Since everyone here is into watches and the disposable income to purchase watches is not easy to come by...
You can always do this 6 times a week (different dish of course), and in a year, you could have saved enough for at least a decent mechanical watches....
What I am talking about is to cook the family's dinner instead of eating out...
Felt like cooking so I bought all the ingredients needed to cook lasagna...
Whipped up the Bolognese Sauce last night.
Today after going home from work... continue to prepare the 2nd half of the dish.
Boiling the lasagna...
Dropped the lasagna in boiling water with a little salt and olive oil...
Cook it for exactly 6 minutes and then rinse it with cold water to stop the cooking process...
This is to keep the pasta 30% uncooked and finished in the oven so that the pasta will retain it's "Al Dente" ;D
(http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/hanz079/Home%20Made%20Lasagna%20Oct%2012th/DSC02216.jpg)
First layers of the lasagna laid on an oiled Baking Tray.
Trays that are 3 inches tall are just nice.
Then a generous dollop of the bolognese sauce.
Spread it evenly.
Then drop in chunks of mozzarella cheese.
Then another layer of lasagna.
Then more sauce and cheese.
Then yet another layer of lasagna.
Then sauce and no cheese... gotta save for the final layer... thrifty my friends... thrifty...
I always keep the broken ones for the last layer as it will be topped with the sauce and cheese.
Preheating the oven at 180 degrees Celsius.
Bake it for 30 minutes...
Spend a couple of seconds to oogle at my timepiece while waiting for the oven to get hot enough. ::)
Just in.
After 10 minutes.
Cheese started melting... a waft of aroma is filling the house... smell of cheese and tomatoes...
After 20 minutes.
Smell getting more intense and tummy getting hungrier...
Done!!!
Voila....
Damn!!
With no proper utensils to cut and serve the lasagne, when I cut in using the spatula and lift it... the whole thing collapsed...
Well, at least it tastes good!!!
I know I know... it looks like a pile of ****.... hey... at least I tried... ;D
I am gonna invest in some kitchen utensils and maybe a single serve oblong bowl for doing lasagna single portion each time....
And not 4 portions all at once...
And for those wondering why there aren't any veggies or bechamel sauce... it's because my kids dun like em... they love my Bolognese sauce though...
Total Damage.
Lasagna - rm4.90
Minced Beef - rm9.50
Tomato Sauce - rm10.50
Mozzarella Cheese - rm24.90
Aromatics, Spices and Herbs - rm12.00
Total is rm61.80
And I am left with half uncooked Lasagna still in the package, half a pot of Bolognese sauce left, 65% of the Mozzarella still in the package, and plenty of herbs and spices for me to cook twice more.
Not bad at all... :Dancing_banana:
Maybe I will try baking a butter cake one of these days.... :mooning:
-
I second to that, bro
Now I know why you have so many timepieces .......... to rotate different one to time the cooking of different dishes everyday :Laughing_on_floor:
Btw, very professionally done, & looks delicious. Hmmm, I love the taste of a lasagne. Can we have a gtg at KK?
Aiseh man... since you mentioned it... I should have worn my Zenith EP so that I can time the cooking of the pasta and baking of the Lasagna to one tenth of a second!!! hahahaha :Laughing_on_floor:
If got gtg in KK ar... YB, you just tell me what you want... apa pun boleh... if I dunno how to make... I go learn!!! ;D
-
Emmmmm..... I have the same oven.
Food looks good as well.

rm61.50 a meal = saving money for watches
-
My lunch meals cost me max rm4.
For rm61.50 can feed me lunch for 15 days. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
rm61.50 a meal = saving money for watches
61.50 for 3 dinners... I think I overcooked for last night...
If I do single portions each x 4... I reckon the ingredients is good enough for 12 persons.
So that's like rm5.20 per person... not bad for a lasagna dinner I would think.
My lunch meals cost me max rm4.
For rm61.50 can feed me lunch for 15 days. :Laughing_on_floor:
rm4 for lunch? Sure boh bro? I eat 2 roti kosong with dhal and curry already rm2.40... Milo Ping and rm2.20... oso more than rm4 liao...
But I go one step higher than you coz I SKIP lunch entirely!!! nyahahahah
-
Haha....rm4 just for the mixed rice and i take the free soup.
Dont order drinks. Come back office drink plain water.
-
Nice!!!
Next GTG can you come? Cook us some western food ;)
-
And although I have the same oven as you, I doubt I can compare with your culinary skills... lol
hanz079,
Don't say thatlah. I am retired, so nothing else to do but cook.

Haha....rm4 just for the mixed rice and i take the free soup.

But still... rm4 for "chap farn" still good price... with free soup sumore...
In KK, "chap farn" minimum already rm4.50 and that is hard to find.
BUT... if I drive 1 hour 30 minutes to Kota Belud... I can have a bowl of steamed chicken drumstick noodles for rm2.50.... now that's a steal... ;D
Nice!!!
Next GTG can you come? Cook us some western food ;)
I always see the postings on GTG and how I wish I could join one day...
And if I do get to join... sure I can cook something... I used to sell western food around 7 years ago... Shamtv2555 is my sundries supplier that time... lol
And although I have the same oven as you, I doubt I can compare with your culinary skills... lol
hanz079,

That's what I plan on doing if I get to retire at all...

I knew one chap uses his chrono to time boiling egg. Maybe you can make history by using the Zenith EP to time how long for the cheese top on pizza to cook :Laughing_on_floor:
Btw, not much wrist time you allocate to the Zenith leh?
If your Right Honourable are in KL for gtg, ........... eventhough I am not that keen into cooking now, but, wont mind buy you a round of dinner & drink
I only wear the Zenith on the evenings... as a matter of fact, last weekend I was wearing it on a nice evening with my wife in the Sutera Harbour Marina...
And thanks for your offer YB...

Wow... can save 30k in 1 year plus? Sounds good... I better make sure I have enough unique recipes to rotate.... if not, I will eat, sleep and dream Lasagna... which is not good... hahaha
-
A good tips to save my money to buy the next grail, Hanz.
But must rotate the dishes as eating the same dish daily will make one go crazy or fed up with the food.

Yes... and to save 30k for a grail watch might take only a mere 9 months!!! ;D

Do you guys have your math wrong?
Seems that you only calculating the cost of the food?
So how much do you actually save by spending that amount?
We know the pasta and such cost rm61.50, but eating like that saves you how much exactly?

The way it should be calculated is the amount spent eating out - the amount spent eating at home = savings.
Lets take me as an example.
Eat outside for 2 adults and 2 children.
I have calculated an average of rm70-90 spent for each meal.
If i were to cook lasagna, it actually costs only rm30 per meal as i still can cook another meal out of the ingredients left.
That's a savings of rm40-60 per meal per day.
Which come to roughly rm14k a year.
Eating chinese style with a fish, vegetable and soup also costs around rm25-35 per meal.
Bottom line is, eating at home can save u money...
-
Beside calculating the visible expenses, one need to account for other invisible & accidental expenses leh ;)
Yes... thanks for reminding me...
Stuff like parking, petrol and "dear, the dress/bag/scarf/skirt/blouse looks nice..."... BAM!! another rm150 down the drain...
"Pa, the lego/psp/nds got new game..."...BAM!! another rm150 down the drain...
At home? Watch the damn TV!! hahaha
-
As a serious watch is screaming my name using a loudspeaker.... the need to save arise today...
Today I am making Roast Chicken 101... meaning Roast Chicken for dummies la... :Laughing_on_floor:
The ingredients.
A whole chicken.
Carrots, celery and onions for the "mirepoix"
Garlic.
Corn kernels.
Bacon.
Mushrooms.
Lemon.
Potatoes.
Roughly cut into chunks the mirepoix ingredients and lay it down in a roasting tray.
Peel the garlic and throw it in whole.
Throw in the mushrooms.
Half the potatoes and put in in the tray as well.
Clean the bird, season with salt and pepper.
Poke holes in the lemon with a knife and stuff it in the cavity.
Place the bird on top of the mirepoix.
Lay down strips of streaky bacon on top of the bird.
Reason? I am lazy to baste the chicken every 20 minutes to keep it moist.
So, with the strips of bacon there, the natural lard that will drip from the bacon will baste the chicken for me...
And you will end up with strips of crispy bacon to go with the roasted potatoes as well.
Preheating the oven to 240 degrees Celsius.
When the oven is heated to the right temperature, chuck in the whole tray and lower the temperature to 200 degrees Celsius. Roast for 80 minutes...
This is where I go watch TV and just let the oven do the work...
After 40 minutes... the house smelled like roast chicken...
Bacon is getting crispy and secreting lard to moist the chicken...
Bed of veggies getting browned.
Done!!
Separate the potatoes and bacon in one plate and the chicken in another.
Remove the lemon.
Time to cook the sauce.
With all the stuff that's left in the tray, just put the tray on top of direct heat and scrape off the good stuff that's on the bottom of the tray.
Move all the veg to a corner.
Add a tablespoon of plain flour into the liquid and once the flour gets into contact with the oil, it will create a "roux" which is a thickening agent for sauces.
Add 2 cups of water and keep stirring.
Then use a sift and transfer the liquid to a smaller pot while separating the veg....
Season to taste....
While the sauce is simmering and the corn kernels steaming.
The chicken is rested enough.
Cut the drumstick and wing using a knife.
Use a thong to tear out the rest of the meat from the chicken.
If it cooks just right, the meat will just fall when you apply pressure...
Easy job.
Throw the carcass and keep the meat... DUH!!
All done!!!
Meat is all there.
Potatoes and crispy bacon.
Steamed corn kernel.
Chicken gravy.
My portion and a portion for my wife.... and 2 smaller portions for the kids (no pics)
Ngam ngam hou...
15 minutes later...
Happy when I hear my daughter telling me "Pa, this is nicer than Kenny Rogers"
And I will answer... "Ahhhhbuttthen?" ;D
Damage.
Chicken rm12.00
Vegetables rm7.00
Lemon rm1.20
Corn kernels 4.90
Bacon rm9.50.
Total only rm34.60 and I still have half a bag of corn kernels, potatoes and vegetables left.
Not bad.
MIGHT be doing roast rack of lamb next week if I am not lazy.
-
Well done, Hanz.

Must organise a GTG over your place.

Roast chicken Western style
Just wonder why the bacon were placed on top of the chicken?
Btw, Mrs Han was having a cushy time just to snap the pics & dine ah .......... & maybe to wash up also?
The bacon strips is placed on top so that once it starts cooking, it will release drips of lard to moist the chicken... coz I am lazy to baste it every 20 minutes... lol
And I love crispy bacon to go with my roasted potatoes as well.
And yes, if I am cooking... she will clean up the mess I leave behind.
And if she's cooking? Hell... she cleans her own mess!!
hanz,
this time no watch photo to check the timing ???

No watch la... my Chronomaster El Primero only can time 60 minutes... not enough...
Gives me more reason to get a mechanical alarm watch... or a 12 hour chronograph... ;D

Eat Maggie mee with Durian (instead of watermelon)? Can save money for new grail or not?
-
Eat Maggie mee with Durian (instead of watermelon)? Can save money for new grail or not?
See, this is where the most common mistakes are made.
According to the chinese yin yang principle... there is always a balance.
Maggi Mee (heaty) + Durian (Heaty) = not balanced. (too heaty... stomach might explode)
I choose watermelon based on this principle.
Maggi Mee (heaty) + Watermelon (cooling) = neutral.
I would recommend other cooling fruits such as Papaya and Coconut.
And I highly recommend that when using coconut, use the coconut water instead of plain water for the soup base. Nothing wasted that way.
:mooning: :mooning: :mooning:
-
Oh I see, chef Hanz..
What about steamed Maggie mee with durian, then? By steaming, it is not heaty, I hope.
-

Yes... steaming would be a better option... but your whole neighborhood might be smelling like durian.
I am glad you grasp the concept of yin and yang in such a short while...
-
Hanz, you one helluva chap. You can cook and you're hilarious! I'm still trying to wipe that smirk outta mah face from lol.
For the life of me I can't cook. For me, even Poh sui yew loong ( boil water gets burnt). :Startled:
