Title: Please, rate my project - Gnomon - the sundial inspired wristwatches
Post by: gnomon on July 26, 2017, 10:08:31 PM
The project I'm currently working on is called Gnomon and inspired by the ancient Roman sundials. I want to combine this aesthetics with a modern wristwatch. The format is 12-hour single hand running on automatic movement. The only hand refers to a gnomon itself and the design's layout refers to sundials appearance as well as its time measurement system. The inner dial layer is made of scratched steel with the unique texture made by hand. The straps are handmade too. The back lid is engraved with zodiac signs which correspond with hour numerals in zodiac system.

All watches on the photos are actual prototypes, so you can judge clearly on the current status of the project!

the concept is kinda nice but its really hard to tell the actual time. For example u could tell 12.30, 1.00, 1.30 and so on but what about 12.33, 1.42 and all?

The watch is accurate to 10 minutes blocks. So, telling time to 12:30, 1:00, 1:30 should not be a problem. In between times... estimates I guess.

To me, interesting concept and the watches do look nice. All the best to Gnomon.

We're going back in time I guess. A lot of estimation is required to tell the time. It'll be cool to be able to tell the time just by looking at the position of the sun / length of the shadow I guess.

Nice to see new design with inspired elements in the market. That also reminds of Jaquet Droz, Meister Singers, Luch etc.

Thanks for the kind words!

As for telling the time it's much easier than it might seems. First of all, it's about a single hand, so you can't read the time the most precise way. However it's a matter of habit, so you just need to get used to it. The thing is that you can tell the time both with the outer layer and without. You can use the inner dial only since it offers all necessary indexes and markings. The outer layer is about more authentic way of telling the time since in refers to the original idea of sundials and it's up to us wether use it as a supportive dial or rely only on it. It's not the sun, but the movement which lets this watch tell time, but you still can do it as if it's a sundial :)

The markings are to 10 minutes so you can estimate to 5 minutes. Good enough for most people.
