Title: Why quartz movement cannot make sweeping seconds?
Post by: rusminag on August 08, 2011, 08:16:13 AM
Sorry for the dumb question. Just need to check if anybody know the reason why quartz movements are not making sweeping second moves as per auto/manual movements?
Technically, I believe that is possible. What say you?

It's possible coz I have 2 clocks in my house that are quartz powered and they feature sweeping seconds hand...
It sweeps smoother than the standard 28800bph sweep on my mechanical watch.
Both made in china... Cheap lagi...

Yeah, both wall clocks...
As for wristwatches... Haven't come accross any...
I suppose it's possible though.

Errr most movement in mechanical watches do not 'sweep' as well. They 'tick', just that the 'tick' is too small to notice or see. If you want to see it 'tick', set you camera to take a picture at 1 second and you will see the hands 'tick'. The common ones: 18,000 bph (beats per hour) = 5 bps (beats per seconds), 21,600 bph = 6 bps, 28,800 bph = 8 bps, and 36,000 bph = 10 bps.

28,800 bhp.

21,600 bhp.

As for the quartz movement, it's to do with battery capacity and life. It would be easier to make the quartz movement 'beat' at 1 second duration. Continuous or smaller 'beat' rates are possible but it would take a toll on the battery life.

And as said earlier there are quartz movement with 'sweep seconds' and there are mechanical with 'step' seconds.

question is, by common sense... when someone ask 'sweeping second hand' he/she means the second hand sweep smoothly in a duration of 1/60 at naked eyes.

do we hv to go to the level to show how many beat per second on a sweeping second hand? ofcox we know it ticks rite?

haiyooo...

My mistake for not understanding the question. Will be more careful next time.
