Title: Noob review of the Rolex Submariner 14060
Post by: hanz079 on October 05, 2011, 01:24:30 PM
A noob review as there's nothing much to say at the moment.
Just some pictures I took of the unboxing.
Watch was sent for a full service today.

Outer Box (some slight tear at the bottom, nothing major... still in one piece)

Inner Leather Box (Still in good condition)

Opening it.... protective cloth

Tadaaaa... Still with the pillow

Comes with papers, anchor, chronometer tags and 2 extra links.
Currently there are 10 links on the watch. So, from my questions I posted earlier, there is a short of 1 link. And there are no booklets and instruction manuals...

Top Half view... Pip have patina to a slight cream color...
Bezel is stuck at one click after 12. The Rolex uncle say no problem... he will fix it together with the full service.

Bottom Half view... T<25 Dial... I blame ck77 for this T dial madness...  ;D
Markers seems to have some light cream color... or is it just me with my wishful thinking?

Crown side view... dunno why my camera cannot focus... wth...
Is this telling that it's time to get some serious photography gear?

Non crown side view.

The watch in it's full glory.
The links show some scuffs and light scratches consistent with usual wear...
Nothing major like dings or deep scratches... nothing a good buff could not cure.

And lastly, a wristshot.
I like the feel of this one on the wrist... not too big and not too small... just nice...
Since I wound the watch up yesterday when I received it, I set it to the Malaysian Standard time website... I checked back today before sending it for service, it is at -1...
That's not bad for a 15 year old watch don't you think?

My initial impression on this watch is it is beautiful.
The black glossy dial is nice with the white gold encased tritium markers..

No wonder more people prefer this to the date version.
Without the cyclops ka ka cau cau... the dial is clean and balanced.

There are also people who prefer this one to the 4 line COSC version and I can definitely see why.
With 4 lines of text... the dial kinda looks busy... 2 lines is good enough.
And by the way I look at it, COSC or not... the freakin watch is at -1 a day!! (Although only the first day)
What more can you ask for?
I reckon by playing around with the resting position, one might get it to +-0!!

The lug holes also lets you remove the bracelet without any special tool, just a toothpick will do.
No wonder there are those so called "lug hole purists" out there...  ;D

And that's about it... can't wait to get the watch back from service and wearing it with a Bond Nato and try my luck at the casinos again.... not!!!
Or maybe I should get a RubberB strap?
Let's see how it goes...

Nice review of a beautiful watch.
Congrats, once more, Bro Hanz.
I vote for the Nato strap if you were to change the bracelet.  ;)
Take care, Ciao!

Congrats for capturing one of the classics

Bezel is stuck at one click after 12. The Rolex uncle say no problem... he will fix it together with the full service.
Lucky is not stuck at other position  ;D

Bottom Half view... T<25 Dial... I blame ck77 for this T dial madness...  ;D
He he, me pula  ;)

hanz079,

Congrats on a very nice piece. Wear it with good health.

Looks like you are doing the same thing I do (with my Rolex and Tudor), send them for a service as you do not know the service history.

One day........

Hanz079,

Correction needed. You got the Submariner. They got the date version, not the other way around. Original Submariner never had date since it was launch in 1953/ 1954. The date version came out in 1965. Note it says oyster perpetual on yours and oyster perpetual date on the date version.

how long does service take??
Since it is done locally without the watch being sent back to switzerland, I am guessing not more than 2 weeks?

My suggestion is to take the strap/band out of the watch, put a chain with the anchor and use it like it is a pocket watch.  ;D  :Blue:

Sigh... went to the Rolex Service Centre to meet up with the uncle today...
The watch is almost done, just need to wait for the watch to fly over to Singapore to get something done.
Here are some pics that I took when I was in the room again.

Nice, not often seen version with the SS bezel insert.

So, the SS is still a bezel insert?
I thought it was a complete assembly with no insert...

Yes sir, it is a bezel insert. SS bezel insert. If I remember correctly the reference is 79190, made between 1990 to 2000. Last of the Submariner (as we know it) and replaced by the Hydronaut.

Why would the watch need to go to SG to get something done?

The watch will need to be in singapore to get some hardcore upgrading.
Need to get the buzz saw bezel installed and also a megnetic field gererator that is strong enough to deflect a path of a bullet.

Nah... Just kidding... PM sent

Still some little things awaiting rectification.
I am waiting patiently myself...  :Praying:

Yup, I have the same feelings when send the watches for service or repair, the heart is 15 or 16  :Praying:, always want to know when it is done. But the joy is when you finally got it back...

Speedy recovery , I mean your watches  ;D
