i found we got alot of mwf members only talk about few brands... mostly are mid to luxury brand... (Rm15k n above)
be reality, this may make some members shy to post some affordable watches.... which can be good, interesting to discuss.....
on the other hand, we have not attracted enough superdupper big time collector to talk about vintage collectible, super luxury, complicated, independent watch maker..... watches!
then i found ebay listed top ten brands at bay.... so i was thinking to survey.... which are the preferred brand in mwf...
but i added another 5 brands which i think are hot in MWF from 11 - 15.....
i wish every member take part... this may also help our BOSS to think of how to further categorize the forum!
then we go to the category of watches to talk about our more specific interest!
-
yen, that's really hard :Praying: can i choose more than one :Laughing_on_floor:

For Lady..... I have to go with Cartier.... hmm.....elegant, classy, unique( own style), superior quality in term of material. Thats just my personal opinion.
I guess all brand listed has its own buyer . So really... at the end of the day, the watch you choose is what you like and its very personal to each individual. :)

There is no other brand that I like so many watches in its range than IWC ;D

There is no other brand that I like so many watches in its range than IWC ;D
Me too....IWC have so many nice watches. Just gotta have them all.
BTW, I saw the new 500114 in flesh today. The watch rocks.
-
It seems like a number of top tier watchmakers are excluded here. What about PP, AP, VC, Alain Siberstein, Blancpain, Piaget, Franck Muller, Jaeger LeCoultre (JLC), Jaquet Droz, Glashutte, Ulysse Nardin, etc?
Personally, my "affordable" prefer brands are: JLC, Glashutte, Ulysse Nardin, IWC, Alain Silberstein, Blancpain, Panerai
The brands that I am dreaming to get are: PP, AP or VC

Those brands you mentioned are catagorized as luxury watches. The poll takes into account of low to luxury range which i think would be able to survey the overall interest of mwf members.
-
But it is kind of strange the poll includes only IWC and Panerai (which are tier 1 luxury makers) but not others. This is like asking which is one's preferred cars: BMW, Merc and other Toyotas and Protons.
-
sometimes life just happen this way, we can't have all the options/choices made available to us and we can only choose in the limited way ;)
Chris created this post maybe thinking those brands are more "down to earth" and popular and commonly discuss in our forum ;) Of course, one can always mention your own prefer brand other then the option above ;)
Maybe can start another post which include all the luxury brands, but then again, i'm sure we will missed some (or a lot too) since out there just too many brands to follow :D
My friend, just vote what's there and mentioned if your preference is not in the list ;) Is good we can learn from each other ;)
 & enjoy!

Panerai is tier 1? :Startled: ;)
-
Panerai and Rolex are probably controversial to categorize. I just don't want to offend the owners of the watches. Personally, I can think of many other brands that are better or more exclusive in design but both of the above have very strong demand that keep their prices up.
-
i did mention in my first post...
i saw the top ten brand traded in ebay... so i posted the 10 + 5 which i think is hot discussed in mwf...
it dont mean i only see these brands...
yes there are many other good brand out there...
we can never post all.... brand created everyday....
why ebay top ten traded is different from mwf choice? because those are the popular among normal ppl...
not watch addicted guys like us
so we got the answer in the end... MWF is more towards mid price range and popular globally brand !
ROLEX, PANERAI, IWC
and u know what?.......... these 3 brands also has the highest secondary market value.... is this tell us something?
but i'm surprise that sinn doesnt get any vote... probably because of its past few yrs strategy moving to up price?
and i also surprise that seiko who deserve more votes wasnt getting more votes!
a true manufacturer who sell quartz, mechanical, kinetic, spring drive, solar... movement watches from below rm100 to rm100 k above....
i believe alot of us started watch collection after we bought our first mechanical watch who has a brand call is SEIKO.... SEIKO 5
i'm certainly one of those !
i wish our moderator can get something from the poll and re categorize the forum.... maybe with follow sections
1. Rolex
2. Panerai
3. IWC
4 japanese
5. German
6. other swiss
7. affordable ( below rm4k )
-

since when is Panerai or Rolex ever "exclusive" ?
-
Thats my point. :)
Rolex produces close to 1 mil units per year!
-
correct me if i am wrong..
the whole point of this poll is to gauge the response of the more "affordable brands" that everyone can have the opportunity to touch, feel, exam and etc... because it's relatively common and "affordable" to own or have an acquaintance who owns the brand.
you can say that it's pretty common to spot one on the wrist on someone ....say one in every 20-50 person on the street.
by this...you can get a pretty honest review or opinion of a brand because you've have first hand handling the watches.
it's like a car poll... ranging from a proton to.........say mercedes. it's no point putting in a range from proton to buggati veyron or lambo
i am sure most of us have or had a chance to drive a proton to a mercedes...but how many of us ever sat in a lambo or buggati? or even a porche?
that's all my 2 sen.
exclusivity is all in the mind. hey my friend managed to find a vintage Pagol in the thieves market.....to me it's exclusive.. how many of those are still around?
cheers

Panerai is tier 1? :Startled: ;)
As to my knowledge, to be tier 1, every single component has to be manufactured in-house (ie. springs, etc). Not many brands have the capability to do so; JLC is one. Definately not PAM.

I fail to understand the reasoning behind your argument. Firstly, being exclusive means that the watch is either rare or extremely expensive. A brand is never exclusive. A brand will probably not survive long if it is only offered exclusively to selected few. Furthermore, design is a matter of personal preference. Just to illustrate my point about exclusivity of a watch, a PAM 127 and a Rolex Daytona Paul Newman are both rare and expensive. PAM and Rolex have strong following and that's why the high pricing in the primary and secondary market. It's simple economics...demand outweighs supply. A no-brainer situation.
I think you are missing the point of this discussion. It's about affordable brands. Brands such as Lange, PP and VC are usually too expensive for most of us humble folks here.

That's what make watch collection interesting. Personally, I think the definition of "everything must be in house is a must for tier 1 watch maker" is not really practical in this age. Some ETA movements are still great movements. When I look at mechanical watch, it is the artistic or jewelry value that matter most.
Yes, when we talk about brands, we are generalizing here. Even Tag makes some really "exclusive", expensive and complicated watches but would I consider them tier 1? No. Alain Siberstein uses "normal" ETA movements for their basic models but would I consider it tier 1. Yes. However, whether tier1 or otherwise, everyone has their own list and I think it is hard to find consensus by just considering the brand as each brand may have large variations within itself.
I thought I saw a PP posted just yesterday? :)
-
Perhaps you can create a new poll on luxury or super luxury range. We are happy to take part ;)
-
Please read the title of the post " MWF Prefered brand".......... I guess PP, VC, Bregeut and a Lange is simply not everyone cup of tea. Many may feel its too expensive to own one. I am sure all of us here would love to have what you listed but I guess those brands are far too exclusive.
Yes ,I think Fred is right. Start a new poll.... " Luxury Watches" anything.... :)
-
What is 1 tier....2 tier.....3 tier.....4 tuer.....  got see before or not I no see before woh..... :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:
Thus one tier 1 la...... :Laughing_on_floor:

many of us are at different points in the journey of watch collecting (most of us are watch sluts owning timepieces of many different brands while some of us only go for certain movements, price range, aesthetics, and other considerations). Affordability, again, also changes over time for individuals. Tier 1,2,3 or 4 is again subjective but there used to be a thread at TZ about such classification (long time back)..taking into consideration history, movements, complications and etc..i'm sure the lines are blurred now with the emergence of independents.
if the thread is for mods to categorize the classification, i would suggest looking at it from pure "movement" or "origins" perspective. We can classify them like German makes (sinn, lange, stowa), italian makes (pam, anonimo, mazzuoli) , swiss makes (too many), japan/asia makes (seagull, seiko)? further sub-divide them into pilot, diver, casual and dress?
just my suggestion...
-
Wow...Now I know our MWF bros like what watch brands.
1st is Rolex
2nd is IWC
3rd is Panerai
-
If I got the chance to cast my vote, my choice would be:
1. Seiko
2. Rolex
3. JLC
-
Actually, what written by chrisyen back in 2009 still valid today.
Not to complaint but some of the watch enthusiasts I know deem MWF is too "upclass" and the brands frequently discuss here mostly out of their reach. I'm not sure if the forum have enough traffic or not. But some of the fella actually prefer lowyat forum or UGWC instead. Which is a shame really cause we can't even unite all Malaysia Watch lover.

I love watches. I buy them for their functionality and how they attractive wear on my wrist, then the choices of brands follow according to these functional requirements. Due to the various activity pursuits, I ended up collecting more than I would want to acquire in my trying to practice minimal living.
Since we are talking about preferred brands, I list them accordingly based on those that I have owned:
1) Tag Heuer
2) Tissot
3) Omega
Other specialised brands which I have used for sports. Not sure if members here find it worth discussing them in the forum since I haven't seen them being discussed:
1) Rip Curl
2) Garmin
3) Fitbit (okay that's not a real watch, more of a fitness function gadget)

I wore IWC and panerai watches several times but too bad that I still cannot click with them.
Only Rolex current caught my eyes and I bought few of them
