Title: Does chrono really matters in a watch ?
Post by: mkkong on September 25, 2015, 11:11:02 PM
Hi all,
I have been wondering for the longest time, does having a chrono function important in a watch ? Do we really use it ? Reason for saying this is that the chrono watches are so much expensive as compared to non-chrono.  Example : AP Royal Oak Offshore Diver are much more cheaper than Offshore.

Is it worth paying extra (much more) for having the chrono function ?

The chrono function is also hardly useful to me, unless i wanna time my runs or dive. But then again, under such circumstances i would rather use a digital watch or a proper dive watch. Or i could use the chrono to time my half boiled eggs.  ;D

On a more serious note, i personally would not look for a mechanical chrono watch. Firstly, due to under usage for me. Secondly, the selling price will also be higher. Thirdly, the service costs will definitely be much higher too. And if i want a more complicated looking watch, i'd go for small seconds/PR indicator/moon phase/calender functions.

My first Swiss watch was a chrono. Flipped it as I deemed it too busy after some time. Thereafter have been mainly staying with clean diver dials except for the Speedy. Usage of the chrono? Hardly, during my ownership of such watches.

Chrono does not really matter to me. I think just keep 1 or 2 good ones. Will focus on 3 hands.

Seriously for me the chrono is something to make the watch a bit more complicated. Is a Yes or No answer because depend on my mood when to wear a chrono watch .

And I am can guarantee most of the watch owner not really using it at all.

For me, I often use chronograph when I'm driving to measure time, or just use the tachymeter to measure driving speed  ;D. Sometime I choose the chronograph version watch because of their size. I like the watches with > 42mm diameter.

Only use the chrono for the looks initially. Never actually use it for practical purposes. While I think most chrono looks too Bz,  the speedy chrono looks well laid out and symmetrical. Wish to have one some day :-P

I never used the chrono function, but still addicted to chronograph watches despite already owned 3 pcs.
Probably because of its size, its thickness and its sophisticated appearance that grab my attention.
I wish to get a GMT, but i guess i will still go for chrono again whenever my hands get itchy ;D

Chrono takes up real estate on the dial

If u prefer a more complicated dial, then chrono is nice

Perpetual calendar also takes up some space but that is another story...

In all honesty, majority will not use the chrono function.

Some like the busy look and some like the added complication. I have the speedy and a millie miglia because I love the way they look and feel on my hand. And you definitely need one for a collection.

it really depends on the owner and his everyday situation i guess. I own an iwc port chrono and i am a student the chrono is extremely useful to me whenever i want to take a short break or time my route to uni etc.

I always loved the chronograph. In-house chronographs are expensive and time consuming to build, which is why a lot of company's tend to just use the Valjoux 7750 movement and forgo building their own chrono movements. So if you can find a watch that has an in-house chrono, well worth it to me!

Obviously, movements are important from my pov. Some people couldnt care less. But if that's the case, why buy expensive watches? Might as well go for a cheap brand that creates nice cases but sticks in ETA movements...

Not really? Depends on personality i think .As the chrono watches movement is much more complicated so its more expensive than non chrono watches .Most of them knew that chrono watch wasn't really so useful for them but they were still willing to buy it .Most important ,rather spend more money to buy things you really love it instead of regreting after buying.
