Dear sifu,
as stated, just courios is that a MUST?
Normally i just put on table, some piece i never wear it more than a months.
will it damage the mechanism if the piece not moving at all most of the time? :o
-
My personal opinion it doesn't. A good movement should last you for very long time
-
I keep my watches in winders as I could just pick up whichever piece that I want, at any time, and the date and time would be properly adjusted. And more importantly that the little convenience, was that a watch that was kept wound as per specs, should self-lubricate and thus kept the gears in good working condition. The lubricant would be more prone to hardening over time if the gears were not kept moving. Therefore, having watches in winders should keep them relatively more maintenance-free compared to having them lying around for months to end.

Thanks for your info, D'Andy. Seem like I need to invest $$ to get winders for my watches.. any recommendation where can get the reliable and valued for money's winders in KV?
Or website for online purchase? Thanks in advance!

It will be good to store it in watch winders for well-balance the lubricant equally, IMO.
-
The incremental benefits may be too minute for having a watch winder. Having the gears work all the time increases wear and tear IMHO. Get one if it helps you from the need to adjust the watch when you want to use it.

Every weekends I spend about 10 minutes to shake and handwind them, sun bathe my eco drive. Then I take a quick look at those battery powered watches for flat battery sign.

IMHO, no. Having a winder is only useful if you have many watches and rotate often. Get it if you want the convenience. The lubricants used on our watch movements these days are leaps and bounds better in quality as compared to watches from many years ago. So a watch is good sitting idle for around a month. Then I would recommend giving it 40 turns to get it moving and that is it.

Noted and thanks for all big bro comments. Cheers!

If you have complications of any of the followings, and you would like to wear the watch once in a while, I will recommend to have the watch stored in watch winder to maintain the function:
1. Perpetual Calendar,
2. Annual Calendar or
3. Equation of Time
You should know why you should do this ;)
Other than these complications, my answer is no.

I use a watch winder only on vintage watches with day dates that are harder to set or moonphase /perpetual calendars.
The newer date / day date with quickset doesn't usually warrant a winder.
-
I think a good warch box usually sufficient. Unless you have moonphase or perpetual calendar.
As for other watches, your rotation should cover all watches. If you have watches not on your wrist for more than a month, you should really review your collection.

Basically for my automatic watch I wind them every once a week to let it run so the oils are circulated amongst the gear trains..

Just curious, since I do not know your sotc, why don't u wear your automatic once a week instead of winding them once a week?

Yes. It's a must for those have a lot of automatic watch.

Actually if we have one or two piece that is easy and we just buy one/two slot winder to store them, but how about if you have more than 10 pieces? Is that mean we have to buy 10slot winders to store all of them? For me I normally wear 1or2 particular piece for my daily watches, others for weekends (sometimes count monthly
). By the way, I'm newbie for mechanical watches, still have a lots things to learn for mech watches

speaking about watch winders... any good brand and place to purchase them in KL?
-
I don't like watch winder. I personally find winding and setting the time for my watches very pleasing. I think you have to work for it a little for things you like.
-
I believe a cheap watch winder will overload the auto mechanism. So if you must use one, make sure you do your research carefully on what to buy. However because branded watch winders cost more than 1K plus each, i normally just rotate my watches weekly. I also don't believe not wearing the watch for months will ruin the mechanism. It could decrease the accuracy a bit as the oils have set but don't think it will ruin it.

There are some good winders on the sale corner at the moment ;-)

I use sometimes put my watch into winder to fully wound. It is better than manual wind the crown.
-
for me it is convenient as i can wear it and pick it up at anytime i want to

Right, I totally agree with you.
