Title: Watch for below RM1k
Post by: takashi78 on September 09, 2011, 02:28:35 PM
Itchy, thinking of getting something below 1k for a beater.
Something out of the norm and not conventional ;D
After you see some of my shortlisted ones below you might be able to get my preferred style :P

-Anything 36mm and above.
-Quartz/Ecodrive/auto/manual is ok, prefer manual.
-Display back if possible.
-Strap or bracelet does not matter.
-Dress or sports ok.
-Any material is fine also.

-NO square or rectangular case.
-NO homage pieces for now unless it is unique.
-NO Russian.
-NO black or red dials.

Watches i have shortlisted as of now is as below, open to suggestions and discussion. Maybe is good for future when someone is looking for similar budget watches.
All pics below taken from google.

1- Seiko Alba Riki Watanabe at 36mm i believe.

2- Classic G-shock, the one on the right.

Thats all i can think of right now.
Hmmmm any skeleton watches to recommend?
The Swatch is nice but unless it comes with a strap, the bracelet is just ugly IMO.

The Seiko is hot, but the Classic G gets my vote.

Before landyshah gets all excited, I only have love for the classic G  ;D

What about Seiko 5 models - there are many, I know - with display back?  :-\
Take care, Ciao!

what's wrong with the Exp1 as a daily beater?

wow, riki looks good.

for me a daily watch got to be with steel bracelet, as my skin gets itchy and rashes quickly when i wear rubber or leather strap.

is there any swiss army under 1k?

If the Ecozilla, pre-owned also the price is above RM1k. What about Citizen Nighthawk or Orca?

Any particular model or the Orca you would like to share?

The Nighthawk is too busy for me.
I prefer 3 hands max and maybe a power reserve hand at most.

takashi78,

the model is new, released in Basel 2011. Body is 40 mm and is made of nylon fibre. The bezel is aluminium and it is 40 mm. Movement is quartz. It is expected to cost about USD 320. And yes, it only comes with the NATO. Colours are navy gray, commando black, desert beige or khaki green. Model number for the green one is 241514. Also eying it.

I believed most of the watch sifu  over here all started their watch collection with "Quartz" watch before moving toward "Automatic" watch and this scenario apply to "me" too  ;D
Nothing wrong to collect "Quartz" watch as long as you like it and feel the "battery" movement!   :Laughing_on_floor:

I do have one or two quartz watch in my collection. Frankly speaking I wore them when my auto/manual run out of juice and I wear it when I was not outside. They had their pros and cons frankly speaking

Seiko had a quartz diver before but too bad it was discontinued  :HammerHead: :HammerHead: :HammerHead: It is below Rm1k eh. lol

Took a break from my work & went shopping for the piece below at a local mall.
Victorinox Night Vision.
Visited 3 shops, of which 1 was the AD for Victorinox, but no luck.
Instead, my eyes were drawn to a couple of Seiko 5:
a) SEIKO 5 Sports 130TH Anniversary AUTOMATIC SRP172K1 with a rotating 60 min bezel.
b) SEIKO 5 Sports 130TH Anniversary AUTOMATIC SRP162K1 (the 1 in the middle).

Aiyayayay...... it's within my budget, but Which one to get?!?

Between these 2, I will go with SRP172K1, just my preference

since below 1k, why dont you try something out of norm...i mean, if more than 1k, maybe a bit risky to spend on something you dont know...but for below, why dont you try one of those unknown brand, internet brand, just for the fun of it...who know you might end up with something you like....just my 2 cent

Have been searching the web for detailed reviews of the Seiko 5 130th. anniversary models - SRP162K1 & SRP172K1.
Except for a brief mention on Yeoman's, I can't find any reviews on these models.
I guess they are not popular or too insignificant for serious collectors & bloggers to comment on.
Any Sifus care to comment?
Take care, Ciao!

True, not many reviews on Seiko's watches as there are too many of them in the market.
Only the limited few (popular/best selling/high profile) will be highlighted and reviewed.

The specs for SRP 162K1 :
EIKO 5 Sports Collection 100M Automatic SRP162K1
Caliber: NEW 4R36 Automatic winding type with manual winding mechanism
24 Jewels Made in Japan
A window at the 3 o'clock hour reveals the automatic day calendar.
Metal: Black IP plated Stainless steel
Size: 45mm with crown
Band: Black IP plated Stainless steel bracelet
Water resistance: 100 meters/ 10 bars/ 330 feet
Glass: Hardlex crystal
Dial: Black

It has a big "face", ie 45 mm (with crown)

Pls correct if wrong.
I believe the K (as in SRP162K1) indicates movement made in S'pore whereas the J models are made in Japan (as pix in Yeoman's).
Still looking for a detailed review..... :Blue:

Yes, Bryankwc.
There are many Seiko's movement made from different countries - Japan, Singapore and China.
Depending on the movement model no., the different additional letter will denote its country of origin.

Hi, just to add to the topic. Like Takashi78 I am also currently looking to get a watch around the same budget.
I don't really know much about watches, but I definitely prefer watches that are made by actual watch-makers, and not those "branded" watches only. I've had a Seiko 5 automatic watch for the longest time, and I don't mind going back to a Seiko, but am also considering Swiss-made ones for that range (if possible). Preferably automatic (because I'm lazy to buy new batteries), but the straps could be leather of metal.
Do you guys have any recommendations with regards to the above? Though the budget is 1k, I know shops tend to give discounts, so the 1k budget will be post-discounted 20-25% i suppose. I've seen some watches by Tissot and Seiko, and they look ok (don't know the models though sorry); I'd appreciate some kind recommendations.

Spotted this at the AD in Tropicana City.

Retail = RM1,099
All colour variations are available.

But these 2 stands out.

And only the green dial has lume numerals.

First impression, the plastic case feels very light (Swatch comes to mind!). The green dial version was the best looking in pictures but unfortunately not the case in real life. The shade of green of the bezel is too bright for my liking. The beige dial seems to work the best. And doesn't look like it can take much abuse. Definitely not a tool watch. At it's retail price, not worth it IMHO.

I like the second victorinox.
If it feels plasticky (like my swatch scuba 2000) then I will opt for a more solid one.

Just my 2 cents worth of opinion.

Cheers
