Title: Seiko automatic divers.... my road to MM 300
Post by: chrisyen on October 08, 2009, 04:51:24 PM
i'm just like alot of watch men in the world.... we all like divers because its tough, big, good lume, got bezel....
we all like seiko! why? seiko make watches affordable !
we all like rolex.... but rolex price is beyond reach by alot of ppl affordability.
so alot of ppl like rolex sub... but end up buying seiko divers because $$$....

just look at automatic seiko divers alone...
seiko hv so many design of the cheaper seiko 5 without screw in crown 100m ... all kind of dial color, bezel... pvd...

it cost u rm300+++ onwards..... with see through caseback showing seiko 7s26 workhorse movement
(http://www.roachman.com/seiko/automatic/SNK031.jpg)

then u hv the better 200m divers... legendary design... with screw in crown... classic colors of dial, bezel, bracelet / rubber
available around rm500++ onwards.... no see through caseback... still with the non hack 7s26 movement
(http://www.roachman.com/seiko/diver/SKX007K4.jpg)

from rm600++ onwards.... seiko has come up with some famous unique design that attracted so many fans over the yrs
1. monster
once the best lume watch... his LE version is still a collector wish list!

2. landmaster.... one of the biggest watch during his time...

3. new monsters
seiko been releasing new monster for the past few yrs
(http://www.roachman.com/seiko/diver/SKZ247.jpg)

4. newer line
(http://www.roachman.com/seiko/diver/SRP043.jpg)

1000 onwards..... the seiko prospex line... sadly over distributor never brought this into malaysia
samurai... st steel n titanium... fitted with better 7s25... also attracted some fans around the world
(http://www.roachman.com/seiko/diver/SNM0011.jpg)

tuna... oops... most tuna is quartz... for the actual professional!

back to auto.... after release of 6r15 movement... seiko release the SUMO
around rm1.5k... with the hacking and windable new movement....

monster alike 6r15.... in trend with the pvd case contrast with striking yellow indexes and hands
(http://www.higuchi-inc.com/SARB049.jpg)

SO..... me, just like the rest... above seiko divers are all affordable... its not a dream watch.....
what is the ultimate dream watch of seiko divers we/i been dreaming over the yrs?

the beautiful Grand Seiko diver with spring drive movement?
no... too expensive... not a big fan of spring drive... mights well get a rolex sub/sd/ds?

the historical marine master 1000m?
i like it... but its cant wear it everyday... TOO BIG.... cant match my working shirt ! and its not cheap!

SO MY CHOICE........ THE SEIKO MARINE MASTER 300M
(http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o210/yenfoolun/seiko%20marine%20master%20sbdx001/DSC_0053.jpg)

after yrs of study, i told myself i want 1 of this... but it is not cheap after all when u compare it with the swiss and german made divers fitted with eta2824!

but yesterday, when my fren shown me this like new condition MM at used watch price ! i cant resist!

I think all the sifu know this watch.... Seiko Prospex Marine Master 300m SBDX001.. to be exact!
so many write up, review, comparison... on the web.... so i just want to talk about some 1st hand feeling

combination of brush and polish 42mm case. only 1 word can describe BEAUTIFUL !

its monobloc case is a classical design....
i wasnt that fancy with this.... with the new technology we can easily build a 1000m water resistant divers watch...
mono bloc design doesnt require... it is difficult to service.....

the 8L35 so call GS base movement is worth paying for.... should be as accurate as COSC watch!
date, windable, hacking....

the finishing on hands, indexes on dial.... ITS THE MOST POISONOUS PARTS... my eyes just cant get away focusing on it!

the diver bezel is shining! was not the cheap normal aluminum insert... but it will be perfect to upgrade to ceramic or something scratch resistant !

i do not understand why seiko never use sapphire crystal since its scratch resistant....
especially at this price, i prefer to have a scratch resistant sapphire with good AR coating!

the thickness is just nice... not so thick till not easy to wear... too thin is not good looking either!

the bracelet is well polished, solid end links, not so thick double lock folding clasp... but no screw link...
i prefer screw type links.. where every1 can adjust the link with just 1 screw driver!
but it is very good looking overall...

the adjustable clasp is really useful... but it is not as solid as rolex DS clasp to me! but it is a brilliant design!
it came out before rolex ds design!

packaging is so so.... compare to swiss branded watch...
no wooden box, no leather.... seiko should provide a better watch box for this price range!

the famous design rubber strap together with the package is long... alot of ppl like it... but not me!
1. its hard... not comfort... probably for u to wear on rubber dive suit! it may grip well!
2. its not wide enough to match the watch... black look even smaller...

the lume.... no need to say... every1 know seiko trademark lumibrite is one of the best in town!
the thick and huge amount of compound applied on this .... resulted it glow when u bring it to little dim area!
i must say i like good lume watch...
this is best!

SO FAR i should say i like it.... because it look good!

scott.... i would like to put it side by side with your DS as well!

list price is around 250,000 yen.... around RM9,650 now... but TS never bring in seiko prospex!
saw it once in a watch shop in KLCC.... the shop bring direct from jpn! price tag is RM9,999

This is a discontinue model... maybe still can get brand new from some online store ;)

My only concern is the servicing...i doubt the local SEIKO can handle this piece :p I hope i'm wrong :)

Cheers!

WOW...the price so high...  :o

anyway, right after I see the photos of this Seiko Marinemaster SBDX001, it does share similarities with ORIENT Professional Diver "ORIENT STAR" WZ0251FD, except the Power Reserve, Crown protection and Back Case.

monoblock not easy to open! u need to open from front! but it can be open!
malaysia seiko wont service this definately...
but if no part need replacement, just purely servicing, then u dont need to send it back...

yes the orient star 300m diver is another great divers watch...
but it is huge... 45mm if not mistaken... u need to compare it with deep sea... i saw that in central market...
it is price lower than the MM... so its around the swiss made price!

Chris,

When u mention Grand Seiko uses the same base calibre i.e. 8L series, I suppose those are old GS, right? I believe the current GS models are using 9S series.

Yup. Met up / yam cha with Chris yesterday. Shown to me his Seiko in real life. Really, it was a stunning piece.
I like esp. the bezel, it as smooth and shining as ceramic with very good finishing

Congrats to acquire a beautiful Seiko.

as i know 8L is base movement of 9s series .... 9s finishing at higher level...
Title: opinion after a week of wear....
Post by: chrisyen on October 21, 2009, 03:43:02 PM
after a week of wearing....
i like it very much.... the overall design and finishing is good.... just good looking...

size is just not too big and not too small...
u can feel the weight  but its not difficult to wear....

the dial and hands..... i just can stop looking at it....
and it match well with my working attire...

1 of my colleague who like watches asked why i wear just a seiko?
so i shown it my seiko...
he took bout a min to flip the watch 360 degree.... keep looking....
i asked him whether he like it?he said yes... overall look impressive.... very good looking even from far he saw just another rolex sub design watch...
he asked where to get this? i told him japan only ...
he said no wonder he never see any shop selling.... then he asked how much?
i told him retail is rm10k.... he jump!  :o

 :Laughing_on_floor:

so i asked him he want?
he.......... said to pay 10k for seiko he need to think twice....

yesterday after he study some web review... he asked me about grand seiko kind of stuff.....
he said now he know seiko got different range....

BUT u know what? i knew he like the watch....

Sorry to bump this topic up, but it is really beautiful looking at this as it is classic like Sub ND (that for me)and i find me gazing at this for quite alot of time. Not to mention it is more "practical" for daily uses, well we buy watch to wear not to keep in somewhere.

I just really curious that if i ever will be able to fit the bracelet as the last removable link is usually smallest setting for my wrist  ::) ::) :'(

Value for money, Seikos are the best, durable, especially the Samurai Ti, I have Rolex Submariner and GMT'S. and also previously own Swiss divers, Bell & Ross, Oris, Brietlings, it's not the money. The Samurai Ti is still the best, value for money. Very super light weight. I have a orange and NOS black
