Erm... because it's my money?
Same case with cars... any and every car almost is the same... get's you from point A to point B.
Why spend so much on beemer or merc?
"Erm... because it's my money" would be the polite answer...
If not, they will say "I can afford ah!! Why you care? Loan from you ar? Mind your own business!!" ;D

hi david,
I was never in such a position but if I were asked by my other half, I'd say that women have their shoes, handbags,(for some women they must be matching...), jewelry (which include necklace, ear-ring, ring, angklets, bangles...anywhere they hang something on) , designer clothes (from skirts to pants to sunday dresses to evening gowns....), LV or Prada i-phone covers....(feel free to add on)
What do men have??..our clothes have almost no variety in design...they are mostly bought off the rack, even bespoke tailors have limited choice of materials/designs..
Most of us don't carry handbags..some ppl still carry clutch bags but that's another thing..
Most men have only 1 or 2 pairs of working shoes, 1 pair of casual weekend loafers, 1 pair of sandals and if they are into sports, 1 pair of gym/running shoes..we don't color match our shoes to our clothes.
Most men don't wear jewelry, most men do not accessorise almost everything they own..
So we only have 1 thing that gives us some pleasure....our watches...
sure we also have our cars but women nowadays have them too..
Besides you can't carry your car with you everywhere you go.
Even if you talk abt cameras, women are into it as well nowadays...
Finally I'd say that as long as I have provided my share of my financial responsibility, what I do with my extra money is my business as long as its not into anything harmful or damaging to a relationship like womanising, gambling, drugs...she should be so lucky...

my rule of thumb when it comes to $$$ spent on hobbies:
1. family is taken care of. (missus mainly ... )
2. financial commitments are taken care of. (investments, savings, repayments ...)
3. also, it must be part of the dispensable income.

I would say "I buy expensive watch to celebrate...
Option 1: quitting smoking"
Option 2: my promotion"
Option 3: quitting drinking"
Option 4: quitting womanizing"
Option 5: quitting partying"
Option 6: my salary increament"
Option 7: my new child"
Option 8: life"
plus other options.....
