Title: Is Tissot good for a beginner?
Post by: Maverick27 on February 25, 2011, 11:41:18 PM
hi all. how good is TISSOT Couturier (movement caliber ETA 2834-2), especially for a beginner. any comments are welcome guys. thanks!

here i post the official tissot website for the picture reference:
http://www.tissot.ch/?mod_collections/action_getsubfamilies/colid_0004/famid_0102/refid_T035_627_16_051_00
(the one without chronograph, reference number T035.407.16.051.00)

I started with Tissot.  have 2 of them.  till today, never gave me problems.
So yes, its good for a beginner..

but then, people may also say so is a good Seiko, an entry level Ball or Oris. Some may even say save a bit more and buy something higher end, since its you first major watch...

So it depends what you want as a beginner.

ETA's are mass produced, so you have the usual reliability factor and the rare occurence of lemons...

I'd be looking at Oris, Mido or even a higher end Seiko. Not a fan of the Tissot brand myself. I'd consider sourcing the pre-owned market, but that's just me.

I too have a Tissot V8. Graduation present from my dad.
Quartz though. But in general no complaint about the brand. Their prices are not too high and makes for a good entry level into Swiss pieces.

Oris is a good start! after that, the next natural upgrade you should look for is Rolex!  ;D ;D

I always think that Tissot is very value for money.
My first real watch was Tissot PR150.
Their latest collection such as Vidodate and T-Lord is pretty cool.
Check it out. my friend.

Better get something you really like instead of sticking to just Tissot. Shop around. See how it looks on your wrist. Sometimes Tissot looks bulky especially their chronograph.

For the technology, Tissot is good brand to grow your love of watches. Same can be said for Seiko. Unfortunately, the pricing model used on the brand is making it becoming more of a premium franchise. The pricing no longer makes it a level entry purchase of old.

IMHO, the best bet to start someone on the road of a watch junkie would be the Seiko franchise....

Yes, +1 for Seiko.
I for one is a fan of all Jap movement.

Back to topic, IMHO Swiss made with Eta movement can never go wrong, as it has been tested and proven. Whether it is swiss made or Japanese made movement, in the end one has to ask if he/she likes that brand/model? If the answer is Yes, go for it.

For beginners, tissot is a double tumbsup watch. Make sure the watch is screw down crown type.

It gives better water resistance for tissot basic watch.

This following article gives a good explanation about the methods of keeping water from pouring into a watch via a crown.

http://elliotbrownwatches.com/blog/post/why-we-dont-use-screw-down-crowns/ (http://elliotbrownwatches.com/blog/post/why-we-dont-use-screw-down-crowns/)

A watch can have more than 100 meter water rating even with a push in crown if the manufacturer incorporates a number of gaskets that stops water from entering. Case in point is the Seiko's numerous Seiko 5s with 100 meter water rating without the need of a screw down crown; a number of Steinhart's 300 meter rated watch follows the same concept as well as as other notable brands.

In fact, the best example of all is a Casio G-shock. No screw down crown or pushers but works exclusively on gaskets.

Tissot is popular among youngsters, not a bad choice for a beginner

so far i've been to a few Tissot boutique, the salespersons are informative & professional, retail price & discount are pretty similar

I dun know, I actually prefer the design of Seiko over all these entry level Swiss Watch Brands at similar price point.

However, I will consider mid range Swiss watches whenever I could find a heavily discounted one. For example a 75% off Jeanrichard which is just a little higher than a 20% off entry level Swiss watch.

Juz my 2c.

If you are looking for a quartz watch Tissot is a good start. If you looking for an Automatic, for the price I would suggest to top up a lil bit more for Longines. :D

A Tissot is a good start, but so too are the dozens of other Japanese and Swiss marques. But their T-Touch watches have some definite bragging rights over other watches, being a more refined piece of the G-Shock equivalent.

The touch screen sapphire is their call-to-fame. Unique to the T-touch

The powermatic 80 movement catch my attention too, but the downside is the vph of the movement down to 21600 vph. I like more the smooth movement of the seconds hand in 28,800 vph watch.
