Hi there
Just got a feedback from a friend who just came back from China trip. Apparently no check and its like the old days. Status quo
-
Another updates
A friend purchase something from overseas was forwarded a GST custom declaration earlier. The payment was passed to the DHL when delivered to her door step.
A few more tourist coming in from overseas, some being inspected some not.
But there is still no GST declaration form issued.
That is the latest update.
Any updates from you please contribute

The customs can't be checking everyone that enters into the country. Just like before, they relied on self declaration and selective enforcement.
-
Let's say I purchased online a watch worth RM 1,000, send thru DHL or Fedex or some other courier service.
What amount will custom charge ?
6% of RM 1,000 or whatever amount they feel like charging?
-
I think it should be similar to other gst enforcing countries, i.e. 6% of the declared price plus some handling fee imposed by the courier company

Wait till Customs takes a cue from Singapore and have officers with sharp eyes.
-
I will travelling next month will try to "smuggle in" . Taking chances afterall what has got to lose.
;D
-
If they caught you just says it's a gift from a friend. Make sure you hide the receipt somewhere. If it's just one piece, most likely they will just let you go. However, if you intend to smuggle many pieces with the intention to trade or make a profit then then it's a commercial nature and they will impose GST and compound for not declaring the item.
-
I order lots of stuff online. As long as the declared value is not more than rm500 your parcel won't get detained.

Too bad for $500 can't even buy a decent watch. If you under declare and anything goes wrong then Jiat lat liao.
-
Watch is duty free in Malaysia. But I think they will ask you to pay the 6% GST on top of the watch price.

I tried my first oversea purchase after GST.
Got a notice from Pos Malaysia.
Went all the way to LCCT (45 min drive from my house)
Reached there tight security. The custom department is sharing the same building with Pos Malaysia.
Have to run around ding dong among 4 counters.
Finally paid the GST based on the overseas invoice @6%. Apparently the custom has their own exchange rate which is based on a piece of rate stick on the table. :o
All the run around the counters completed within 45 min.
Driving back another 45 min.
All in all almost 3 hours.
No more the luxury of waiting at home for the parcel.
Have to retire from watch collection.

Wondering any issue if the shipper mentioned it as a gift?

That's just too much trouble. Did you have to wait a long time to be served? Was the customs counter crowded?
Instead of making the customer to travel all the way to LCCT, why can't they just collect cash from you when delivering the item? With the current practice, pos laju can save a lot of cost as they don't need to deliver direct to customer now. Just passing the cost to end user.
-
that's certainly very troublesome way to pay the gst.
i back from japan last week wearing a new gshock, luckily the custom never stop me for inspection. if they found the box and manual, i think they will charge the gst.
-
hailat already
-
At the custom they ordered me to open the box and ask "what watch is this?"
I told him another brand of non Rolex she didn't bother to look at it.
If your vendor is willing to state as "Gift" the custom I believe will ask some questions which you should get ready for the answer.

If I may, I would like to share my experience of purchasing online after GST from overseas....although its not a watch ;D no money.... :P
I recently ordered a Music CD from an online shop based in Europe, it was sent via EMS and was handled by Poslaju here, however, the Poslaju guy brought along the Kastam receipt and I paid the GST at my gate instead of having me going to the office.
The GST charged was based on the delclared value on the EMS slip and the exchange rate was prefixed by Kastam stated on the receipt.....
-
Thanks for your sharing Jeep
From the observation of your case and my case I tend to speculate that whether to go to the custom office will depend on the item whether it is huge, value etc.
Please share more of your experience out there
-
I think the brand of the watch does not matter when it comes to GST. It's the value of the item bought. However, does it mean that no GST if it's a gift from your a friend since there's no purchase or consumption? GST gurus please help.

You are welcome Yoda.
Yeah, what you said may be true, its based on the item's value. If I remember correctly, I paid around RM5+ only for GST. So maybe such small amounts can be collected by the Poslaju guy.
*For those who are calculating, yeah....the one CD costs almost RM 100 including shipping from Europe. :Blue: Very expensive, but what to do, cant find in Malaysia......

Hi guys, want to share with you my experience. I just bought a watch from Chino in Japan. It arrived in Malaysia on 12/5 and was held in customs. On 14/5, Pos Malaysia contacted me and asked if I wanted to appoint them as the customs clearing agent or go to sepang to do it myself. Since it was too far away, I decided to appoint them.
They then emailed me a form to tick my preference of appointing them and I sent it back via email. To be noted here that all correspondence with Pos after the initial phone call was via email. On 15/5 they emailed the amount to be charged by customs and asked me to tick my agreement to pay. I was away for the weekend and only managed to reply them on 18/5. Today, 20/5 they called me to tell me that my parcel had cleared customs and was on its way to the pos laju HQ in KL Sentral. 10 minutes later, a staff from the HQ called me to confirm that my parcel had arrived.
I took the lrt over and gave them my parcel number, paid the custom duty (gst), they only accept cash for this, and received my parcel.
They charge RM30 for agent fee and there is an RM18 charge by customs for the forms. Add RM2.88 gst for these charges and the total "other costs" is RM50.88 in addition to the gst on your watch.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the process (not the gst payment) as it was convenient, everything via email, and the pos laju HQ is accessible as it is in KL Sentral.
Sorry, forgot to mention that this was via EMS post, not FedEx or DHL.

Wow. How crappy it is. The misc cost actually more than the gst itself. Pos Malaysia get much more revenue.

That's normal.....the handling charges imposed are fixed cost while the gst is variable.....buy more expensive items then the misc cost would be lower..... It's a common practice in other Countries that implement the value added tax like EU countries and the UK....

At least you are happy with the service and save you all the hassle of dealing with custom clearance......

Ya, the charges are not too bad if your item is more than RM1k. At least it saves you the trouble of doing customs clearance yourself. Actually, even if you do it yourself, I think the toll and petrol to klia will cost as much or more than the RM30 agent fee. You still have to pay the RM18 charged by customs for the forms etc..
-
Yes. I sure know it looks more worthy when u buy higher price stuff. Just ranting on the extra cost on top of the gst.

Hi there
Just got back from overseas trip.
I noticed only big bags are asked to be screen at custom clearance KLIA.
Those bags on your shoulder are not asked to be screen.
So you know what I mean?
;D

My first Internet watch purchase after GST was...tax free. Package from Indonesia via EMS (hence Postlaju in KL). Customs didn't slap GST on it despite a value on the manifest of USD350

I've bought watch straps that were delivered to my doorstep with no GST, but had a low declared value.
A friend of mine bought some bike accessories; should not have been charged GST, but he was as customs decided to lump product price along with shipping fees (which brought it to just a smidgen over RM500 iirc). He had to waste another 2 hours trying to reason with the guy behind the counter that he shouldn't be charged any fees or GST; this was at the Pos Malaysia office next to LCCT.
At the end of the day, he did manage to convince the people there. It seems that this GST mumbo jumbo is at their own discretion.
If I am paying for postal charges, I expect it to be delivered to my freaking doorstep. At no point do I expect to either travel all the way to LCCT to pay the fees and pick up the item manually, nor do I expect to pay an agent freaking fee to have them handle my package and then for me to manually pick it up from their HQ in KL Sentral area. For me, that is BS- delivering to my doorstep is their bloody job!! That, and then they need to standardize this rubbish GST fee structure, and make it public knowledge.
-
well said mate !!!!!!!
totally agree with you
-
DHL guy told me after GST, all packages will be opened and inspected by customs one by one. If declared value is suspicious, customs may charge more GST based on their own guesstimate. Before GST, customs only inspect a few randomly selected packages. Dunno if he's speaking the truth or not.
-
This GST is crap.
I had some free items shipped in to me by NOMOS.
FREE items... but yet i was called up by FEDex and told me that I'll be charged GST for them. I said, the items are declared a value for insurance purposes but if you look at the invoice, it is zero in value. Plus I did not purchase the items.
The girl says, sorry the customs officer will just charge. They will charge NOMOS.
Seriously, what the f@#$ is wrong with these people?
-
Urgh. I don't understand why GST would apply on second hand items. If the watch was sold before and now it's being sold again, that would count as a double taxation. Stupid.

agreed
but if they wanted to charge
shd just charge on the added value sell by gst registered shop

My item just arrived at KLIA customs. Let's see how this goes....

Malaysia was once the cheapest country to buy a Rolex but not any more. The next cheapest country is Hong Kong but exposure of counterfeit parts will be higher in Hong Kong. Just sharing :)
