Title: IWC, Chopard or Tag Heuer
Post by: Maverick27 on February 12, 2011, 01:48:22 AM
Hello all. actually this is my first time writing on this forum. it seems so hard for me to decide which one to go for between these three timepieces. i hope u all can help me doing a better decision. here are the details:

1. IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph : http://www.iwc.com/collection/pilots/IW3717/

2. Chopard Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL : http://www.chopard.com/en/classicracing.aspx#/en/classicracing/collection/168997-3001/

3. Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day-Date : http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/carrera/men/carrera-automatic-chronograph-day-date/index.lbl?w=CV2A10.FC6235

hopefully u all can provide me with the good reason why these watches better than the other and if possible u can give me the detail of the authorized dealer which can gives me a good discount. thanks u soooo much!  :)

I don't know much but I can certainly tell you the IWC is a clear winner in this case. Tag Heuer no doubt makes some fine timepieces but their heyday has long since passed and most of their newer collections are often over-hyped, overrated and overpriced. More or less same story goes for Chopard. No offence in the choices you've made though. Matter of personal taste but I do urge you to consider something from IWC's Portuguese line, a model with a colourful history and a timeless classic. Whatever watch you decide to get, I only wish you enjoy it and wear it in good health. Cheers.

The above model IWC, CPD n TAG are mainly eta based mvmt and just like car (comes in ckd or cbu from eta).  But if you look at Tag within the price for manufacture mvmt will be the TAG Carrera 1887 (mdl CAR2110/blk dial or CAR2111/sil dial) but its a Seiko IP and it still value for money compare with IWC n CPD.

IWC used a eta 7750 based plate only and other components are made in house by IWC.  CPD will be an eta as well but with a better finishing on the mvmt.

For me that TAG 1887 is a clear winner.  As there will introduce the new change with a tachymeter bezel that look a bit odd.  The current batch with the smooth bezel is better looking like a timeless classic and only produce in a small quantity only.

From my source LVMH, the price increase (on 15 Feb after Valentine) for this mdl is very great abt xx% from current RP RM12000/- to new RP RM14200 (blt version).

Even with the price increase kick in, the TAG 1887 still a better bet compare with others.

Look into it and do your homework.

[no discount mentioned in forum, please pm]

i will definately choose IWC as i m a fans of them. to me tag is always overprice and i have bad experience with their calibre 16. so loose confident on them.

Sorry to hear tat but share with you even then IWC 3717 and Tag Cal 16 also based on eta 7750 as well.  Looking at the huge quantity tat Tag produce compare IWC. sure there will be some overlook by their QC dept.

All eta 7750 based chrono are good workhorse mvmt.  That why most of the renown watch brand used them as their chrono mvmt and different finishing depends on the price market segment.

if i were to buy based on my taste..the tag looks great! display back..nice build quality overall..if i were to buy if im a WIS..id choose IWC..a more sophisticated brand..the chopard wont enter my list ahaha

iwc 3717 is a clear better choice. classic forever green german pilot design. much better resale value compare to the other 2. iwc brand worth more and is different class to me

chopard better get the in house luc movement.... superb quality!

tag, hmm.... every 1 know tag, same price i better take ball, better build, higher spec, better resale value..... some more got h3!
if want to take tag 1887, better take newer improved movement seiko brightz phoenix... price slightly lower but matching quality with better movement!

IWC by a mile. The quality and finishing is impeccable. Furthermore, it is one of the original five suppliers of the original b-uhr.

Tag is simply not in the same league as IWC or Chopard.

IWC 3717....

But this model is getting common... I meet 2 people in a small open house yesterday wearing the same watch....

But then again, what the rest said it's true, I will go for IWC ;)

Not really alot of fans of IWC per say but given that 3 choices the IWC is the clear winner IMO.
So you know what my vote goes for hehe

Btw, I'm getting my tag1887 tomorrow... Can't believe I will get this one but it's really
Value for money and nice looking dress watch!! Poisoned by Mr Danny!!! :HammerHead:

Iwc3717 uses 7750 and I used to owed 2 before, both sold because I don't like the 7750 rotor wobble when u swing your write.. It's a very accurate watch and iwc did adjusted it to 5 positions ;) this model also value for money... I'm not sure the retail now but I think its around 16K.. PM me if you want to check out details and discount..

If you like chrono, maybe can check out other brand or the iwc splitfighter (same as 3717 but in White dial, at least this one less being spotted) ;)

Good luck;)

Its silver dial Scott hehe.

Well i am a huge fan of Chopard, but not their ETA based watches.
Have you checked out the Chopard with LUC movt? wondefull ! To me rivals anything from the big boys in terms of finishing.

7750 is under ETA. Grade depends on manufacturers.

according to this timezone.com forum, chopard uses its in-house movements and one of the many companies that in the past supplied movement blanks to the Swiss watch industry under the auspices of Ebauches SA (now ETA). is it good or the other way around?

Ya ya... I bought  myself a 1877 silver dial :D... But haven't got it yet it's still on te way from the supplier to my AD ;) finger cross it will arrive safely and soon :)

Btw, this model will release its 3rd dial/desgin version soon... First version, tachymeter ok bezel; 2nd, no techymeter; 3rd (soon release and sell in US and the rest of the world), techymeter inside the inner bezel.

The 3rd version will have black, silver and white dial ;)

I think the one with the tachy bezel was still prototype but the production version is the one without.

So technically if they come out with one its technically the 2nd look or version only hehe.

hopefully u all can provide me with the good reason why these watches better than the other and if possible u can give me the detail of the authorized dealer which can gives me a good discount. thanks u soooo much!  :)

Personal opinion:

1. IWC 3717 - I'd rather get the Damasko DC56 (http://www.damasko.de/eng/dc56-black_technik.htm). Cheaper, better case. I have the DA36, except for the strap, it still look like the day that I bought it.

2. I always associate Chopard with high end luxury jewellery. Happy Diamonds anyone? :)

3. The only Tag I like is the Link Chronograph Calibre 36 (essentially an El Primero 420 movement). And it has a pretty nice bracelet to boot!

But then again, regardless of movement, aesthetics, and whatever not, always buy the watch that you dream of.

Happy hunting.

but honestly, each brand has it good and bad... but value for $ really depend on your personal preference.. it's really hard to say which brand to go for...

You got it exactly right bro!
The forum can only give ideas and maybe technical comparison which you might or might not have considered before.
At the end of the day no matter how people say this or that watch is good or not, you are the one spending the hard earned money on it and thats what counts.

Finally, after so long surveying to make the best decision (including PAM 000). I decided to go for IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph. It is a really fine piece of art, engineered only for men ;) and very precise in build quality. I never regret on this purchase. Im a very happy and proud IWC owner right now

I just did a count of watches in my safe, 26 TAGS 17 of them quartz , guess My watch collection sucks ... ha ha ha ... But still, replying to this thread, I'd say IWC, but watch is a very persional thing, I have some bell & Ross, overpriced ETAs, but hell, it's my fav. Sinn is just a German case with a 7750. Omega is so common.. jean Rcihard, own movement, so what, no second hand value, Rolex is a rolex, blah blah blah.... this and that lah ...actually the only question you should ask is, " Do you Like it?"

Cool ! But please always practice the 6.30 watch hands position before you change the day or the date which you should practice on all mechanical watches but if you already know treat it as a refresher. Thanks for the positive feedback, cheers!!

Yes it is the 'safe' position to adjust the date, unless you do one full rotation to ensure the date change at 12 midnight and subsequently position the hands at what ever time (but not between 10 pm to 2 am) to adjust the date. So with the hands at the 6:30 position, you are pretty sure the calendar mechanism has not engaged (if evening) or have just disengaged (if morning).

Typically I will do one full rotation of the hands to make sure the date changes and subsequently position it at 6:30 (pm) before I adjust the date. Why pm? Well after changing the date (to the day before), You don't have to turn so many time the crown to change the date (at midnight) and subsequently to the correct time.

Hope I did not confuse anybody.

Cant really compare Tag with IWC and Chopard, their different tiers. Between IWC and Chopard, I think IWC have better brand recognition hence resale value. Chopard also retail jeweral and accesories, so for a pure watch enthusiast, IWC is the one to go!!

do you buy the watch for investment / resale later? Because you seems to be that kind of buyer. If i were you i would prefer to invest in some other thing instead of watches. I buy watch to wear because its workmanship and movement and not because of resale or recognition by other ppl (sad to say some ppl does so )

do you even look at chopard watch at all? Try to look at the luc series and gmt pro one instead of mille migila series. Some of the watch really nice and not to mention unik movement (winded by micromotor).

Both iwc and chopard had pro and cons and had different kind of style, so its up to buyer to decide.

I'm into iwc now too especially after seeing a frens top gun but I'll still that elusive Rolex then look for an iwc n panarei ;)

This forum has poisoned me

Btw hk416, I really like the way u cycle with ur iwc mate. Really says it all with that pinarello of urs although I've yet to see anyone here cycle in anything then a polar, timed or suunto ;) it also shouts of the watch being something more then just a jewelry ;) it actually has specific function

Gigi I'd buy a watch to wear  :Dancing_banana: if got resale value a bonus but id buy it  cause I like it. Im all for wearing a pair of jeans to rough it out or driving a 4x4 to go off road  so the watch should be bought to wear and cause it looks good  ;)

I dunno why ppl are so preoccupied with resale value of their watch?

do they think about the resale value of their underwear and jeans?

even diamonds do not have any resale value at all... if you wanna think about resale value wear some bloody 99.99 gold mint coins and you'll definitely have some resale value on those.

HI sifu
Read this IWC forum it is nice watch...I got one IWC Pilot 3717 as well...The Ad advise to put the hand to 6 30 when change date and day because only when we adjust the date /day after 12pm..and we need to set the date to yesterday and the hand to wind round to adjust the date to today date...correct me if wrong....
if we adjust our date/day before 12pm...it is ok to just change the date and day....cheers

Basically some mechanical movement with date complication cannot have the date adjusted between 9pm to 3 am, your manual would be the best bet. This is prevent damage to the date change system. As such, the AD will tell you to put the watch at 6:30 9am or pm) does not matter and then adjust the day and date or date to the day before. So if today is Sunday the 30th, you would set the time to 6:30 and adjust the date to the 29 and day to Saturday. Then adjust the time so that it becomes Sunday the 30th. Hope this helps.

Worst is... The parts for this date wheel are more fragile than other parts... So be careful

Hi chris, yeah that is the correct way to adjust to 6 30 and then set the date to the day yesterday and wind it until today date and day and then set the time two round 12 if your watch is dead and you are adjusting the time after 12 pm...
what if your watch is not dead but you are just adjusting the day and date and it is b4 12 pm?
we can just wind the date and day only right? without the hassel of set the time again to 6 30 bla bla...:)
