Title: Certina - General Discussion
Post by: ikttan on October 30, 2015, 09:33:01 AM
As we all know, the brand Certina is rather low-key in that it doesn't get much publicity internationally (because it is not in many countries).  However, what are the shifoo-shifoo's opinion here locally?  Where does it sit in the Swatch group hierarchy?  It is the only other brand that uses the Tissot/ETA derived Powermatic 80, why is that?  And since it is rather "unknown", are there any good discounts around town  ;D

Just want to know the opinions ... thank you in advance for sharing

In my own opinion, Certina rank just above Tissot. Upper Certina is Mido and Hamilton. I've own Certina DS Action and DS Podium. I like most of Certina design. It use similar movement in Tissot but their case finishing and material feel more solid. Price is also higher than Tissot. Discount are pretty standard for Swatch Group brand  ;D

I had the same thought too. Furthermore they save a lot in advertising cost, thus their watches are better value for money.

This is a useful "guide" ... Swatch < Tissot < Certina < Mido < Hamilton < Longines < Rado < Omega < GO < Blaincpain < Breguet ??? Is this roughly the pecking order? Below Omega, I get confused on the "order" of Swatch hierarchy.

But they spend less in advertising compared to most brands which advertise regularly, sponsored international sports events as well as signing up countless celebrities and athletes as brand ambassadors, in the end this cost will be added into their selling price  :-\

Yes, it is hard to see Certina advertising. Can see them in F1 and WRC, but they quite popular in Europe. Some brand selling "name" and some selling high quality watches and better value for money even it is not famous :).

money can be spent into

design
finishing
or
marketing

but history proven
marketing sells

rolex spent the most in AD
patek spent in auction center

I recall handling the certain ds diver in stainless steel (didn't like the titanium, felt cheap) and was not only solidly built, but was all around an awesome watch for the price. I couldn't believe the build quality for a Swiss watch at this pricing (was about rm2000). Was extremely well made in this category for a diver. I think generally their models lack innovation and they spend like almost next to nothing in advertising (vs major brands) and aren't particularly popular like Hamilton for example due to their watches being in like movies and military heritage. But hey, guess that's why it's cheaper and still well made.

This is my Certina DS First automatic with WR 200m. Its original leather was finally replaced with a SS bracelet by me today.

I will conduct some water tests on it. It has not gone any water tests before due to its leather strap for the last 3 years.
