Lost a fair amount of moolah. What to do? To not lose money at all, the watch has to be kept for a certain length of time but flipping is more often than not within a few months or weeks from the purchase. Process is made worse if we happen to buy the 'less desirable' or less popular variant or model and want to flip.

Most of these reflects on the market demands also. If the particular watch is in demand, then may not loose much. Also, most watches increase in price annually 6-13%,so if you have it for a long time and the particular watch is still selling, than chances are you don't have to loose much. But being buyers, they will value according to the year you bought and squeeze you from there.  :mooning:

Well,at the end of it,its 'Willing Seller, Willing Buyer' ...

Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win...

In the early days, I am at the losing end and as I go along the way..with foresight and experiences and have managed be on the positive end.

Nowadays, I have slowed down on watch flipping and concentrate only on what I wanted to wear and keep..

Maybe the next poll is 'How long do you keep your watches before flipping?'

Like David said, sometimes you lose, sometime you make. Strangely I have not lost any money flipping my Casio G-Shocks. As for the rest of the watches, some I traded and some I sold outright. Those that I trade, so far I lost about RM1K (that is like in 20 watches), but you need to negotiate with the seller that he cannot sell you at the selling price as he will make from your watches as well. So at the end win win for both sides.

However, you tend to take a big hit on lesser known brands. For those brand, better to sell outright.

too many watches, is kinda headache,
for me, just keep the 4 types for different occasion or event will do. not need much.
1 for formal wear, 1 for casual wear/ parties, 1 for sport, 1 for travel, rough , tough event.

if there is more extra, maybe can sell off, or keep it in the drawer some where else, as a hide and seek for your grandchild.

i believe if they found it they more appreciate it, is better then we give them, they wont appreciate, heheh

depends on how long u keep ur watch. if long enuf and the new watch keep increasing, u wont make lost but also wont hav profit. Another reason is u must stand firm on ur price and not desparate to let go. if not sure lost alot

But as long as those ppl that buy from me had a good deal... it's all good.

Thanks Bro, that mean I am one of the beneficial  ;D

But I was surprisingly to see the survey shown people made lost more than 10k categories rank nombor 1. If so, why some of the members still flipping with such a huge lost?? Shouldn't be just keeping for collections, just wonder

I flip not because I want to get a profit but instead to get some cash to fund other watches, so as long as the losses is not that big, I am willing to flip

At 1st I thought about flipping and losing money and maybe it is better to keep as collection.
But in the end, better let someone enjoy it at a better price and get it over with.
You only have 2 wrists and can only wear 1 watch at a time... even at rotation, there is only so many you can wear...

Not yet... but currently on a one in one out policy...
If a new watch comes in, one old one have to go...
And, one thing about this policy is, the "out" doesn't have to mean sell... can be just giving it to my dad, wife etc... hehehe

Unless give it away to relatives or friends or when desperate for funds for other issues.

My wife asked the same question when I flipped, I told her cause u limit my collections ma, otherwise, I would keep all of them, just like I only love you for life, then she said, if don't limit, you will keep adding more girlfriends, that is even worse, then I  :HammerHead: :HammerHead:

I was once told by Mrs.Yee,(Hing's watch) men does not usually spend on jewellery like earings, gold, diamond, hangbags, clothes, shoes etc...like the ladies. So instead, have a nice watch to reward yourself after some hard work especially when you meet business associated or go visit your 'future-mother-in-law' or GF..at least you have something to show.

watches should never be treated mainly as an investment. Once you've decided that you're willing to spend that amount of money on an iwc/rolex etc, the mindset of retaining a 'solid' investment is wildly incorrect. You should be happy to spend that kind of money because you appreciate the trait and the skill that goes behind what you wear on your wrist. Sure some watches retains very good value like a patek or rolex but again it's the trait you're paying for not the 'return'.

Personally have not lost money yet.

You can make money if you buy at the right price but it is very hard to do.

It is very important to buy at the right price. Also need to consider the demand.

Also to be ahead you can't be paying retail and when you flip to profit mostly you have to do private sale.

I consider the loss as a 'rental fee' that I pay to wear the watch..so that I won't feel so bad

if you buy a watch for rm30,000 rolex
wear it for 5 years

sold it at rm25,000

are you loosing rm5,000 ?

or you spent RM5,000 to wear a rolex watch for 5 years?
in this 5 years, you get to feel a good watch, you get praised, recognised....

so thats not a loss.

As some of you may know, i was going to buy a JLC but couldnt find one and bought a Rolex. Now a JLC that I like has popped up and now will be the time to sell my watch. But will I lose money flipping the watch? If I do, then I'll just hold on to the watch and be happy. Taking out the emotion helps you save money while flipping. Don't be too eager or desperate. Viewing the watch as an investment only helps you save money when flipping.

A sound advice I got from an investment person: you can be a collector or a dealer, but you can't be both.

There's pros and cons.  Pre-own shop = virtually immediate sale + security is better but cheaper sale price.  Private sale = maybe higher sale price but less security dealing with unknown person and dealing in the open and also all the trouble to meet up but buyer change his mind.

If wanna keep for minimal loss / break even / profit i think one usually need to aim for their classic model and rolex is always the best / easiest to pre owned market like Sub / GMT / YM etc.

I am also planning to sell my watches to fund another watch. But deep down really don't want to let go any one of it. 8 watches does not have enough time on my wrist. If selling, sure will loss significant amount. Dunno what to do now haha

I think people should understand that watches in general are BAD INVESTMENTS. Yeah you could probably earn a buck or two, but even then it won't be as simple as you think. If you have holding power, that would make it easier to do so. But say you buy a nice watch, and then you decide you want to sell it for another nice watch. In the desperation to get the watch that you want (cause someone else might buy it) you might end up selling below market. Not good.

Have holding power. If I don't have the means to buy the next watch without selling my current watch, I won't buy the next watch. Don't sell in desperation.

been keeping them for more than 3 years, i wouldnt said LOST. however most of them appreciate. just the matter of high/low. if i do sell them im sure definitely make some bucks of it.
