Title: Year 1979 Vintage
Post by: hanz079 on September 20, 2011, 12:25:40 PM
Since this thread is a discussion on vintage and know zilch on vintage watches.
I would like to ask if there is a vintage JLC or Zenith that is launched and or manufactured in 1979? (my birth year)
Any pics or links would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

if i may add, how does a watch qualify for vintage status? is it when a certain model has been updated, i.e. SubC introduced so 16610 are considered vintages? or is it when a watch reaches certain age, i.e 10, 20 yrs?

Omnipotent,

I could be wrong but I believe in Rolex, if the model number is 4 digits, it is vintage. If longer, not vintage.

watchmanu,

Why not? The date just reference 1601 came out in the 60s to 70s or 80s. It has the Rolex workhorse movement 1570 if I am not wrong. Great watch at very good price.

Hanz079,

Don't know about JLC or Zenith, but I believe the Rolex SeaDweller 4000 and Submariner Date reference 16800 came out in 1979, also the Tudor Submariner reference 79090 and 76100. Piaget Polo came out in 1979 as well. I know there were a couple of digital Breitling were issued as well. Can't remember the model number.

If you're looking for an El Primero you're probably out of luck. Bear in mind that Zenith was bought over by some Americans in 1972, and production of El Primero was ceased in 1975 to concentrate on quartz. The production of EP was revived in 1986 if I'm not mistaken.

Anyways the best that I can find is a 1979 Defy Ladies watch with quartz movement.
