Title: Gory images of a G-shock (Not suitable for G-fanbois)
Post by: brolex on August 26, 2011, 07:53:38 AM
Yo, yo... check this out.

These are images of an actual Frogman that has been taken out to sea (not just used at the desk, mmkay?) over a period of one year. The watch was soaked in freshwater after every dive.

The titanium parts do hold up, but observe the cracking rubber bits on the fascia of the watch in exhibit A and exhibit B. The watch has never been worn since the rubber strap began disintegrating as well.

Useful lifespan of the watch used for its intended purpose? 2 years.  :Startled:

I report, you decide.

Well, I dont call myself a fanboy.

Obejectively, at RM 500 ish for these watches, to last two years in such conditions, I'd consider that pretty good VFM. It would appear despite the rubber cracking, the case integrity was not compromised since it kept going out to sea.

I used my G in workshops, jungles, swimming etc for nearly 10 years - no 2000 buck service at "official service centre" ever needed except battery and strap changes.  It still runs and wears today.

These watches are not meant to be "kept for the next generation". They are designed to do a job within a certain lifespan, and in that context, the G shock excels.

The straps are "designed" to disintegrates in about +- 2 years.... ;D

Even when left in showcases, or even in boxed conditions, there would be a shelf-life for this things...

Sound like you are one *shrugs*

If you see exhibit B, that is the rubber casing on the case itself.

The rubber casing fell apart upon the slightest molestation (which I did in the name of science). See Exhibit C for what the G-shock case actually looks like:

for a minute there, i thought the diver was showing the effects of a small shark attack...

 :Laughing_on_floor:

seriously though, what's the point of titanium and rubber? unless the rubber parts are cheap and easy-to-find replacements.

That was unnecessary.

My point was, used for what they are, and for RM 500-1k, they are great for the price -but I wouldnt be snobbish enough to put down any brand. As pointed out by others, its an unavoidable effect on rubber/resin. Nothing is indestructible, not even 20k+ Rolex Subs.

If you think G Shocks are too flimsy for your hardcore "testing in the name of science", then fine, its your money and your choice. Try the same with your Sub and let us know. Either way, I dont see the point of a thread to troll the issue.

Your participation in this tongue-in-cheek thread is unnecessary.

If I knew resin wouldn't last 2 years, I would have gotten myself even more seiko diver units at a third of the G-shock sticker price instead. I'm not trolling - I don't have to act serious unless I'm getting paid to be so. And who are you to judge the significance of documenting the lifespan of specialised G-shock product lines when used for their designed purposes?

You didn't have to be sibuk and bring up my sub into this. It's contextually irrelevant to the topic.

Some people can't take jokes. Not my fault that they live sad lives.

Sigh, another one of those people.

You reported, I decided and gave an opinion.  It wasnt a  judgement, just a view based on my use of G Shocks and that lasting two years in those conditions was decent value. I thought this was the purpose of the discussion, and you called me a fanboy, cant take jokes, sad life etc for apparently no reason.

Joke or tongue in cheek, if thats what it is so be it.  I'm happy not to participate in your thread. Cheers!  ;D
