Just wanted to share my current thoughts and feelings about the hobby.
After many years of collecting watches, I suddenly felt 'tired'. I no longer visit my favorite online merchants' websites as well as famous watch review websites as often as before. Even my grail watch list does not excite me anymore.
Anyone facing this/faced this before? :-\

I'm going thru it now only after half a year. I've got most of my grail pieces

My first encounter of this feeling was 20 years ago. I had read many good watches magazine and visit some watch shops but too bad my pocket was not deep and there were too many Grail watches. I felt tired and fire put off. I just kept the tiny spark deep into my heart.
But I learns to live with my current watches day in and day out. Putting on them for different activities and function. I even got some scratches on their case and glass. Taking them to different countries and meeting different people.
Sometimes I staring at strangers nice pieces to enjoy on train/flight/MRT, sometimes the strangers look at my watches too, there were even times I staring at air stewardress Rolex till she smiled back to me.
There will be times I feel tired about my watches but by looking at my watches, they help bringing back my sweet old memories on those things that I have done and been through.
And I am not lacking of real stories to tell my children.
Like the lately Tanjung Piai trip, I was acting weird and did silly things by laying down my whole body onto the bridge and trying to reach out to get the seasnails for my kids (my kids are so excited and jumping like monkey). My MM300 bracelet is totally ruined with scratches as it was rubbing against the coarse cement. But then again, we are happy! Those scratches on my MM300? Priceless! :laugh:

after months of regular visits of MWF, online merchants, foreign blogs, magazines, and daily doses of wrist shots by
fellow MWF members , etc especially by Bro.. Meor Amri..have actually expedited the process :-\ :-\ ;D

Six years since I started on this journey and I have finally felt this 'lethargy' that Bro Meor is speaking of. There is nothing much in the market now that is genuinely exciting me anymore. Even the Rolex Daytona 116500LN which was supposed to be my "must-have watch" does not seem that appealing to me anymore. I do still look forward to the new releases from SIHH and Baselworld every year but I do not feel the need to have to own those pieces anymore.
Having said that, I have instructed my regular dealer to source for one last piece as my true last hurrah. That or we shall see how things are after SIHH 2017 and Baselworld 2017. :Laughing_on_floor:

The simple and basic doesn't appeal too. It is not about the ability of buying or affordability but more of the 'calling'/desirability.

I have experienced this type of "lethargy" that you mentioned, bro Meor. Some years back, there was a feeling of "been-there-done-that" with my watch collection (although mine was but a pebble compared to your mountain of a collection accumulated over the years), so I hit the "reset" button and cleared the collection sans a few pieces that I really liked. Thereafter, I tried to keep the collection to a manageable 7-10 pieces; so I would clear off a piece or two when I added in another new piece. I found that the self-imposed quantity control ensured that the pieces in the winders rightfully earned their wrist times and stories over time, all pun intended. Sometimes, I would buy a piece for its review in my blog, and would flip it immediately thereafter- so my blog was like a transit visitation for such watches.
This lethargic feeling would eventually be cured when a unique piece hits the market, no worries; but in the meantime, if you refrain from adding new pieces that don't truly speak to you, it'd help not to aggravate that adverse feeling.
Another half-way house remedy that had helped me, was to not procure the grail piece that I had in mind. I looked at it from time to time, but I refrain myself from getting it for real. This way, I kind of tell myself that I am still travelling in the journey towards that grail that I had in mind, and that I would stay contented when I have added that piece into my winder. Until that time, I would continue sampling other watches, but the quantity imposition remains. Just my 2 sen.

Meor,
Habislah...I think a few dealers in the Klang Valley will have to close shop once you stop buying.

@D'Andy & @Cwlwatch,
I think both of you may have identified a potential root cause to my lethargy....to many watches in the collection....last count I have >100.
I guess it is time to start culling......
@Enkidu,
The ADs I go to have already started to cry :(

That would work, really. And if it's brick and mortar, I could work as your storekeeper and security guard, with my only pay being given the permission to appreciate your many watches.

Hi @meoramri bro.
I am not sure whether you like vintage watch or not. But if you do, then the patiently hunting and fishing the vintage piece can be fun. :thumbsup:
Hope you recover from this watch desirability emptiness soon.

Start selling the ones' you don't have any feel anymore . Until all are nearly gone then the buying will start again and this time
U will be wiser on your pick. It's just another phase of consolidation.
I've done that before.
Regards

Think I can relate to how bro Meor is feeling. Like most of us, we love watches just because we do. No other way of explaining it. For others, a watch is akin to a car, somewhat of a "status" symbol to show to the world that you have "arrived".
Being in my 40's and in a position to have a little extra cash to splurge after the house, kids, education and retirement funds are taken care of...I naturally look for things to occupy my time. Things that I like. And watches are one of them. No particular make or brand that is preferred, but just a general appreciation of what a beautiful timepiece is. Naturally when one was younger and budgets are somewhat constrained, we are limited to what we can procure. Although I can't say that I can afford watches that run into seven figures. However most of the watches that I once considered my grail are easily attainable these days. But time and taste has changed and so has ones outlook and priorities.
Like was mentioned, even the new Daytona ceramic doesn't seem to tickle my fancy. I went out to local ADs to try out my Grail watches and got a somewhat muted feeling. That spark just isn't there anymore. I still love and appreciate watches and this will never go away. But the urge to go buy more is no longer there. Maybe the watches in the market is not as "attractive" to my soul anymore? Can't seem to find the right words to describe how I feel, but I love watches , but not enough to buy...maybe I am less impulsive thes days.
Anyhow, I still have a deep respect for people who love fine timepieces and the craft and dedication into building one.

I tried to go after pre-loved watches a few times (got 4 in the collection) but the thrill in the capture is different than getting a brand new piece....I still prefer 'virgins'

The appreciation for horology is still there. Only the passion seems to diminish......emmm.....I wonder if there is a watch collectors' version of viagra to kick start everything ?!?
