Have read past posts on watches that a beginner should aim for when building a collection. Forum favorites here include watches such as the Seiko SKX007, Citizen NY0040, Orient Mako in very early posts to mentions of microbrands such as Steinhart in more recent posts. Most of the suggested watches are discontinued or trading at much higher prices these days. This is a result of inflation or changes in demand as evident in the prices of brands such as Rolex. A question I would like to ask here is; what watches would you recommend a beginner add to his collection today? I think to further narrow down the criteria, the watch should;
1. Not be trading above retail;
2. Preferably be priced below RM1,500 ( looking at entry models ) but a ceiling of RM2,000 is fine;
3. New or pre-owned is fine;
4. Preferably a handwind or automatic.
Let's see if times have changed the recommendation for a beginner collection and what kind of value can a collector get today. Thank you in advance for any recommendation.

Recently got a 'baby tuna' srp641k1. Very happy with the purchase. Would make a good so called 'beginners dive watch'.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/da428c49a3e47f9f1a771eeaa5b0543a.jpg)

RM2000 most likely covers japanese brands and japanese movement watches?
Can consider, Tissot, Rotary, etc.

With a budget below RM2,000...
1. Quartz, handwind or automatic
2. Japanese, Chinese, European or Swiss
3. Mainstream or independent (probably can't afford independent)

Probably looking for models with the best bang for the buck. So cannot afford to be choosy with the origin of the maker. I guess this advice goes out to those looking for the best value for beginners embarking on this adventure.

I guess the Hamilton Khaki below is a good choice to add to a beginner’s collection.

Seiko also is a good choice. An example as below;

Those are some interesting choices indeed. The Hamilton looks really good. Will sure give it a look. The orange seiko is really different. I have not seen one in the stores whilst browsing.

Nice choice. What size is this watch?

A few that I can think of would be the Orient Kamasu, Hamilton Khaki, Seiko Flightmaster SNA411, Citizen Nighthawk.
There are many others but these come to mind fast.
Oh and definitely a Gshock. Specifically the G5600E but most any would do.

You can try any of the Seiko 5. It is same body as the Skx007. Think it is a good starter watch as you refine your taste over time. Good luck and have fun.

Ditto on this. Good choice if you are starting out today. Enough variety too.

Maybe a used Glycine Incursore?
