ayvin,
Can you pm where your friend bought the SBGH001 at RM 14.5K?
That is the latest HiBeat.. at that price I'd be tempted to buy both the black and white dial.

@ ayvin
I think you can't get a better price than that even from the 2 famous Japs site :)

Any of you guys own a Grand Seiko before? I personally like everything about 'Japan' :Dancing_banana:...really high regards for the quality and innovation. However, would like to hear some comments about the watch, eg realibility, accuracy and how often does it require servicing. I know for sure Rolex watches can run for years n years accurately without any servicing.
Cheers

PS
I have some experience with Grand Seiko automatic timepieces, but have yet to own an SD model. The quality of these Japanese fine timepieces are generally on par with Swiss watches in the same price range. Grand Seiko watches are finely adjusted to a more stringent standard compared to COSC and each comes with its own Chronometer certificate. Service intervals depend on how often these mechanical watches are worn. Got my first GS around 4~5 years ago and it's still running fine so I have not sent it in for service.

Grand Seiko is equal or better than most Swiss watches in term of accuracy. Exterior build quality and movement reliability and durability are on par with the Swiss too. However, I find the Swiss calibres are slightly more appealing aesthetically. The bracelet on Rolex is more solid than my only GS. Next time, I will pay more attention to the bracelet when I check out another GS to have a fair comparison.

sshark,
I totally agree with you. Whilst the GS quality and finishing is at least equal if not better than Swiss watches costing up to twice the price, GS styling is quite limited. That is the limitation for anyone wanting to collect more GS or for a 1 brand person.
The case and bracelets do not have much variation. The only variation are the dial colours and finishing.
By the way not all GS bracelets feel the same even though the design is similar. The steel & titanium bracelets also varies.
That is why I got the SBGC003 being a Chronograph/GMT which looks different from the dress GS. If you have handled the SBGC003, you will find that its very solid and heavy and the steel quality is excellent. The brush finishing is much better that most of the other Swiss. I had 4 Rollies before (all the Sports models except the Daytona) which I have sold off and am still keeping my JLCs but yet the various GS have been on my wrist non stop since I got them.
The other Seikos I love and bought was the Ananta GMT (contemporary & casual look for weekends) and the 130th Ann SBGW033 (dress watch for work & functions).
The only other GS that I will be buying is the SBGA011 Snowflake where the dial is absolutely mesmerising. Perhaps the HiBeat will also be attractive from a movt point of view.
Unless GS comes up with more complications like moonphase, day/date, perpetual calendar, world time, I think my GS acquisition will stop there.
GS has already declared that they want to build the world's best 'basic' watch so I doubt if I'll ever see complications. That they may leave to Credor.

how abt u get the SBGA011 and I molest it instead... ;)
if I'm able to join one of your gatherings, sure you can handle and molest the SBGC003 but I'm anal about scratches though. :P
Everytime I look at the watch a smile always forms on my face... :Jumping:
At other gatherings we even get ppl to wear gloves before they handle the watches..so I'm not the only crazy one.. ::)

Hi Danny,
Nice watches....simplicity is beauty. So is it cheaper to get it from Japan, do they give discount?
-
As far as I'm told, Japanese dun give discount and u dun bargain. They will give u discount when they want.

So is it cheaper to get it from Japan, do they give discount?
Of the three in my collection two were purchased in Singapore and one in Bangkok, so I really have no experience buying GS in Japan, even though I did purchase a Brightz Phoenix chronograph from one of the Japanese online vendors.
However one of my Japanese colleagues once told me that he bought his GS at a good discount in Tokyo by using his Student Card :D. So it may help if you can get a Japanese friend to help you bargain for these watches in Tokyo.
-
In Japan, the max discount for GS is 7% and that is not across the board, only selected models.
They dont practice marking up then giving discounts to adjust their prices.

That is what I am afraid of. Now Seiko is opening GS to US and Euro market in big ways. If the kwai loh got hooked then tat's it... the price will only go up
-

Well if that's the case, after tax refund..probably a good 10-15percent discount...can consider.
