Title: Budget 2019 announcement - Increased Tax for luxury items
Post by: spayre on November 03, 2018, 08:46:57 AM
Budget 2019 announced a higher tax for luxury items. Any forummers will be changing their plans to buy their holy Grail by next month instead of 2019?

I have been trying to find out where in the budget speech this is mentioned but have not seen it. Are you sure this is true?

Higher tax on sugary items, but I don't think the luxury watches were included in there. The part that affected us would be more along the likes of :

"The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN)  to look into and investigate "extraordinary wealth" such as owning luxurious goods including jewellery, watches, handbags, luxury cars or real estates."

While we could argue that a couple of Rolex pieces here and there would not constitute as "extraordinary wealth", nonetheless if IRB starts looking at local AD sales proceeds and credit card invoices to analyse buyers, this could create unnecessary attention to this bobby of ours.

Why would you blame someone who hasn't a hand in the new Budget?
