Title: Looking for a travel GMT/Dual Time/world time watch - any ideas?
Post by: landyshah on November 30, 2010, 10:28:08 PM
Hi all

Appreciate some opinions. Am looking for a cheap-ish GMT/dual time/world time watch to bash about on holidays. Not keen to use my Glycine (more for business trips) and G Shock (too huge, used for outdoor work only). Essentially, the watch should be at home for dinners/sea swimming/hiking etc with a bit of WIS cred  ;D I had the Bernhardt Globemaster GMT but let it go as it was too diver looking, and the GMT is hard to read.

So, WR up to 100m, GMT/Dual time or world time function, analog or digital possible, quartz is fine for a pick up and go watch, black face, at least 40mm size, budget up to say RM 1000 or so. No preference on Jap/Swiss but at least should be a recognised watch (not fashion) brand.

Ive seen some from the likes of Torgoen (model T05 looks good), but those are not sold here...so I have warranty concerns, neither is it a reputable brand as far as i know

Any ideas for something that can be bought locally?

Seiko is a good choice for digital GMT watches. This is 1 of the many variation of the perpetual calendar with GMT quartz watch

and fully digital

Thanks, yes my first thought was Seiko definitely...

I saw some Criteria watches that had world time/gmt and seems to fit...but I am not a fan of bracelets. The problem is that the Criteria watches has some weird lug system..so standard straps cant be used. Anyone knows if can change to rubber?

Check out Steinhart GMT-Ocean 1.
Just bit more than your budget, EUR320 EUR390 before VAT rebate and shipping.

Isn't the Steinhart GMT-Ocean 1 also very diver looking and similar to the Bernhardt Globemaster GMT???

Thanks for idea CK, I was about to say, I could have kept the Globemaster in the first place, instead of buying a Steinhart/Debaufre now  ;D
Besides, the Ocean-1 looks too "Rolexy" for my taste (not a Rolex fan obviously haha)

Some of the more "commercial" brands like VSA or Wenger also got some nice models. Still looking...

What do u mean u can't read 24-hour format? Can't as in dislike?

N79....IWC Spitfire...nice, but same like my MK XVI, too fragile and hardly counted as outdoors watch for activity holidays.
A bit far away from what i had in mind : "Am looking for a cheap-ish GMT/dual time/world time watch to bash about on holidays"  ;)

Anyway, I've sold my existing G Shock and put in an order for another - with digi ana display to help my tired eyes.

It's cheap, does the job, doesnt attract attention, and i'd be 100% confident in using it for all kinds of activity. This model has quite subdued styling, not too "butch" I think

Scott, this one might solve your inability to read 24 hour time?  8)

Thanks all for ideas.

Can't as it i can't straight away tell you if 2045 is 845... don't further complicate or confuse me ;)

The Montblanc worldtime watch (world map on the dial) is a very nice worldtime watch at below RM17k.

Montblanc is a good watch but his budget is only up to RM1k. Gap too big.
