Post by: Alice on August 05, 2009, 12:49:46 PM
Hi Guys,

What do you guys love in a ladies watch? Lets put it into 2 categories. For work and perhaps social occasions. Like your opinion of this....  :)

Welcome Alice

From what i see, some of my female friend like Tissot, Omega, Cartie (Santos 100) at work and some with GP Cateye, JLC with diamond on a spacial occasions... but of course, it's all depend what you are working as and what occasion you are participating ;)

If your job requires you to travel around town, i think better wear something less noticeable or lower profile.. when come to dinner, i think lady like something blink? Just my opinion :)

I saw some ladies strap on a 44mm Panerai with colorful straps (white, blue, yellow, etc) and casual wear...damn "chun" (pardon my language)

A nice Tudor with a lot of blings and a Cartier Santos would suit nicely, esp. for a lady (within your budget)

Alice - no introduction ah?

Hi Scott,,

Glad to see you online. I don't have many in my collections. Just starting out. Hoping to learn and get some good watches with bargain prices.

Some watches are indeed overpriced.... mainly the popular like patek and rolex as they are well like by Malaysian generally. Whats your view on this?

Scott explains it all. :) I agree, Explorer I do looks sporty and classy. In short, plain and simple.

For me, or rather generally men, doesn't like too shinny and sparkling watches. However, Indian man seem to like gold (full gold) very much. And also, those born before 1970. The most I will go is rose gold. Of course, a lady would have a different view and like to have some decorations in their dials and cases of their watches. Like accessorizing their handbags :)

A good looking watch is the 1 that enhances your overall outlook when u dress down and its doesn't stand out too much when u dress up. It blends with u regardless how u dress

Not sure if you interested or not... i was in one of the AD in Pavilion yesterday, they have some nice lady Zenith (open heart) with some diamond on sales...i think after discount maybe within your budget ;) Maybe worth going there have a look

Watch over price is a real hot topic which has been discussed in many forums already ;) it is really hard to comment, at least, i didn't see any conclusion out there. In my opinion, it's really depend how you appreciate that particular time piece or brand... if you like it and willing to spend that amount, then I think it's really doesn't matter if it's overprice or not as long as you are happily wearing it ;) Just my very own opinion..

cheers!

In general, 2 types of Panerai model in the current market, Luminor and Radiomir.

Most of the Luminor model are 44mm and 40mm model (47mm usually are limited or in their Submersible range). I'll recommend PAM000, PAM005, PAM11, PAM112 (44mm, manual winding, leather strap + rubber) or PAM48 (40mm, automatic, leather + rubber(not too sure if 40mm come with rubber)) which all are around your budget. If you like the white face Panerai, can check out PAM113 and PAM114, both are 44mm.

Most of the Radiomir come with 45mm. The 42mm usually are rare and come in expensive material/extra function (like alarm, GMT, etc) and highly sought after (in my opinion, i maybe wrong :p). Radiomir can try check out PAM183, PAM210..these 2 are the common model. I can't think of any other Radiomir model now... Luminor are more common and popular compare to Radiomir.

You can search the above mentioned model online (search by image) to see how they look like ;)
Or check out http://www.paneraisource.com/models/all.html

My suggestion is, go try out in any AD and see which case size fit you better (44mm, 40mm or 45, or even 47mm)..you might be surprised the 44mm fit you well, it is not as big as you imagine  ;)

Hi Scott,

I view the PAM website you sent. Those models you suggested are nice but am afraid its too big for my tiny wrist. Anymore suggestions....perhaps a smaller model around 30mm to 34mm and more faminine one  ;)

I have a JLC Reverso and a Rolex(can't remember the model )

Smallest Panerai is 40mm ;) They don't produce watches smaller then 40mm... I remember Angelo Bonati (CEO of Panerai) said something like this before in one of his interview, "Panerai don't produce watches for men or women, they only produce watches for those who like Panerai"....

It's time to go big...once you in love with the larger watch, you will not go back to 30mm... at least, not easy... give it a try, nothing is impossible

if 41mm stowa marine original too big then get the 40mm marine automatic
(http://www.german-watches.com/pix/a/z/marine40/b10.jpg)

if still big then 39mm stowa antea 390
(http://www.german-watches.com/pix/a/n/1202912843-10716.jpg)

if want smaller then 36.5mm stowa antea 365
(http://www.german-watches.com/pix/a/n/1170046816-15446.jpg)

still big?
then antea sekunde... 35.5mm only

Hi all, I am new here and it's great to have a local forum to support the daily needs of MY WIS.

Just my 2 cents worth of advice. If you do not have the wrist to pull of a big watch elegantly, it's better not to buy it just because every other person is sporting it on his/her wrist. I, personally, wouldn't want to be seen walking around with an oversized watch that pratically looks like a clock on a tiny wrist. Unfortunately, most Asian women have small wrists and it makes a beautiful watch look ridiculous (trust me..my wife looked bloody silly wearing my PAM88).

If you have a small wrist, you may want to consider a JLC Squadra for ladies. It's sheer class.

Yen, that Stowa look a like another Swiss brand...Nomo or something, can't remember the name...

I think big or not is really depend, I saw few ladies wearing 44mm PAM on their skinny hand but they pull it on real nice, I think they use the right size of strap which hold it well on their wrist. Some watches is big but doesn't look big, for example, Sin U1, 44mm but when you wear it, it doesn't really few/look big.

To me, as long as I like that time piece, i really don't care much how people think/look at it..as long as i love then that's my call :D Just me la  Of course, it must take a balance...I don't think I can put on a Panerai 60mm even though i love it and can afford one  :HammerHead: and I don't buy watches just for collection purpose, i mean put on the safe and don't wear it at all...

Go try, try it on in AD to decide if you really love it before pull out your credit card :

stowa has some long history.... its a german brand.... owned by Jörg Schauer

The history of STOWA

The story of STOWA begins with Walter Storz.
In 1927, he decided to branch out from his father's large watch factory in Hornberg/Kinzigtal, Germany, and establish his own company.
The name he chose for his new company was taken from his own name: S-T-O being the first letters of his surname, and W-A being the first letters of his first name. It goes without saying that Walter Storz's talent for arranging things beautifully extended well beyond letters.

Encouraged by the success of STOWA, Walter Stowa enlarged the scope of his business in 1935 and began manufacturing his watches in a small rented space located in Pforzheim, Germany.
In 1938, STOWA was successful enough that he built his own factory.
In just eleven years, STOWA had made for itself a global reputation as the maker of quality timepieces.

On February 23, 1945, the STOWA factory was destroyed.
Undeterred, Walter Storz promptly began construction on another factory. While construction was under way, he moved his company to Rheinfelden, Germany, where he continued to manufacture his watches. Among other design inventions, STOWA created shock protection (RUFA), which is still used in many PUW and Durowe watch movements today.

After WWII, when construction of the new factory in Pforzheim was complete, Walter Storz kept both factories open, which exponentially increased watch production. Exports rose almost 50%, and STOWA watches were distributed to nearly 80 countries worldwide.

In the early 1960s, Walter Storz's son, Werner, joined STOWA.
Werner Storz's primary responsibility was to relieve his father of the strenuous overseas trips. For three decades, Werner Storz successfully managed STOWA, until he found a successor in Jörg Schauer, whose philosophy was in keeping with the intentions of the Storz family. Since taking over, Jörg Schauer has continued the uninterrupted manufacture of STOWA watches..

STOWA is still making watch history today.
Our 2007 collection includes the Antea line, the Airman line, the Marine line, the Sport Watch line, and the Exima line.
all current stowa watches are copying their old design... antea, marine, flieger,  sports....
Jorg acquired durowe movement......... so i believe... he will try not to depend on ETA....

nomos is another company in german based at glashutte.... where the highest quality of german watches made... A lange, GO, Union Glashutte....

but nomos is a new brand.... started 1991.....its watches design is copying old A lange.... simple, bold, clean... typical german design...
started with all ETA.... now making their own movement....
Title: Re: Ladies Watches.....
Post by: sshark on August 08, 2009, 07:52:55 PM
AFAIK, after 2010, ETA will sell its movement as whole unit i.e. no customization. In view of that, watch makers are looking for alternative movements. OTH, capable watch makers will produce in-house movement.

Stowa only can buy from their online store. they don't have AD in Malaysia.
If you order from them with nett price, they will request you provide FedEx account.
If any duties and taxes, they will charge to you. If not, they will sell at gross price, which included VAT.
Nomos only sell in certain countries in Europe.

When I am back in Pg, I used to pay a courtesy call at Woo Hing.

Check out that shop (near the Boon Pharmancy) along the Pg Rd. You be surprised at what you find here.

I recommend taking a look at Zenith Open Heart. Nice design, good movement and not too big not too small
(http://www.thewatchquote.com/mesIMG/imgStd/20486.jpg)

Only thing is this design has been copied to death by other brands. I even seen one Chopard that copied the fonts.

One thing about women's watches, its almost impossible to find one without a dozen diamond or so. How to afford? :'(

Chronoswiss Lady Orea or Kairos  - chic
IWC - Bold

My the other half had a Cartier Santos as working watch. She wore it for the next 4 - 5 years or so, until recently took it for a complete service and polish.
Now, she wear a Tudor (daily) and the Cartier as a 2nd watch. The Epos shown here as a fun / weekend watch.

Can you tell me how much is the smallest Pam...say 35-38mm ( fit a lady with small wrist) ? Perhaps an entry level price.  Just love the look of a Pam.  Wink Its classy and rugged at the same time.  I am looking for one that fit my budget. Just for collection and fun wear during weekend  Cheers

The longer I look at it..... i seem to fall in love with it....

Hi Alice, the smallest PAM is 40mm. The cheapest model is BASE which retails around $14k. Discount is at most 10%. I am not sure if there is any price increase yet due to the current economy but PAM is well known for frequent price increase.

sales is to clear those not popular model... like timemaster.... not every1 buy the design....
so after sales, used watch market price will also come down....
so buy big discount watches only if u like the design and prepare to wear and keep it.....

yes. its from AD

Hi Alice,

Scott is correct. The cheapest base is PAM0 and it retails at MYR 13.9k. However, this is one of the most endearing and difficult PAMs to be spotted at the AD. You'll notice that most PAMs are hard to come by in Malaysia and Singapore (or most part of the world) unless you buy it directly from the boutiques, nearest being the HK or Shanghai boutique. I suspect that PAM0 will most likely be sold without discount since it has been common knowledge that this model:

1) traditionally, only 500 are produced per year (not sure about 2009 quantities; perhaps Scott can verify the production figure by checking the caseback)
2) rumours that it will be discontinued

A few things that you need to know when you want to purchase PAM in Malaysia:

1) AD sell on a first come first serve basis
2) AD usually do not take downpayments since there are too many buyers out there and the AD don't wish to offend any of their customers
3) Usually one shipment from Richemont per month
4) The AD can't place an order for the model you like since Richemont is the party that decides which model to allocate to the AD
5) Each shipment from Richemont is limited, can be as little as 3 watches only.

As usual, PAM tend to increase their price in September although they had in the past been known to increase their price twice a year. If you can get one, buy it without hesitation. If you hear of any shipment of PAM0, let me know as well as I want to buy one.  :D

I am not sure how true this is but my contacts at the AD informed me that the shipment for August was delayed (that was last week) and most likely, PAM0 will not be in the shipment.

Well said Lilpronaz :) I paid for my old 233 at retail..not a cent of discount but now you can get 10% for the high end model  :HammerHead:

my PAM0 is K series and it's 1xx2/1300.

Few AD told me PAM0 will be discontinued too but I really not sure...

Cheers!

Hi Scott, as always, it's who you know at the AD that determines the discount level. The last I check, PAM is still sold at 10% discount for all models except for special/limited editions. I guess 233 was way too hot when you bought it and probably that was the reason for the 0% discount.

I didn't hear of zero being discontinued from the AD. Heard it from a friend who is dealing with special/limited PAM. He had a 249 which he offered me at 40++k and I declined  :o since it's way overpriced from the original retail price of 26k-28k.

It's good news that PAM increased the production for zero last year. It's kind of funny that they have not shipped L yet. I thought they would have....well...only Mr. Bonati knows.

Small wrist size is common problem with most Asian ladies. I think the JLC Squadra Lady ref. 7048420 (all white again) is perfect. Not too big, not too small and the plus point...quick strap change system.  ;D

JLC Squadra lady quick strap change is pretty similar to JLC MC EWC / EWA. There's a lever to release the strap near the lug. You can take a peek at the boutique to get an idea.

These are some pics to whet your appetite.
