Lets share the type of ignorant comment we heard or received when we talk about watches and some funny stories.
1. I met a guy looking to buy a watch at my usual dealer. He wanted to look like he knew a great deal about watches and that he has done his homework. He kept asking whether each watch he looked at has cocks. In the end, out of curiousity i ask him why he asked that. He said he read that watches with cocks are more accurate. I asked him to spell cocks. He spelled "C-O-S-C". :Laughing_on_floor:

Heard the following conversation when I was at Puchong last night:
Buyer at a roadside stall selling "cheap" replica watch, " Ini ori kah?"
Seller,"Macam ori. Tapi harga memang Best"
Buyer,"Itu Frank Muller, Chopard dan G-shiok, semua brapa harga? Ada gerenti kah?"
Seller, "Frank Muller - ori RM18K, ini serupa saje baru RM300. Chopard ini pula lain sikit, yang ori boleh nampak terus (see through), ini tak nampak terus. Itu G-shock RM70, ori RM350."
Buyer, "Itu macam kah? Bagi saya itu Frank Muller dan ini G-Sok. Semua skali RM320 boleh kah?"
Seller, "RM350 final"
Well, not sure if the buyer is ignorant or not but to buy a fake watch at the road side, IMO, is for the :
1) budget conscious
2) one who likes to show off that he/she has an expensive piece
3) one who loves everything "pirated" from watch, DVD, clothings, begs etc.

Person in front of me was looking a pre-owned Omega. He asked the seller what year was the watch produced. When told it was probably mid-80s and is an automatic, he asked " Automatics already got in the 80s,ah?"
-
Cocks!?! Wow... that must be intense in the shop...
I did have someone told me that PAMs are overpriced with ancient technology... I asked why he said that?
He said after paying so much... he still need to wind the watch manually... :HammerHead:
He said that for that kind of price, he can get any decent swiss automatic watch... I asked him why he bought it then?
He said AD recommend that this is "the" watch to get... :Startled:
And then he have the guts to tell me that my Tissot T-Race is rubbish coz it's a quartz chronograph... no value at all he says...
-
Oh, forgot this classic line from a fake Rolex dealer - " This is original Rolex with Japan Seiko movement.." :Startled:
-
Been told by a chap who are selling his AP 15300st that , rolex come out a new 44mm submariner this year... I was like :Startled: and some more this guy wearing a exp ii... ??????

2. Another buyer in another shop i overheard was talking to the SA. He said to the SA, " You say this is sapphire crystal. Why not blue le? You sure or not. Dont bluff me" And then he proceed to ask the SA, " why your tissot so expensive? RM1750!! I can get 1 from chinatown at RM150." The SA after awhile just told him to go there and buy the watch from chinatown.

I bought a replica a long time ago from pasar malam and was guaranteed to be water proofed.
Sure enough it turned out to be as advertised when I took it for a dunking in one of my watery outings.
Water proof = air masuk tak boleh keluar.

There is this dude who is a self proclaimed Rolex King in the China town. He is the main supplier of all Rolexes distributed there. he is fun if you know him well.
He dared to scratch his watches sapphire glass against the lamp post to drive home his wares. Can your everyday AD dare do it?

Time to revive this thread from an ignorant comment I got this morning.
During breakfast, met one of my old schoolmate that I haven't met for ages. (can say he is a loaded fellow)
Said hi and he joined my table... no problem.
We chatted abit and I commented on his Omega Planet Ocean Orange Bezel 42mm...
Nice, can I try it on? Sure he said.
Then when I took off mine and he molested my watch, he was asking me why wear on fabric strap?
Nicer I said... abit variety is good.
Then he said "Ohhh... this watch must be fake, coz the easiest way to tell a fake is from the bracelet quality, that's why you wear it on a fabric strap... harder to see if it's fake..."
I just say "Yaloh... like that oso you know... haih... can't fool your expert eyes" ::)
Although he paid for my breakfast... I feel like vomiting it back out...
One of the worst free breakfast I've had.
And by the way, I was wearing this.

I know what you mean bro. I've had people asking me why my watch has a 'kain strap' when i wear it on a rollie. Those who dont know well enough to call it a nato strap need not be educated further. Just have the satisfaction of knowing that your rollie is more expensive than his omega.
-
OK. This one happen on me :D
When i first got my mechanical watch (Oris, those vintage type) from theBay when I was in UK.. the very first moment i unwrapped the package is to shake the watch to make it "move" and i thought all mechanical watch are "Automatic" like my SEIKO (before this i only have one SEIKO automatic which is my birthday gift long long time ago)...
So, i shake, the second hand move then i thought it's working but it stop after 20 seconds or so... then i shake again, same thing happen, was pissed off and email the seller telling him the watch is faulty.... then he wrote back and said "It's a MANUAL winding watch and you need to WIND the watch MANUALLY to make it move..."..... then i start to realized what's "Manual" winding meant (He did advertise on his sales but i ignore that because i thought all mechanical watches are....automatic :HammerHead:) ... I feel so stupid and email him to say sorry :D
I think he maybe one of those now commenting on the similar topic somewhere else with the comment like "there was one time I got a buyer emailed me asking why my manual winding can't working like an automatic watches.... LOL"
hahahahhahah~~

when you told this story, it reminded me of visiting one of the AD recently, I asked to see the Ball watch, and I was wearing my Damasko with Nato, the guy responded that they also have watches like that, and point me to Casio, Seiko counter, and I just said thank you and walked out. :Scolding:
Do I need to wear my Ball to check out Ball???? :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

U oso kena ar? Lol
Somehow, wearing a Rolex gets the most comment of it being fake.
Especially if u don't look the part. Say if u drive a so-so car and wear normal clothes like padini, here comes the comments.
But like u said, syok sendiri can liao lah...
-
if anyone dare to say my rolex is fake, i'd invite them to a crab cracking contest with my DSSD. See whose steel ding first.

Lol... crab cracking contest?
I will wear a Damasko and comment that your Rolex is fake just for kicks... :Laughing_on_floor:
Anyway, I used to not like Rolex for this reason alone... being called a fake most of the time.
Then I met Ck... ;D
Bottom line is, say whatever you want, I'm the one with the Rolex and not you... :mooning:

Another one.
Was wearing my favourite moonwatch this time.
One fella took a glance and says,
"Eh, your watch no battery ah? The second needle is not moving"
:Blue: :Blue: :Blue:

I was wearing my base PAM manual winding and told my fren how much that cost. Well, he was thinking it's an expensive watch but when I told him I have to wind it manually daily, he was like :o :o :o and laugh straight in my face! :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:
He asked me, "Nowadays still have watches that needs to manually wind kah?"
What shall I say? Just kept quiet and don't even bother explaining.
-
After a crab cracking session, i think the rolex would be scratched up but not dinged. The damasko is resistant to scratches but i am not too sure whether it would ding resistant as well.

Case No 1
In a watch repair shop waiting for my watch while the bracelet is adjusted. Saw a guy with rolek Yacht Master II watch want his watched to be serviced.
Me: Wow, really nice platinum bezel eh.
The guy: No, it is titanium bezel.
Me: Oh really, I read from rolek catalog that it is in platinum bezel.
The guy: Nonononononon, IT IS in titanium...
Me: Okay then, as you said.... (laughing in my heart for his ignorance)
Case No 2
I had nothing to do so go cari gaduh in watch shop
As posted in the "Seiko and mass public" thread
Me: Oh do you know this movement is actually based on Seiko auto chrono movement?
Salesperson: SEIKO!!!!!!!!!!!! NO NO NO, THIS is based on TH in house movement. Same goes to caliber 15/16/5, they are all made in house too. ( the fact that the "caliber 15/16/5 is based on ETA movement lol ) And this also made by TH in house too dont you (pointing at zenith EP powered monaco) Seiko does not do this kind of thing!!!!
Me: How much is this (1887) cost?
Salesperson: Rm18000 including GST.
Me: and walk away laughing at them cause they get their fact wrong.
more to come but had to let me dig it out from my memory :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Well if you keep referring it to "rolek" instead of ROLEX.......he thought you were mentioning about another brand. :Laughing_on_floor:

I have yet to see an 88 with an open 6...if I'm not mistaken, historic collections would have open "6" while contemporary collections would a closed "6"..even the fonts are different slightly

PAM 88 with open 6 ?

I have a feeling I know this one also. Even after it was pointed out by the others, he still insisted that it is Rolex SCOC since it is read as 'superlative chronometer officially certified' on the dial :HammerHead:.

when i was scouting around some shops to look for preowned rolex, there was a lansiii looking apek and his wife in shop. Can hear them talk very loud, boasting what they have and what they can buy.
I looked at some models and was talking to owner if they have pieces with full accessories (box and papers).
The apek looked at me (despite me not having intention to initiate a conversation with him) and said `leng chai...why you bother with box and papers. I've been playing rolex longer that you think. Boxes are a nuisance. We throw them around as they don't add any value to the watch'.
to cut the story short, i also malas to argue....
-

his friend: only , you want? i have jalan ;D
my uncle: <faster hands it back to him> more expensive than Rolex leh!?!?

I would like to share my fair share of story too. Well I'm not a professional watch collector nor a dude born with a silver spoon. I'm just your average guy next door.
I noticed once we get better than others, them sour grapes come throwing jealous remarks or some even throwing defamatory remarks onto us.
My wife is a professional Senior Auditor in a medium firm. My interest and passion in watches has managed to spread the disease to her as well. Has a few humble collections to herself.
But because of her age as the youngest female in her auditing firm with a position higher than those whom are old enough to be her mother, people around her in her company starts gossiping and hurling jealous and sour remarks that her Rolex is definitely fake and all the gold on it is plated.
Even funnier, her half carat GIA certified diamond ring on her has been gossiped as a Swarovski element.
The only thing spared is...they haven't said that her BMW and Honda is fake yet.
She was just telling me about it over coffee last weekend. So i asked her..."So how'd you feel about it?"
Here's my wife's reply...
"Well, honestly, i feel nuthin. Because people who talk behind my back are behind me for a reason. They are jealous about me because they can only dream about the things that I have. While they have nuthin that I have to be jealous about. Furthermore, my watch is more expensive than some of their cars. So...chill la!!! I'm just sharing with you because I find these humans hilarious."
My reply to her is giving her a 2 thumbs up gesture. Because I never bothered about what people say about me. People can say whatever they want with their mouth, janji kita syiok sendiri."
-
Well, many ppls appreciate the brand but can't afford the real thing.
If I've came across this typical queation, I'd answer "If that really makes you happy that I'm wearing a fake pcs, be my guest..

My GM has a Davosa 'Submariner'. And every time i wear my Rolex Submariner, he will keep staring at my watch and make comparisons against his, and keep mentioning how cheap he got it from the States blah blah blah.
I just told him mine is fake, as my Submariner has no date ;D
-
I honestly do not find wearing fakes a major problem. Not everyone is capable of affording luxury items they like, they just want to let themselves syok a bit. Haha. Still I would say, if you can't afford it, don't even think about having it. If you want it, work hard to afford it.

I feel ignorance is bliss.
The more you read and know about watches, the deeper you get suck into a vortex.
Now I'm so nutty about watches, planning not to upgrade car but to upgrade watches.
Wifey thinks I'm sick.

This is an excellent thread! Keep the stories coming. The only story I have to contribute is that a junior sales guy told me that all watches with month and date display are considered as Annual Calendars! I was too shock to react! :o

Great stories! Made me laughed like a fool in the office. Keep the stories coming!

Jeffrey Hopkins states:
Ignorance that drives the entire process isn't just an inability to apprehend the truth but an active misapprehension of the status of oneself and all other objects—one's own mind or body, other people, and so forth.
It is the conception or assumption that phenomena exist in a far more concrete way than they actually do.Based on this misapprehension of the status of persons and things, we are drawn into afflictive desire and hatred [i.e. attachment and aversion].
Not knowing the real nature of phenomena, we are driven to generate desire for what we like and hatred for what we do not like and for what blocks our desires. These three—ignorance, desire, and hatred ; they pervert our mental outlook.

I get comments like: "Hey, why do you like to wear a dead man's watch?"
And I go :o .... just because I collect and wear vintage pieces?

Thanks for the clarification. I used to think all Seikos are from Japan too. ;D

Hey guys, I know I'm late to the party, but here is my story:
I was looking for an Orange Monster at shops in Sungei Wang.
I went in one of the big shops there, they have a big Orient signboard, but have other watches also.
I was browsing through their Seiko collection and,
SA: Hi, what are you looking for?
Me: Im looking for Seiko Orange Monster.
SA: What is that?
Me: :-\ Its a quite well known diver from seiko, has an orange dial, SRP309. Do you have it?
SA: Let me check in our database. *after a while*. We dont have it sir. How about look at our orient divers? *Points at orang m-force*
Me: Sorry but Im looking for that specific watch.
SA: But Seiko is for dress watch. Not good divers.
Me: :-\ Well actually they have good divers too. And Orient is actually under Seiko.
SA: No sir! Orient is another company. Better than seiko! My boss is the owner. All other shops take from us.
Me: :-X

That's quite a story u got there hansrayney!

haha very funny, actually if i understand correctly, orient is owned by seiko too. But your scenario is very funny... haha, definitely not own by his boss
Edited: ya Orient under seiko since 2001
-

That is what i meant when i said "Orient is under Seiko". Means Seiko is the parent company.
I guess many SAs just have no knowledge about watches at all.
Many do not even know what hacking or handwinding on an automatic is. :'(

Had this happened a few times already so it might be common knowledge among ADs.
I have seen guys walking into Rolex ADs and usually accompanied by a pretty girl. They would usually enquiry about solid Gold Rolexes. Yes, solid gold ones. Then, they will haggle a discount of something stupid like 30%. Which of course the AD cannot give. So, they will boast (presumably to their female friend) aloud that they managed to get a similar discount at the airport/overseas/another unnamed AD and show off their purchase (usually a fake Rolex/Omega) on their wrist.
Rolex fakes are the easiest to tell as the date magnification on the cyclops is only 1.5x at most. Some even have glue stains on the indices. :Laughing_on_floor:
And then, the dude will proclaim loudly that he will shop around since this shop refuse to give him a good discount and walk out.
So, when you see a dude enquiring about a solid gold Rolex/omega and asking for a 30+% discount, you will know that the guy is just showing off and know nuts about watches.

Nice tactic. ::)
-
I actually think it is very possible to get huge discounts on far less popular items in an AD, including the solid gold pieces. No?
-
Ya. But not 30% discount on a Rolex when the guy in question is not even a regular customer. And even for regulars, I have only experience 20% on gold Rolexes and only if I pay cash. :o

My recent busy body trip to a rolex AD
Was quoted a way above rrp price for a popular sub model.
I asked why the price is so high when the anticipated price hike hasn't happened yet
And this is was the explanation
We sell to you at this price so that you can wear the watch now and happily enjoy it. And don't have to worry about the price hike anymore when it happens.
Wow. The reverse psychology is quite mind boggling actually

Experiencing the same.. Price above RRP.

makes you wonder how they manage to stay being an AD.

The ignorance displayed in this thread is hilariously ironic!
If you are going to write in a thread about ignorance, make sure your posts are not ignorant!

Back in the days when I was still wearing my 14060... on nato strap
Friend: Woah... Rolex wei...
Me: Yeah... cheapest one I can find.
Friend: Where's the bracelet? Sure fake one right?
Me: Whatever u say bro... hahaha (Sarcastic laugh)
Recently when I am at my AD.
A customer looking at AP watches.
Customer: Why AP watches so expensive ah? They are all machine made right?
Salesgirl: Yes, but finishing is by hand.
Customer: Only finishing? Should not be that expensive right? Did you know Patek watches are made entirely by hand?
Salesgirl: I don't.
Customer: The reason why Patek is so expensive is because they make each and every part by hand.
At this point,my kaypo personality just goes on automatic mode.
Me: I think you have mistaken, parts for Patek parts are made my machines too... similar to AP. Finishing is by hand.
Customer: How did you know? I am certain Patek makes each and every part by hand, that's why they are so expensive.
Me: Whatever you say bro... hahaha (sarcastic laugh too)
Customer: Yes.... They only make a handful of watches a year.
Me: They make twice as many watches as AP makes a year.
Customer: Cannot be la... AP easily available... Patek so rare.
Me: Whatever you say bro... hahaha (yet another sarcastic laugh)

Wearing watches is something which everyone can do.
However, appreciating watches is something of an aquired taste.
Some people just don't get what we watch enthusiasts are going on about, hence generalisng us as 'wasting our money' so to speak. (my friends for one are like that ;) )
The luckiest thing is we have MWF where all understands each others passion for watches, so why care what others think? ;D
-
always a good topic to read at tea time, it's definitely kill the sleepy if u have heavy lunch :Laughing_on_floor:

Another one.
Was wearing my favourite moonwatch this time.
One fella took a glance and says,
"Eh, your watch no battery ah? The second needle is not moving"

Long time ago at "Journey through time" in Starhill.
Mr Thomas Prescher was giving a talk.
Gold case this, precious metal that, bla bla bla research time.
end of his talk was QnA.
(you just know someone will ask THAT question)
"How much does your watch cost?" pipped on young lady.
Mr.Prescher : 200000 euro. any more questions?
Crowd kept silent and everyone walk out. wahlan eh.
Independent means not cheap la. All those rich uncles wearing expensive watches also dunno what to ask. just buy for brand on their wrist.
Btw, Mr Prescher didn't wear a watch. His reason was because he was hairy, his wrist hair kept getting stuck in the lugs, so he uses his handphone for time.lol

I am looking around in AD for Sinn watches, then i came across a particular shop in The Garden
Asking can for the sales lady did they have Sinn U1 fully tegimented. Since it's comes with 2 choices that you can purchased online: partially or fully tegimented. Seems like she doesn't know anything about that, then from the display, I saw a Sinn U1 with bracelet and i have no idea, is it partially Tegimented or fully Tegimented.
this is our conversation:
Me: Is this U1 comes with partial Tegimented or fully Tegimented ?
Sales Lady: This one comes with steel bracelet. :Laughing_on_floor: ( small kid also know that one is steel bracelet )
Me: I mean the case material, this one is partially Tegimented or Fully Tegimented ?
~She ask me to wait and will check with her colleague
Sales Lady: This one have another model in black but in rubber strap ( which is SDR version )
~ then she show me the U1 SDR with black bezel
Me: not this one. i wanted to know this model is Tegimented or not ? ( picking up the U1 with stainless steel bracelet )
Sales Lady: wait for a moment, i'll check with my supervisor.
~then she came back and give me :Dancing_banana: answer
Sales Lady: This one is a Diver watch, and you can use for it diving one, and it's water resistant
( Yes i know the U1 is diving watch, can see from it's rotating bezel, and of course diving watch MUST be water resistant & she's not answering my question )
Sometimes it's frustrating when no knowledge sales attended come and give you with their funny funny answer
Me: it's okay la, i'm looking for a Tegimented one
~then she ask me a question that is a "SINN" from a customer
Sales Lady: what is Tegimented ? :HammerHead: ( you should know your thing what :Scolding:)
Me: then i explain to her about the case hardness, the vickers, resistant to scratches, from 316 steel, 904 steel, and submarine steel and the Tegimented process itself
Sales Lady: Ohh. i seee
~Then she show me the catalog & the pricelist then only i found out this one is partially Tegimented.
So hard just for a answer : "partially Tegimented"
Am i ignorance for keep asking for the Tegimented thinggy? LOL

She should thank you bro as because of you, she'd probably learnt something new and not look so clueless the next time a customer asks the same question.

A friend saw me wearing a Vostok GMT and commented:
Fren: Nice watch
Me: Thanks. Vostok GMT
Fren: Oh, new one ah?
Me: Yes, new.
Fren: Old Vostok still OK but new Vostok too commercialised ... not pure Russian technology anymore.
Me: :o
