Hi, just want to know what to look out for from ebay purchases and paying through PayPal.
Anyone with input and experience would be fully appreciated.
Thanks in advance

With paypal i think quite safe as you can make a claim and usually result in favor of buyer.
With Ebay even if 100% positive feedback. "shit happens" sometimes.
-
just remember don't buy any service, e-product, program or any intangible item, that not cover by paypal ....
-
Good topic to start.... 'cos I was just starting to browse around eBay ;D
Thanks, Terrence.
By the way, anybody got any comments about the insurance offered? Either by eBay or Paypal.
Take care, Ciao!

insurance, Paypal, reversing payments, ebay protection ...... all means nothing in the end.
i have had many good experiences but stopped after 2 bad transactions and that was many, many years ago.
1. bought an electronic item for USD700. paid and never received item. tried to contact seller but never responded. filed a claim and ebay only refunded the maximum USD200 as per their "fine print".
2. bought a used laptop. item arrived with a damaged screen. seller blamed shipping and asked me to claim from them. packaging was really lousy and i couldn't see how it would have survived anyway. but it did not look like it was damaged by shipping and the damage looked old. decided to forget about filing a claim because it wasn't worth the time and hassle.
to be fair, ebay protection may have improved, but my simple advice on ebay is this " don't spend any money there which you cannot afford to lose "

Bryan, from my experience in buying from Ebay, insurance is normally offered by the seller and it is to protect the seller not the buyer. Ebay buyer would be protected by the Buyer Protection programme as long as the item purchased is covered by this programme. Things could go wrong during delivery i.e item got lost in transit and never turn up or you received item not as described e.g you ordered a blue shirt but received a red one etc. In these instances, the buyer needs to file a claim via either Ebay or Paypal. Make sure you read all the Terms and Conditions when you signed up an Ebay account.

Buy the seller, not just the item.
I avoid sellers from HK, China and any African countries.
When communication process, be frank and honest so that when shit hits the fence, both parties are crystal clear...no doubts.
When you have doubts, there is no doubt...... That you need to abort sale.

Sorry to heard about your experience.
I didn't know that eBay only covers USD200 - so buying anything over that amount is a big risk :-\
Awee> Thanks for the info.

"buy the Seller" is a mantra that is often heard.
Problem is we don't get to interact much with the Seller on ebay.
So, is going for those with "Trusted" labels the only way to go? ???

Bryan... We need to look at the followings:
1. Generally what he sell, If all clothes and suddenly a Submariner...then you may wanna probe more
2. How long he has been a seller...not just a member
3. Number of feedbacks...pay more attention on negative and how he handle those
4. Write to seller to ask about his willingness to send to malaysia, S&H cost, type of shipping mode, etc. Can see how reasonable he is...
5. Ask for more current photo of item
If have doubts, don't bid..

Thanks for all the comments.
Take care, ciao!

Prices are tempting for goods sold at ebay, if the goods sent is insured , only the seller can claim the money cause he send n insured the goods. So you are again at the mercy of the seller on weather to return you the claimed money. Many goods send are lost in transit.

yeah... Rule of thumb pay using paypal... Another one, if the deal looks too good to be true then there must be something 'going on'
-
Always used paypal. less hassle as well.

Bought alot thru Ebay via paypall so far so good.. but the advice of not spending money you cant afford to loose is good
-
I bought a Edox chronorally, happy with it. Get from a trusted seller....
-
with ratings over 1000+ and 100% positive feedback, that is a good indicator

Also depend how desperate you are, recently I bought a pair of Alden shell, the seller is really slow.3 negative feedback, I was concern but his price is half of retail and Alden is hard to get to ship out of US.
He took a week to pack and ship. After we have agree on price. Really idiot.
Whereby I bought a pair of c&j from styleforum. The guy was arrogant in writing but his description is clear indicating he is a season seller, he ship out the next day I PayPal him.
