If you had to choose which luxury brand would you pick as your first watch and why?In terms of finishing, aethestics, prestigious and feel on the wrist....It can be any brand you desire, may it be people's all time favourite Rolex & Omega or watch aficionado's choice like IWC ~
-
As a first timer, I would choose a well known brand. I will go with Panerai, Omega, IWC, B&R or Tag Huer. Knowing better now I will go for Omega, Seiko, Rolex or IWC.
-
Seiko?u mention panerai earlier, why changed,is there any particular reason?what about Audemars or JLC?
-
Well it all depends on your budget but you will never go wrong with a rolex.
-
Panerai looks awfully similar to me. Having one is enough for me with limited spending budget. I believe many disagree with me on Pam. :) I find AP and JLC bit like princesses, need to baby them. not to mention, they are twice or triple the price of Rolex which beyond my spending budget.
-
My first one is IWC. I know many sifus here will go for Rolex, JLC, PAM or Omega because of the movement or the resell value.
I got IWC for the first one because it is my dream to really owned one. Not about movement not about price... sometimes is all about how you feel when you have it. That is priceless... Seriously every time I look at my IWC I feel great!!

try hit rolex, pam or iwc etc. as daily beater as applicable to most occasions
-
When i had lower budget Tag and Omega was great.
When I went next stage I went for Panerai. I like the simple, uncluttered and clean dial vs the rest of the watch brands around. I also like the feature which we can change the straps easily which was not available in my past watches. the watch feels news everytime I change a different strap so a cheap way to not have many watches to get this same feeling.
On my next stage, I am looking at historical heritage and finishing features like AP, JLC, VC, Hublot but at the moment I still find their design very messy and cluttered. Somehow I prefer clean and simple dials. Biggest problem of course is budget. If I could afford I would probably buy them for another variety cause the finishing on this watches are great too.
-
hi , the best watch to own is the one our wallet could afford. Hi Chan long time no hear? regards
-
If the watch is expensive, I want it cannot be scratched, which is full ceramic.
among those high end brand, only Panerai and Hublot have full ceramic model, which will be my next target.
Hopefully Omega dark side of the moon will out a ceramic bracelet version.
-
I think the omega moon watch is a good start. Be it second hand or new, it has a story to tell about their ancestor that went up to moon and the lemania is a good movement. I believe a lot of collectors will definetely own one in their lifetime. But i am not sure the lemania movement is still available new nowadays. happy hunting !

Step 1: collect all the pictures of the watches you like
Step 2: erase all the brand names on those watches
Step 3: have a second look at those watches and make your decision....

Im just a newbie here, and still work hard to get my wish list, step by step i will go to...
Below RM5,000 : Baume Mercier (Done),
Below RM10,000 : Tissot (Done), Tudor , B&R
Below RM20,000 : Omega
Above RM20,000 : Penerai
-
Talk about first choice, is must be ROLEX!!
or keep saving..... ;D
-
Hi Tony! Haven't heard from you in ages! ROO still going strong ;D
-
I think a reasonable valued watch should be the first choice... normally it takes you awhile before you actually realise what kind of watches you actually want to buy... so no point in spending big money only to buy something wrong... I would go for a tag, or any other Swiss brand at the lower end of the market.... then work my way up... that's just my two cents...
-
My first choice is a Patek
But I ended up a Casio

That is the most brilliant answer i've came across so far...

My first choice is a Patek

Imagine if its vice versa lol..
-
Rolex for sure.
Omega nowaday priced similar to Rolex but resale bit low
-
A second hand Rolex will never go wrong..
-
If money was not an issue, Patek Philippe. But if i had to work for the money, then it will be Rolex
-
Seems like most will go for Rolex....but which model of Rolex worth buying?
-
If pre-owned the Explorers 1 and 2 are good entry points. If new obviously the choices are more: Sub, GMT2 etc.

IWC... still far away from me.....
-
You can try to have a look at Nomos glashutte. They're just small watch manufacturer from Germany that produce in-house movement watch. Their design is simple and more to dress watch. Unfortunately they dont have any AD in Malaysia, so you can order through their website. Try have a look
-
I went with a Zenith when I first started off. Discounts are still good for Zeniths
-
Rolex thn patek...

This is an excellent choice. Quality, heritage, prestige, and indicated class and horological education, knowledge, and savvy on the behalf of the buyer. Another good but slightly more predictable choice would be JLC.
-
I recommend second hand Rolex submariner. Won't go wrong there as long as you pay the right price.

Luxury is relative...but for me, luxury was a Tag when I started off working( 1995). I bought a 4000 series when I got my first year bonus. I was so very happy and proud of the watch. Please understand that I come from your typical average Malaysian family living in a terrace house and having parents that drive a Proton.
Along the lines, I fell in love in an IWC (2002) and got myself the 3706 after many many years of owning my one and only Tag. I bought it purely because I love the looks of the watch.
Then itchy backside me was walking around one fine day and chanced upon the Ball Engineer Master II diver GMT (2008), black dial and gold indices. The price was reasonable and I just couldn't help myself but to purchase it.
So far...I only bought watches on the average of one piece every six years. Which I thought was not too bad.
Got married not too long after and my firstborn joined us in 2011 and finally bought my very first Rolex. It was the Milgauss GV that caught my eye. Long story as to why I came to that decision, and that will be a story for another day.
2014, for my 40th birthday I got myself the GS SBGR 083 (Sold off the IWC to help fund this) as it really caught my eye and being limited to only 700 pieces worldwide, it was a real bargain for the price.
2015, while on a working trip to Frankfurt, Germany...I chanced upon the Nomos Orion 380 while walking around town. Price was also reasonable and my credit card came out faster than Wyatt Earp can draw his six shooter.
Thank you for bearing with me so far and that is my timeline for watch purchases to date.
That said...if I knew then, what I know now...if one can afford it...I would go Rolex first. The price, built quality, heritage is really bang for buck if you really think about it.
Most of the forum has already suggested that you go down that path, and so would I. Good luck and happy hunting...

really appreciate your timeline story :)
-
Also check out Cartier and Chopard.
-
1st nice watch bought was a Pam
-
Hmmmm..... as has been mentioned, luxury is relative to one's bank account size. For me the first mechanical watch I bought was a Tissot Seastar. And the first 'so-called' timepiece was an Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow (pre-loved , of coz). However, the one I would consider Luxury would be my Rollie Sub C. There has been other Rollie's, JLC, Pam's, Breitling, Ball that came and went. But I'm still holding on to the Sub C.
-
my criteria will be, dial > case > brand > movement > history/story
-
I started off with Tag Aquaracer and then rollie Sub C.
-
Rolex

Patek

My preference will be rolex steel sport model.
-
First choice, or to start off with? The term "luxury" is relative and by using that term, I assume you are asking on "street credibility" among your peers. My pick would be:-
(1) If most of your peers are not watch aficionados.
Rolex (DateJust Steel Models coz these are easily recognizable)
(2) If most of your peers do know a little about watches.
Patek (Calatrava coz I am still short of this one)
(3) If most of your peers are shifoos.
Doesn't matter what it is, just get what you like ;D (but preferably one with in-house movement). A swatch sistem51 also can :Startled:

Rolex for me. Got myself a two tone datejust when I had my first born son 9 years ago. A crown for every achievement indeed 8)
-
I still think Rolex is the evergreen luxury watch with versatility...that's my choice of my first luxury watch
-
My first expensive watch was a gift for a special occassion in Year 2003 and i could have anything that i wanted. Of course I wanted a rolex but being a gift I couldn't ask for so much so I asked for an Omega Seamaster Professional (after having seen Pierce Brosnan as James Bond). I still wear the Omega occassionally and I have bought 5 Rolexes since.
-
1) Rolex
2) Panerai
3) AP

Sub , gmt , ym , deep sea etc. those are more sporty and fetch good resale value and demand.

If you want to be safe I would go for a Rolex. A Rolex is a well balanced watch. In gaming terms I would say that Rolex has agility (movement), strength (case and material) and magic (brand name) that is strong in all categories.
Rolex, in my opinion:
Movement: 7
Case and Material: 8
Brand Name: 8.5
I prefer JLC because I believe JLC is:
Movement: 8.5
Case and Material: 6.75
Brand name: 7
It kind of depends on what you value in your watch. Movement to me is the most important feature - which is why I'll never buy a Tudor Black Bay = ebauche. Some people prefer the steel of Rolex because it could get banged up and still produce precise time (tool watch).
No matter the case, enjoy your watch :)

I was so admire looking at those wearing Longines watches since I was very young.... don't ask me why (Longines doesn't as popular as Tag & Omega during that time, but I never had another thought on another maker at all from that time until my pocket was ready for one). Gotten myself a pair of Longines as first luxury watches along with the "thinking" of it'll be my ONLY watch (ehm, ehm ) ....... but no more after 2-3 years, "my thinking" was obsoleted and I started to think about one after another... and move on ....... any of you had the same "thinking of the only luxury watch during your first luxury watch"?
-
F**k Rolexes. Breguet, all the way.
Class.
-
Depends what motivates u. Eg; the 5 matchsticks would be highly recognisable if that's what u r after.
Hublot & AP may appear loud but then I doubt many non-WIS really know much bout them so it's kinda safe if u wanna stay low profile.
-
Very great simple tips. Never thought of it before.
Step 1: collect all the pictures of the watches you like
Step 2: erase all the brand names on those watches
Step 3: have a second look at those watches and make your decision....

My first luxury watch--IWC...
Looking for my dream watch~~AP

You can't go wrong with any Submariner or GMT Master.
-
Submariner Hulk, GMT Batman and Daytona, IMHO.

If you are going to be flipping it or see yourself flipping it sometime in the future, better get one of the usual suspects - 116610LN, 116610LV, 116710LN, 116710BLNR. My first Rolex piece was a Datejust, then along the way I got the Submariner and Explorer 2. Submariners are very easy to flip, I dare say.
If I get to start the hobby all over again, I know that I would start off with 114610- that was a JB classic and I won't have to be troubled with changing the dates every now and then, and worrying about not changing the dates during the pantang-time. I find myself looking at this piece more and more over time, all pun intended
-
My first choices would be A. Lange & Sohne and Patek Philippe.
-
my rule of thumb - whatever your heart desires.
having said that rolex is a safe bet.

1st IWC , 2nd Rolex Sub , 3rd Rolex President ,4th Pam , 5th AP ROO limited edition

Rolexes are gonna drop in price together with the currency. Maybe a good time to buy a Rolex. You can haggle now.

U mean the official RSP will also be reduced? Is it also possible to haggle on popular model, eg. Submariner or gmt?

Quite unlikely to get for discounts for the highly demanded models such as Submariner, GMT Master and Daytona. There is usually a waiting list and so the ADs are not motivated to offer discounts.
-
Used ones will drop. Simple supply and demand. AD for new unlikely.... But they too might change their prices. If ppl buy outside Malaysia they won't be able to sell. Liquid markets don't have a chance for arbitrage
-
For me is Pam ...rolex...omega...the rest I didn't bother to think because I will know I never afford them.
-
For value wise, Rolex/Hublot/AP
For stylist, IWC/B&R/Panerai.
