Title: Tag Heuer Caliber 1887
Post by: danny on October 21, 2010, 12:58:33 PM
Hi Guys,
The first units of the Caliber 1887 reached our shores not too long ago and most of the ADs already have these in stock.
I got to see one of these recently at a local AD and I must say I came away pretty impressed.

I have never owned a Tag before because I did not really see Tag as a true watch manufacturer but more of a branding company, however this model has changed my perception of the brand, for the better.

The watch is generally well made and I think the final version of the watch, without the Tachymeter is an improvement over the prototype design unveiled at Basel this year. I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the chronograph. Even though the new calibre is not equipped with a vertical clutch mechanism (It comes with an oscillating pinion designed to start the chronograph within 2/1000th of a second.) it did not seem to exhibit the notorious "jump" of the sweeping seconds hand when the chronograph is activated.

The new model is also priced competitively, especially if you compare with the current crop of Carrera chronos with the Valjoux 7750 caliber and you buy into Tag's claim that this is an in-house chronograph caliber.

With the appropriate discount the new Tag is even competitive with the Seiko Brightz chronographs with the 6S37 calibers as these JDM models have been adversely affected by the strong yen.

Personally if I were to buy myself a Tag, then this would be it. Just my 2 cents.

What do you guys think?

Take note of the blued column wheel. Nice.

Seiko's magic lever reborn as Tag's H.E.R. High Efficiency Rewinder technology.

RM12,000 for the bracelet version and RM11750 for the strap version.

;D No matter how Tag try to slice it and dice it, they cannot remove the Seiko DNA from this caliber. But the magic lever is a very robust and well proven system, so no worries about its reliability whether it's working in a Seiko or the new Tag.

Do you mean the Seikos are at a similar pricing level?

If you check with the usual Japanese Internet retailers you can see that the Seiko Brightz Phoenix chronographs with the 6S37 caliber is priced at a similar level to the Tag Heuer Carrera Caliber 1887 (after appropriate discount). However the Seikos come with a nice power reserve indicator.
