-grading to the Holy Grail is part and parcel of the day. As life goes on and at one time, I feel, I have too many watches that did not have enough wrist time. Some of the holy grails that are sitting in the safe are just as ‘locking assets’.
As time set-in, I begin to look at other priorities in life.  To attain these other priorities, I have begun to ‘unlock’ and liquefied these assets to find more meaning in life. No, not that I have love less interest in watches, it’s just that, I have realised that one or two grail is enough to satisfy my urges in the fine time pieces.
As is, I begin to dispose and ‘downgrade’ to some of the so-called watches that I am comfortable with and each of these watches have had enough wrist time.

Still eyeing for that Breguet. Keep missing out on it. I think it is a straight trade. Yea, DC. I guess I am not at that stage yet so once I am there, I may start liquefying my collection as well. For now I am still chasing after grails.

I would not use the word downgrading though

Consolidating?
Sometimes going back is also going forward at the same time.
Watch is unlike a car or a house where you "downgrade" from a beemer to a perodua, or a semi-d to an apartment.
I guess DC put it in words pretty nicely... Once at a certain age, watch will just be a watch, not that the love with watches is less, just that sometimes with priorities, selling some high complication less worn timepiece to fund for a holiday with family is a better choice.
Once I am 60, I could have sold off all my watches for my kids education if so needed and be wearing a Seiko, I still would not call it downgrading...

As long you are happy with what u have regardless of going "up" or "down". Nothing wrong with it. Sometime less is better.

Dunno abt the age of those who have commented but I realise that as I get older especially the last few years, my priorities have changed substantially.
Over the years until 2009/2010 I had accumulated about 30+ watches but over the last 5 yrs or so, I found that I only wore maybe 4-5 favourites almost all the time on rotation.
The rest were just there because they had been bought for some occassion long ago and was just sitting there after the initial attraction had worn off. I used to think.. ah just leave them there but recently I told myself what's the point. I may as well sell all those off to get somethnig I really really desired even if it was 10 watches to be sold off for only 1. The value whether it is up or down is not the issue.
I seem to think nowadays that I want a less complicated life as in.."less is more"
The more objects you own, the more headache you have such as maintenance, upkeep, servicing, etc  be it  houses, cars, camera systems, watches, sports gear, clothes, etc.. The older we get the more quality time we want to have to ourselves esp if we are still working..
So in order to free up more time I decided to simplify my life by having less headache and thus decided to own ultimately 5-7 watches which I would actually wear on rotation basis. They would be a mix of different complications, formal/casual, colours of dials, shape of cases. Of course the qualities that I look for are still there such as quality of the caliber, finishing, pedigree, etc. My ideal mix would be a Perpetual Calendar, a GMT or Worldtimer, a diver, a chronograph, an alarm and if possible, ultimately a Minute Repeater.... I'm happy with my existing perpetual calendar, GMT, Diver, Chronograph and a formal dinner dress watch
now I just need to sell the rest of my remaining watches and to find my ideal Alarm and Minute Repeater..

is this going backwards or forwards?
from 1 watch to 30+ and back down to 10 currently..but ultimately to be 7

I totally feel this way... from 28 watches to now 11 (aiming for last 1-2 watches then i'll call it the end). My last 1-2 watches have to be carefully thought of and complement my existing collection...kinda concluded i need a RG dress watch, an alarm or a diver watch. And yes overhaul of watches is a killer (i've just sent in 2 recently..i could buy an omega PO with it)

Thanks to you guys for the kind words.

I think simplicity is the word to use. True to that, I now have an exp 1 and iwc to rotate by. Yes, just that. You be surprised, if I am wearing a poljot at the moment.

Looking forward to another holiday these days.

Hahaha it is not the minute repeater as what you think it is. The Breitling Aerospace has a digital minute repeater, alarm, stopwatch or chronograph, dual time and calendar. I will post a photo soon.

Hi Bro. Give me 5.

I have the exact same thought like yours.

All my babies have been through all my different stages in life...snookering in Pulau Ledand water with wife, swimming with spot -fin shark, saying hello to NZ bottle-nose dolphin, holding Milford Sound waterfall water and drank it, shooting the first wild boar in plantation, holding my new born kids in my arms, bombarding my Austrian colleague in boardroom, drinking beer at Shanghai bunk, relaxing morning breeze in Dornbirn....

there is no way that I could part with my watches, they have shared and captured those memories together with me.
