Title: PP 5167A vs AP 15400ST
Post by: adamjohari on December 22, 2016, 07:26:03 PM
Hello all,

As some of you may know, I've sold all of my watches (only two high end ones really). Though both of them are lovely, I think I'm going to go the casual route and get something I'll wear on a daily basis. I feel a little naked on the wrist at the moment... and am starting to consider what my next purchase will be.

I was thinking about the 5167A or the 15400ST blue dial. Which one would you guys prefer? Attached are pics of both:

Pros:
AP = Gerald Genta design. Beautiful dial.

PP = Brand name. With a nato I feel like this watch will be pretty rugged. Dial is quite beautiful too.

Cons:
Something tells me that the AP will look too large on my wrist....

And on the other hand I feel like if I get the aquanaut it's because I couldn't afford the Nautilus

Thoughts?

Adam

15400 is a bit bigger; only one other comes to mind. 15202 Jumbo :-)

Purely from own preference.

Tried the PP Aquanaut and then the nautilus. The nautilus wins out due to its flexibility. Felt better on the wrist and could be worn with casual or smart. Rubber felt weird with smart dressing.

Had both AP15400 and 15202. Preferred the jumbo but both were great.

The choice is yours.  If AP 15400 against the PP Aquanaut. I would take the AP anyday. However if you are willing to save up a bit more. The nautilus would be great

Cheers

As a current owner of both watches, I can only give you feedback based on your two choices. At the end of the day, which watch you choose is entirely up to you.

The Aquanaut has the advantage of being a Patek (brand name like you mentioned). Mine came on a metal bracelet so I do not have first hand experience of the rubber strap. One thing that I must highlight to you is that the caliber 324SC in the Aquanaut does not hack. Some may find this annoying but honestly, this does not affect the accuracy of the watch as a daily wearer. The Aquanaut is a watch that you can dress up or down and with a 120m WR, is very versatile as a sports watch. I would think the disadvantage you mention for the Aquanaut is similiar to a person feeling that he bought a submariner because he could not afford a seadweller. I would say that it is a little unfounded as both are different in design.

The 15400ST is, as you mentioned, a design of Genta's so it is iconic. Movement hacks and handwind and is accurate. One thing i would like to highlight is that the bracelet of the 15400ST tugs at the hairs on my arm but this may not bother you. At 41mm, it does wear bigger. If you are a fan of simplicity, then the AP is the way to go as the dial is less busy as compared to the Aquanaut.

I always thought the 15400 is too big and it doesnt really assemble the true royal oak, well that is just me. I am not a big fan of aquanut pp , but i do own one myself. However, if you would ask me between this 2, i will choose pp for this, since its more sporty and yet elegant. But, if it would be the 15202 AP, then i would choose the 15202. And this is just my perception and don't take my word for it. At the end you have to enjoy your piece.  I have a rather big wrist, 7 inch wrist .

I'd go for the pp aquanaut out of the two. Think it works better for casual and will pick up less scratches with daily wear.

Similar dilemma.. PP eventually.
On the other hand, sometime people may mix up with AP and Hublot as both bezels are kinda similar on certain angle.

Have both of them. Both are my favorite. I bought 15400 first then 5167 later on. For daily watch u might wanna consider 5167 since it comes with rubber strap.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm in the waiting list for the 5167, which is like a 3 year waiting list. But I'll be paying retail. Hahaha.

Anyways, I think I'll go for the 5167 and change the rubber strap to nato strap. There are some nice straps out there. Like the ones from BluShark.

The problem is, can you stay naked for 3 years?  ;D

I'll go for the AP, because AP design is more stylish and iconic.

I had both 15400 and 5167 for a period of time, but eventually sold the 15400 as it wasn't getting enough writst time. After getting used to the slim elegance of the 5167, wearing the 15400 felt brutish and uncultured. The watch also wore larger than its 41mm and felt too bulky and cumbersome. Good luck with sourcing the 5167.... I waited a year for it!
