Interesting read and experience... One get special treatment while wearing luxury watch..
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-3807529/First-class-upgrades-dinner-invites-amorous-women-One-traveler-reveals-far-wearing-expensive-WATCH-you.html
Anyone experience the same? Do share it...
Mostly encounter it at luxury watch shop... Sales personal will look at the watch in hand before they choose their approach... Friendly or just ignorance...

Interesting article.
Guess it would depend on which crowd one is missing with because not everyone is familiar with the many high end watch brands out there.
-
I think it is very likely happen in US or fully developed countries.
-
In our country, the Black card, the "Dato" title, and the decent dress-up are more convincing and recognizable.
-
In my opinion, it is likely that the article was written to promote the service. From my personal experience, I have not received any special treatment anywhere whilst wearing any one of the Trinity or even Rolex for that matter.

Same here. I guess the proliferation of AAA grade copies could be a factor

Not received any special treatment ever when I'm wearing my Rolex...haha...maybe not luxury enough as compared to RM...therefore normal treatment... :Laughing_on_floor:

I don't think it'll make much difference here.
Just walk down Chee Cheong Kai,you can pick one up anytime

I will be working in Singapore today till Friday.
I intend to conduct a simple test on the hypothesis: whether there will be a different treatments as I wear an Explorer II and MM300 separately!
Testing method : one day wearing Rolex, one day wearing Seiko, and go to the same place and the same waiter/shop keeper.
Testing places: hotel breakfast lounge, prawn shop that selling preowned watches, and jewellery shop.
Testing on Explorer II:5-Oct
Testing on MM300:6-Oct
Please comment if you guys need to add on anything to enable this test to be conducted effectively! Thanks.

Only a few comments about the piece occasionally. Definitely nothing out of the ordinary.

Dress similarly on both occasions. Ask to see the same watch on both occasions. Let us know the results after your trip.

Yes, @G.MAC bro. I have thought of that and got it prepared, i will wear the dark color Bonia short-tsleeves shirt , totally same type/pattern, just the shirt pattern stripe, one is dark blue and another one is brown.
-
Not sure special treatment or not..
Walked into a random watch shop, asked to buy a pair of spring bars but got it for free.
The salesperson said 'i'll give these for free, but please buy your next watch from us'
-
Bro cocas, please test at massage centre too .. Lolz

@asimo @Jedirat bros.
I doubt the test on massage center can help in proving the hypothesis.

Remember you need to display the watches right in front of him,you don't want him to guess what watch you're wearing.

Seriously, I don't think it's a good idea to do it as you recommended.
By the way, it's a very interesting experience today with Explorer II.
I will be writing up the hypothesis conclusion tomorrow once the test is done  .

Finally, the 2-day test completed.
5-Oct: Wearing Rolex Explorer II
1. Test at hotel breakfast restaurant:
The lady collecting my breakfast voucher greeted me warmly but I don't think she paid any attention to my watch at all. The foreign Indian waiter taking my order with very good manner too (he didn't look at my watch).
2. Test at preowned shop:
I enter the shop during lunch hour. Walking in the shop looking around for more than 10seconds, no one bother to come and serve me but once I look up with eye contact and asking for preowned JLC, the old sales attended me responsively and politely. It could be my bad habit that when I look around in a shop I always put my both hands at the back hand-in-hand. But the old salesman did notice my watch when I asking for JLC.
3. Test on jewellery shop:
The salesgirl greeted warmly at the loose diamonds section, patiently trying to select the right diamond that fit my budget.Due to the jewellery lighting is to bright, I believe she did notice my watch when i stepped into the shop.
To be continued...

6-Oct: Wearing MM300
1. Test at hotel breakfast restaurant:
The lady and Indian foreign worker still greet me warmly just like yesterday.
2. Test at preowned shop:
I hesitated a little bit to enter the shop because yesterday I asked for JLC but the shop does not carry it and I did not make any purchase at all.
By the time I stepped in the shop but I didn't really look around , I went to the old salesman and asked him see if he is willing to share any preowned shops that carry JLC, he politely replied with the plaza name but not the shop name but I think his attitude is more "cold" than yesterday.
3. Test on jewellery shop:
Too bad that the salesgirl still remembers me and very eager to push selling me the diamonds I saw yesterday. But I still didn't buy anything and quickly left the shop. I don't even want to look at the salesgirl expression.
To be continued....
-
Based on your conclusion, my personal opinion would be;
1. The lady and foreign worker's job is to greet all the hotel guests warmly.
2. The old sales staff may have known and/or surmised that you are not a customer and/or a prospective one so he is cold.
3. Jewelry shop, I agree with what you said that they want to make the sales.
To be honest, there will not be a clear gushing of preferential treatment from anyone just because we wear something expensive. Maybe not on this side of the world. Nonetheless, good on you to actually conduct the test.

Conclusion:
The test completed. Out of the 3 places, the test at breakfast restaurant has succeeded in proving that there are indifferent for services/treatments received when you wearing different watches.
Preowned shop and jewellery shop tests were having weaknesses upon conducting the test. Because they recognize you, and they somehow expect you to buy something from them during the second visit. If I don't buy then their disappointment are inevitable.

seriously, with so many fakes around one can't be too sure if you're wearing the real stuff or not.
Hence for people to be impressed by your presence it has to be much more than what watch you're wearing. Moreover don't expect the layman to even know the watch that you're wearing cost thousands.
I think a thick gold chain round your neck would do a better job :Laughing_on_floor:

yes, and a minimum of 2 big gold rings on fingers.
but if one wants to make sure that their watch speaks loud and clear - there is no better watch than a gold coloured loleks

Sometimes it's very hard to tell the actual reaction from the service providers by guessing. We got to really conduct the real test only to find out the truth.

Actually, it would be fun if we can have more tests like that. :D

Bro, thank you for your time to test.
However, with no offence, your test method is wrong and doesn't conclude any point.
Why?
Yourself wearing two different watches and expect different results?
Is like you walk in to BMW showroom wearing a full dinner suit wearing a Rolex, I'm sure they treat you well. Then the next day go back to same BMW showroom wearing shorts and wearing Seiko, what do you expect from them? They remember who you are.
You are supposed to get another friend to test with you. One wearing Rolex and other wearing Seiko, same shop same waiter, salesman, salesgirls. Then the results might be different.

Just chipping in my 2 sen. I think that generally, the watch that we wear does influence others' treatment towards us, but only in limited circumstances only. I travel regularly for work duties, and it was all too common that the rest of the biz class passengers would be sporting Rollies on their wrists- the most common being the DJ and Sub. The stewardess tend to treat us in a similar manner with smiles and a twinkle in their eyes, never mind the fact that I sometimes wear affordable throw-about Japanese watches. In fact, given my friendly nature, they have even given preferential services to me (let's not elaborate further there) disregarding the watch that I may be wearing then.
Having said that, I did notice that other fellow passengers tend to open up more during the times when I was sporting a Rollie. Tried with other Swiss brands (Omega, B&R, etc) but Rollie seemed to be the preferred currency to open up doors with strangers mid-flight, and I have made many good networking along the way. Businessmen especially, may see that a fellow Rollie-wearing person to be a pragmatic, reliable, and down-to-earth type of person- someone whom they could internalise with. And it's all thanks to Rollie's marketing efforts. If they had engaged pop personnel like Kim Kardashian or Marilyn Manson as their brand ambassadors, then it'd likely be the opposite ball game altogether.
The above would not hold true for WIS though. There was an occasion that I had on SevenFriday (it was not readily available in Malaysia back then, and certainly not replicated like mushroom after a rain, as per today) and another passenger in another seat sporting a Pam, specially requested for my permission to sit next to me to have a look at my watch. And from the conversations that follow suit, we met up to talk about watches whenever we travel to each others' country; and we helped each other to get more contacts in the industry.
In hotels, restaurants, etc, I found that the service personnel may glance at your watch to get a general feel of whom were they liaising with; as would they glance at your clothing, luggages, etc. At the end of the day, I have gotten many free upgrades to suites, etc but that was more attributed to having a friendly nature. Customers tend to treat service personnel as punching bags sometimes, and these front liners do appreciate some friendly conversation and cheeky banter at times. And they sometimes requisite by getting you better tables, better rooms, etc at no additional charges.
The watch that we wear was but an extension of ourselves. When I wear my Rangeman, I normally feel more adventurous. When I wear my Stop2Go, I may feel a bit cheekier and relaxed. When I wear my Sub, I simply want to blend in with the crowd. When I wear my SD4k, I feel just that bit better and more confident in my negotiations, especially when my counterpart was wearing a Sub. Silly, I know, but if works, it works.
If you really want that special treatment in Malaysia, luxury watches still get seconded by titles.

i get weird stares, dead silence, and/or general response as if i am a sexual predator whenever i tried to be friendly and chatty with that sweet-looking waitress/front desk/salesgirl.
i guess it is not just your watch, clothing or how you carry yourself. perhaps you have that "tom cruise" look too. i dont. i have faceproblem. :Laughing_on_floor:

LOL, I don't qualify for the "Tom Cruise" look. I wished I looked as good-looking as him, but no. Just an average man-on-the-street Uncle look. I still think that a friendly nature opens doors, more so than wearing a luxury watch.
Andrewhtf, you are probably still a young chap in your mid-to-late-twenties or early-thirties. That's why the ladies would think that it's your testosterone talking. Don't worry, it gets better as you aged- it always does for us men in general. When we were younger, we chase after 'em young birds. When we get older and wiser, the situation reverses. Just make sure that you are in a position to respond to those advances, if you choose to then. Me? I have a ring on my finger and adorable kids in the background; so I know my limits.

It depends on what door you want to open
