Title: Removing of engraving on backcase
Post by: ikttan on July 25, 2015, 03:41:48 PM
Is there a service to evaluate whether an engraving (name of person - not "President of the United States") on a backcase can be removed (by polishing or other means). And also provide a quote for it?  It's a 1970s Rolex.  Thanks.

Y need to remove the engraving? By using polishing tools cant do much if the engraving is too deep...

Because I am interested in the watch but it has engraving on the backcase.  Need to find a place where a quote can be given if it can be removed or inform me if it can't as it is too deep.

The best bet maybe you can pay a visit to MWF shop and get a second opinion.  ;)

Personally, i would refrain from excessive polishing to remove the name....not worth it

Depending on how deep the engraving it, might take much too much effort and brings up some risk to an older piece. Perhaps you can source for a caseback replacement instead?

My preferred method is to solder fill the engravings on the back first.

Then grinding it level, finished by polishing to original standards.

Suggest you just get an original replacement case back. Keep the original. If you decide to sell, old case back (+new as well) will be be part of the package. Maintain the vintage value.

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I think I will find time to bring it to Bobo to have a look at it.

Getting a used case back was an option as well.  Maybe just keep the original and then get one of those after market with the see though case back for fun of it :P
